    3. Hello everyone, can anyone supply me with a copy of the cemetery plot notice for Trealaw cemetery? If not, please tell me where to apply for one. With my cousin I am hoping to visit the Trealaw area and hopefully pay our respects at the cemetery. I know the plot numbers, but not the whereabouts of each plot. Many thanks, cheerio Irene

    3. Hello, I'm looking for a John EVANS in the Merthyr / Aberdare area - I know ; ) My G Grandfather John Evans was born in Vaynor in 1875, he married Gwen (also nee EVANS). I have them in 1901 at 92, Twynyrhodyn Rd and again in 1911 in Mount Street Aberdare, with their children, Eloner, Ceinwen, Emlyn and Randall. I'm having trouble finding John before he was married though, I know his father's name was Thomas EVANS but there seems to be a couple of EVANS families in Vaynor with father Thomas and son John. I'm hoping I can find them by a process of elimination, if he is not related to the other families. My John EVANS worked for a brewery, he died quite young (certainly before 1934.). Thank you, Sharon.

    3. Hi l am trying to find the burial of Henry Williams who died in Cardiff in 1929 aged 66. His last address was Llantarnam Road. I contacted the local council and they don’t have any record of his burial in the local council cemetery. He had lived in Cardiff most of his life and his family all lived in Cardiff. He doesn’t seem to have had any descendants who are now living and l cant find any newspaper articles about him. I don’t know Cardiff and wondered if anyone knows of anywhere he may have been buried. I would be grateful for any help. Andy

    3. No he wasn't! that was a different Peter Gardner, several years younger, born in March quarter 1861. If it was the same one, why would he register most of his children as CUNINGHAM or CUNNINGHAM? That one married in October 1881 in Plymouth I think, either to Tabitha Piper or Jane Lane Walters If he was in Merthyr in 1881 with blind 'mother' Charlote Gardner, how come he went back to Plymouth ? See my later emails on this subject. The key thing to do is to get a few birth certificates for the children, both those registered as CUNNINGHAM and those registered as GARDNER, and check whether the mother's maiden name shows up as Saunders ( or similar). Another thing to do is to check the US records of Sarah GARDNER born 1900 and family stories to see whether they turn up Merthyr Vale and some of the names of the large number of siblings. When I got home this evening my inbox was brimming with wonderful things from you. I have printed all of them and will spread them out on the dining room table tomorrow and see if I can put them all together. Right now my head is swimming with “Peter”, “Catherine”, “Charlotte”, “Mary Ann”, “Margaret”, “Thomas”, “Lydia” and all the rest. I am hoping that after a good night’s rest I will be able to sort them all out. Again, many, many thanks. Elizabeth (Liz) Wight Tacoma, Washington, USA

    3. Hello I'm trying to find any information post 1871 about Henry Waters, a railway guard, working in Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan, Wales and a lodger at 1, Wyndham Row with John & Phoebe Basset in the 1871 census. He was born in Weston, near Bath, Somerset in 1844 to John & Mary Waters. The 1871 census is the last I can find of him. Although there is a Henry Waters in the Probate records who has a railway connection, the executors names don't fit. Anything would be useful! Many thanks Lottie This email and any files transmitted with it were intended solely for the addressee. If you have received this email in error please let the sender know by return. 3. In 1881 Peter Gardner age 21 was with Charlote Gardner b Bristol age 73 who was Blind, in Ynysgau, Merthyr Tydfil. She was listed as Mother, which seems odd as she would have been about 52 at his birth. In 1871 at 9 Appleton Court, Ynysgau Street, Merthyr Tydfil there was Charlotte Gardner age 63 b Bristol, Somerset, who was blind, and with here were tow Grandsons, W. John Cunningham age 14 b Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and Peter Cunningham age 13 b Plymouth, both working as 'Tinman'. In 1861 at Tudor Street, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire there was a family boarding in the household of Robert James, and agricultural labourer b Lancashire. These were Peter Cunningham, 24, Railway Labourer, b Birmingham, Warwickshire, his wife Mary Ann 20, two sons William J Cunningham, 4, b Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and Peter Cunningham, 20 months, b Plymouth,Devonshire, and Charlotte Gardner , mother-in-law, 54, widow, b Gloucestershire, Bristol, who was blind. In September quarter 1856 in Warwick registration district two of the four names on one registration page, GRO ref 6d 593 are Peter Cunningham and Mary Ann Gardner. There is a birth of William John Cunningham in June quarter 1857 in Cheltenham Registration district, GRO ref 6a 360 There is a birth of Peter Cunningham in September quarter 1859 in Plymouth Registration district GRO ref 5b 238 There is a death of Mary Ann Cunningham in June quarter 1862 in Crickhowell registration district, just outside Abergavenny. A newspaper report from Pontypridd magistrates court in the Cardiff Times 22nd June 1866 reports a Peter Cunningham and James Ball committed for trial at the quarter sessions for the theft of two fowls, a cage and three starlings, the property of Henry Jones, at Llantrisant on 8th June. In a newspaper report in the Western Mail 13th May 1869 a Peter Cunningham, William Davies and Richard Morris (a militiaman) were charged with burglariously entering the shop of Charles Prewitt, grocer, in Charlotte Street, Cardiff, and stealing a dish of butter, several loaves of bread and about a quarter of a hundred bloaters. Peter Cunningham was found by a policeman with a bloater and a loaf in his hand. The case at Cardiff magistrates was adjourned. The Cardiff Times report of 24th July of their trial in this case shows that Peter Cunningham was 23 and a seaman, so this seems to be a case of coincidence of name. They were found not guilty, as the only witness to the break-in had absconded. Another court report from the Cardiff Times of 6th July 1872 from Blackwood magistrates court includes a Peter Cunningham in a list of people charged with trespass and damaging grass in a field belonging to the Ebbw Vale company at Cwm. About 50 persons had assembled to see two men fight. In the 1890s a different Peter Cunningham seems to have been in trouble with the law in the Rhondda. There was a marriage at Merthyr Tydfil Parish Church on 28th May 1881 of Peter Cuningham, 21, Bachelor, labourer son of Peter Cuningham, Pedler and Elizabeth Saunders, 21, spinster, daughter of John Saunders, Engineer. Peter signed and Elizabeth made her mark. This marriage is indexed by the GRO in Merthyr Tydfil district June quarter 1881 ref 11a 608 The birth of Mary Ann Cuningham was registered in December quarter 1882 in Merthyr Tydfil registration district ref 11a 452. Charlotte Gardner age 78 died in March quarter 1886 in Merthyr Tydfil district, GRO ref 11a 392 Why did Peter change his name to Gardner, his mother's maiden name? Who knows? And a simple spelling change misled us... My earlier hypothesis about Peter's possible cohabitation was clearly wrong. Whether any of the court appearances involved Peter or his father, or someone completely different we just don't know. 3. If you look at Welsh Newspapers Online https://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=4723 (and links from that to http://newspapers.library.wales/ ) for "Peter Gardner" you come up with a number of items in the Merthyr Express in which Peter Gardner is shown as the Treasurer of the Taff and Cynon District of the South Wales Miners' Federation [known as 'the Fed']. In the article dated 22nd January 1910 there is reference to paying the expenses of the strike at the Navigation pit, and they voted the sum of £10 to the Merthyr Boroughs L.R.C. towards defraying the election expenses of Mr Keir Hardie, and a vote of confidence in Mr. Keir Hardie was carried. http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3815366/3815370/46/ In the edition of 8th October 1910 Peter Gardner presided at a meeting in Merthyr Vale. http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3815847/3815852/47/ At this meeting Mr James Winstone was the main speaker, and referred to the 'Cambrian' dispute and coalowner D.A.Thomas. In the course of the address Mr Winstone said South Wales was the scene of a great tragedy, on the one hand enormous wealth, and power to continue to exploit the workers, and on the other hand extreme poverty. They were opening soup-kitchens in the richest coalfield under God's heaven. No employers anywhere made such immense profits, and yet there were from fifteen to twenty thousand workers who did not receive for a full day's work sufficient to live decent humane lives. After encouraging those present to become missionaries in this fight against capitalism, he advocated the nationalisation of the coal industry. Just occasionally when you are researching someone you had not even heard of a few hours ago you get a window into the world they lived in, and a perception of how they might have viewed it. It would appear that Peter Gardner was an active trade unionist. In fact as far back as 1894 he was vice-chair at a meeting of the Cambrian Miners' Association , at a meeting where W. Abraham MP (Mabon) was present. (South Wales Echo 27 November 1894 http://newspapers.library.wales/view/4601227/4601231/92/ In Merthyr Vale in 1896 he presided at a meeting where 'Mabon' spoke. Merthyr Times and Dowlais Times and Aberdare Echo, 30th January 1896 , http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3099107/3099115/90/ In 1898 South Wales Echo 25th July 1898 (Special edition) Peter Gardner addressed the Merthyr Board of Guardians on behalf of men who were being employed by the Guardians breaking stone in the stone yards, which it was proposed to close. He asked whether his wife and family would have to come into the house (workhouse) if the stone-breaking was stopped. [I assume this was a form of poor relief in which claimants were forced into work. Workhouses were at various time suppliers of broken stone for road-building and repair.] http://newspapers.library.wales/view/4606804/4606807/61/ In 1896 http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3099206/3099211/67/ Merthyr Times and Dowlais Times and Aberdare Echo 16th April 1896 Peter Gardner chaired a meeting of Merthyr Vale Colliery workmen about the election of a medical practitioner to the Colliery. Also in 1896 Merthyr Times and Dowlais Times and Aberdare Echo 30th January 1896 at a meeting addressed by Alfred Thomas MP, Peter Gardner proposed the formation of a Liberal Association at Merthyr Vale. A degree of prescience was shown by the speaker, who referred to the 'Armenian question' and atrocities in Turkey. http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3099107/3099109/6/ In 1910, The Merthyr Express, 6th August 1910 , Mr. Peter Gardner, 18, Bryntaf, Aberfan, desires to THANK the many friends who so kindly assisted him with coupons for the South Wales Daily News free holiday scheme. There were so many from all parts who sent coupons, and, whether successful or not, he feels that his sincere thanks are due to all. http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3815730/3815736/85/ He had previously sought 'coupons' for this free holiday promotion: "MR. PETER GARDNER, 18, Bryntaf, Aberfan, is a candidate for the South Wales Daily News" free holiday. and solicits support of members of t,he Miners' Federation, Manchester- Unity of Oddfellows and R.A.O.B. Coupons should be sent to above address not later than June 4th. Jy. " That item appeared in the Merthyr Express for several weeks in 1910. There is not much on Peter Gardner after 1910, though in 1915 he wrote to the Board of Guardians to complain that the parish doctor had not attended his daughter's confinement until a day after he was sent for. In 1914 he was still district treasurer for the 'Fed'. He appears to have died in 1918. Deaths Mar 1918 Gardner Peter 58 Merthyr T. 11a 787 Google a few of the items and people mentioned and you will see that Peter Gardner was a player in significant social and political developments. Maybe he was appointed to the role of Fed treasurer because his health problems meant he had more time than those in full employment. Maybe he was not working because he had been blacklisted, as many of the officials of the 'Fed' were in later years. There is a book "'The Fed' A History of the South Wales Miners in the 20th Century by Hywel Francis and Dai Smith " which may conceivably have a mention of Peter Gardner, and will certainly show the context of his life and public activities. For photos and a potted history of Merthyr Vale see http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/merthyrvale.htm. There is even a photo of Taff Street. Also http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/aberfan.htm about Aberfan. Aberfan is opposite Merthyr Vale on the other side of the valley of the river Taff. If you are after family history rather than just a list of names and dates, there may be quite a lot to find. 3. subject peter Gardner I found the family of Gardners in 1891. For some reason Ancestry.co.uk could not find them but they came up ok on Find my past. The writing was very difficult to read so I expect it has been mis-transcribed on Ancestry. Charlotte is shown as being born in Exeter Devon, she is 3 mths old. They are in 22 Taff Street, Merthyr Vale, which is quite a few miles from Merthyr Tydfil. I am rather new to the list but have been reading all the posts hoping to find a good researcher who I can hire to help with Peter Gardner and his family. Peter Gardner was born in about 1859 in Plymouth, Devon, England, and married Elizabeth (last name unknown) in about 1882 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales. Elizabeth had been born in about 1861 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. They had a family of eight children, all born in Merthyr Tydfil: Mary Ann Gardner, born about 1883; Lydia b. 1885; William b. 1886; Thomas John b. 1888; John b. 1890; Charlotte b. 1891; Elizabeth b. 1893 and Sarah Vivian, b. 1900, died 6 May 1986 in Great Neck, Nassau County, New York, USA. I have been asked by Sarah Vivian Gardner Hartz?s family (who all live in the USA) to find out about her ancestors. Does anyone know of a good, honest researcher who would help me? Thank you. 3. In 1911 census they appear as GARDNER at 18 Bryntaf, Aberfan, Merthyr Vale Peter gave his age as 51, and he was a Coal Miner Hewer. There follows an extra piece which has been crossed through "unable to work through ill health over the years" Elizabeth gave her age as 50, born Swansea, an it is shown that they had been married for 29 years and had had 14 children, of whom 12 were living and two had died. Curiously, it is clear they had originally put down 15 children, but this has been amended. 10 of the children were living with them, in a house shown as having '5 rooms + 1 room used as small shop'. Those at home were William 25, Thomas John 23, John 21, all shown as Coal Miner Hewer, Charlotte 20, Elizabeth 18, Francis 12, Sarah 11, Ellen 9, Margaret 7 and Daniel 5. Francis and Sarah were shown as 'At school' but the words 'At school' had been crossed out for the three youngest children. Presumably Lydia and Jane had died, married or moved away. Lydia appears to have married, as Lydia Gardner, in December quarter 1904 either to John O'Brien or William Henry Rees. See www.FreeBMD.org.uk for details. As Lydia was one of the eldest, the name of her father shown on her marriage certificate should be of interest. Judging by 1911 census, I think she married John OBrien and by 1911 they had three children and were living in 18 Taff Street, Merthyr Vale.( a few doors form where she lived in 1901) She seems to have died in Merthyr Tydfil district in June quarter 1953. The birth of Ellen seems to be June quarter 1902 as Gardner, and that of Daniel in December quarter 1905 as Gardner. The death of Jane Gardner age 12 was registered in December quarter 1908, all in Merthyr Tydfil. The birth of Sarah Gardner Cunningham was registered March quarter 1900, GRO ref 11a 726. It would seem to be worth purchasing a birth certificate from GRO, using online ordering at https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp This will show the names of her father and mother (including any previous surname of the mother) as advised to the registrar. If the person you are researching for is not aware of Welsh history, they should do an online search for Aberfan. There were two marriages in Glamorgan around 1880-1883 of men called CUNNINGHAM where women called Elizabeth appear on the same page, both in Merthyr Tydfil district. Joseph in 1880 and John in 1882. I do not know whether the death of a John Cunningham age 55 in Cardiff district in December quarter 1900 is relevant. Divorce was extremely expensive and difficult to obtain in late 19th century for ordinary people. A possibility is that Elizabeth was actually married to someone called Cunningham, but from some time in the 1880s started living with Peter Gardner. Careful examination of the birth certificates may show light as to why the children were only registered as Gardner from 1902 onwards. In 1881 Peter Gardner 21 b Plymouth was living in Merthyr with his mother Charlote (shown as age 73) b Bristol, a widow. In 1891 census Mary Ann is shown as age 8 born Trealaw, which is in the Rhondda, and would have been in Pontypridd registration district. She does not seem to have been registered either as Cunningham or Gardner. Finding Peter's birth registration, and his whereabouts in 1871, may be of interest. I am rather new to the list but have been reading all the posts ho ping to find a good researcher who I can hire to help with Peter Gardner and hi s family. Peter Gardner was born in about 1859 in Plymouth, Devon, England, and married E lizabeth (last name unknown) in about 1882 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales. Elizabeth had been born in about 1861 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. They had a family of eight children, all born in Merthyr Tydfil: Mary Ann Gardn er, born about 1883; Lydia b. 1885; William b. 1886; Thomas John b. 1888; John b. 1890; Charlotte b. 1891; Elizabeth b. 1893 and Sarah Vivian, b. 1900, died 6 May 1986 in Great Neck, Nassau County, New York, USA. I have been asked by Sarah Vivian Gardner Hartz’s family (who all live in the U SA) to find out about her ancestors. Does anyone know of a good, honest researcher who would help me? Thank you.
