I don't go there too often, but I found my ggg grandfather's will on there, by accident, and it was so interested to read (after translating the old hand-writing) what household goods he left his children. The military records are awesome. I even found my own Merchant Navy discharge book on there. Hi Gareth, My tuppenceworth is that the records on the National Archives website have most definitely helped me to find out certain things about my family members, and filled in gaps I wouldn't have otherwise known about. It's really helped to put flesh on the bones as we say. It could also be said that the big online companies aren't interested in us, only in what they want and in their own pockets, but we still benefit from what they have made available online, and we dig in to their resources regularly.
