    1. [GLA] Researching Rees POWELL
    2. Charlene via
    3. Hi all, I am new to this list and new to researching in Wales. I am tracing a Rees POWELL born about 1831 in South Wales. I find him in the 1885 Kansas Census in Osborne County and in the 1880 US census living in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, with his brother William born about 1832 who is married to Anna and has a child Alice. I have found no other records of Rees in the US census, but William is listed in the 1900 census in Westmorland County as widowed with Alice living with him. I believe I locate Rees and William in the 1841 Wales census as children of Edward and Mary POWELL living in Margam Parish. Edward is a farmer and the children listed are Edward 14, Elizabeth 12, Rees 10, William 9, David 7, Jennis 5, Alice 3, Ann 1. In the 1851 census, the older children are found in St. Brides Parish with Edward listed as farmer of the acres and Elizabeth, Rees, David, and Janet. I seem to lose track of Rees at this time but find William in 1871 listed with his father Edward in! St. Brides Major. I also find William in the 1911 Wales census living in St. Brides Major with his daughter Alice who was born in Pennsylvania, USA. Is anyone familiar with this family or doing research on this POWELL family? Charlene Sent from my iPad

    3. I used the search facility to look up my favourite parishes in Carmarthenshire, and was surprised to find that some weren't there. The map showed the hamlets which made up the parish but did not reference the parish name. So instead of Llangadog it shows Above Sawdde, Dyffryn Ceidrich and Quarter bach. The next parish, Llanddeusant, has been labelled as Llanfihangel Brynpabuan, which Genuki tells me is in Breconshire, near Builth. Similarly in Glamorgan the parish of Eglwysilan is not shown, only the hamlets which comprise it, one of which is helpfully labelled "unknown". This would seem to be a work in progress, so take care! 3.  Hi LauraThis might be yours:Morgan JONES married Mary WILLIAMS by banns at Merthyr Tydfil parish church 12 November 1832 signed by mark, witnessed by Thomas WILLIAMS and Daniel LEWIS (probably churchwarden he witnessed a number of marriages). Assuming Thomas is Mary's father (always possible another relative) on FreeReg: Baptised Mary WILLIAMS 29 August 1814 at Ystrodyfodwy to Thomas WILLIAMS  a labourer and Mary of Maindy Isaf. There are several Morgan JONES baptisms, two north of Swansea, one near Cardiff and one near Bridgend.Hope this helpsCheersLuned in Blaenavon Message: 2 Date: Sun, 10 May 2015 11:25:43 -0400 From: LAURA CONNORS <lauconn@msn.com> Subject: [GLA] Morgan JONES & Mary WILLIAMS, Merthyr Tydfil To: "glamorgan@rootsweb.com" <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <BLU178-W4310C2A52C1D1F244B0CA2B1DC0@phx.gbl> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi all- I'm researching my 4th great-grandparents, Morgan Jones (born between 1804-1810) and Mary Williams (born between 1811-1815. She died 9 Oct 1875 in Pennsylvania). They married in Merthyr Tydfil in November 1832, according to a copy of a marriage registration that was filed with a US Civil War pension application. They immigrated to the US in the early 1840s with their young son, Gomer Jones, who was born 1840-1841. (Their next recorded child was born in Pennsylvania in 1846). I'm interested in finding out who their parents were, and narrowing down their birthdate. It also seems likely to me that they may have had additional children between 1832 and 1840 who died before they left Wales. Any information, or recommendations for where to find additional info is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Laura Connors lauconn@msn.com

    3. I wonder if anyone can help? I cannot find the marriage of John Peregrine to an Ann in Pembrokeshire approx. 1818. They were natives of the parjshes of Llanycefn and Llandysilio. However they had family connections in Aberdare and Dowlais. Their son David Peregrine was employed as a mason at Aberdare in mid 19th century building houses for the colliers. I believe he lived at Trecynon end of Aberdare He had a sister Lettice Peregrine who lived at Dowlais. Is there any record of their parent' marriage at Aberdare therefore. i.e. John and Anne Peregrine around 1818. All Pembrokeshire searches have proved fruitless. All their children including David and Lettice above, were born in Pembs at Llandysilo. many thanks Yvonne Evans

    3. Friends, My belated thanks to the many who responded to my request, especially to the researcher (who I am not going to name) who gave me identifying data about my 2nd cousins. (I did thank him at the time). I have now been in touch with 2 of my 2nd cousins from Glamorganshire (1 of whom I have only come to know about  from the other) and now have a fair bit of information towards breaking down my wall. By the way, I was a generation out about the migration to OZ, naturally it was because of the Ballarat Gold Rush! Once again, many thanks to all who replied. Dave Ryman in Wildest Tasmania

    1. [GLA] Useful map web site
    2. Jeff Coleman via
    3. It is not often that I find a useful family history site that I have never seen before, but today when answering a query about a place in the London area that used to be in Surrey I came across one which seems likely to be useful to researchers in many parts of England and Wales On the GENUKI Surrey page there is a useful link to a Familysearch facility called 'English Jurisdictions in 1851' at http://maps.familysearch.org/#?centerLat=51.461836?centerLng=-0.138695?zoom=13 If you put in the name of a parish it will give you possible options and then link to a map showing parish boundaries (as on the 'Kain and Oliver' maps linked from GENUKI parish pages in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire) . A box with the tab 'jurisdictions' shows you the registration district and diocese this parish was in. If you use the 'Show Street Map' tab you can see what modern places are within the old boundaries. If you use the 'Satellite' tab you can see the nature of the landscape and degree of urbanisation nowadays. Sadly, for Glamorgan and Monmouthshire the data seems to be very sketchy or nonexistent, but the parish boundaries are there. If you are hunting ancestors in much of England this may be useful to see where the places were that they came from, and what parishes were nearby. Try it. Jeff

    1. Re: [GLA] researching name WILLIAMS
    2. Jeff Coleman via
    3. Llanhiddel/Llaniddel is another name for Llanhilleth . see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MON/Llanhiddel/ If this is your family, David seems to have been from Llanfair-ar-y-bryn http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Llanfair-ar-y-Bryn/ Note that a number of records from the established church in this parish are available on FreeReg http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/cmn.htm They might also be on Findmypast.co.uk Mary would have been from Llangadog http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Llangadock/ which included Brynamman, which in the 1840s was showing the beginnings of industrialisation, but not nearly as much as Merthyr. If Jane married in Llanhilleth/Llanhiddel in 1866 it may be worth looking for the rest of her family in the Gwent valleys as well as in Merthyr in the 1861 census. There is a Jane Williams age 13 born Merthyr Tydfil in 1861 as a Boarder in Cefn (Cefn-Coed-y-Cymmer), Vaynor parish but effectively part of Merthyr Tydfil, in the household of David Wallters, 40, b Llandybie, Carmarthenshire and his wife Margaret, 34, b Llanfair-ar-y-bryn, Carmarthenshire. I wonder whether Margaret might have been a relative, if this is the right person. Jane was a 'scholar' so was still at school rather than having been sent out to work, fairly unusual at age 13 in 1861. Clearly the marriage certificate from 1843 will show the names and occupations of Mary's and David's parents. They might turn up in baptism records, but as they married in a Baptist chapel it is quite likely that they would not have been baptised as infants. Which Carmel was it - in Troedyrhiw or Cefn-Coed-y-Cymmer? One further comment. DAVIS is a very unusual spelling in South Wales in the 1840s. It is almost always DAVIES, and some families appear as DAVID in some censuses and DAVIES in others.
