    1. Re: [GLA] John Lewis / Ruth Winter
    2. Hello Dave Regarding the death info on Ruth, this "may" be it.... Ruth LEWIS, age 68, 4th Quarter of 1891, 11-A-471, Merthyr Tydfil. I found her and John in 1861, 71, 81 and 91. In 1891 they are with 2 of their sons, William and Thomas. I have been researching my family tree with the aid of my 92 year old grandfather for the last three years. My GGGgrandfather was called John Lewis, a baller born around 1820. On 16th Nov 1846 he married Ruth Winter at Merthyr Tydfil Parish Church. I am descended from one of his sons, my GGgrandfather James Lewis who moved to Llanelli. I am a bit stuck in a number of areas : 1) John Lewis - death date : can't find a thing. Neither can I for Ruth, his wife. He was an iron baller on the 1861 census, living in Pentrebach. 2) John's father - my GGGGgrandfather was called William born c 1789? He was a gamekeeper (from John's marriage certificate). Can I find records of this sort anywhere? Online I found "The Cambrian" from 1807 mentions a William Lewis, "Gamekeeper to Robert Jenner, Esq. for the several Manors of Wenvoe-castle, Moyle, Wrinstone, Cadoxstone juxta Barry, and Dynaspowis" but I am not sure if this is one and the same. Why would he have moved to Merthyr? Isn't that too far away from Wenvoe? Has anyone come across a record that could help? 3) Ruth's father was James Winter - I have found quite a lot on him, born 1792ish in Aberdulais, iron baller as occupation - has anyone come across more Winters who could be his parents? 4) My grandfather tells me that James, my GGgrandfather who was born around 1852 was the 'black sheep' of the family and something caused him to have to leave Merthyr. He married a girl called Catherine Morris on 6th Dec 1873 at St John's Church in Merthyr. Again, I wondered if any distant relation might have an idea of this! My grandfather never found out, but knew he had relatives near Merthyr still. Apologies for the long post, any ideas of where I should look next would be very much appreciated!
