    3. Was the Swansea Union a workhouse? If so can anyone find the birth of Samuel Andrews(or Parker) born July 1855. ( I have a birth certficate with this information) Father listed as Samuel Andrews (Baker Journeyman) - Mother Ellen Andrews (formerly Parker). If I have the right couple they left two children in the Bideford Workhouse,Devon. Appreciate any help you can give me. Ellen may have given a false name, Samuel Andrews was married to Eliza Parker Regards Daphne

    3. Hi Daphne If Samuel's birth certificate gives Swansea Union as place of birth then yes, it is the workhouse. Swansea Workhouse records are at West Glamorgan Archives - see http://www3.swansea.gov.uk/CalmView/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&id=US&pos=4 I'm not sure whether there would be any mention of Samuel or his family in these records - the inmate registers don't start until 1858, but there might be references elsewhere. Probably best to speak direct to the staff at Swansea Archives. Their son Hugh REES born c1825 was my great great grandfather. Sarah REES aged 2 in the 1851 census as Grand-daughter was the daughter of Hugh and Martha REES. Sarah (birth Cert obtained) born George Town 16 November 1848. Hugh had married Martha EVANS (marriage certificate obtained) at Tabernacle Chapel Merthyr 5 June 1848. Edward REES recorded aged 5 months with his parents Hugh and Martha in the 1851 census was born at George Town 25 Sept 1850 (birth certifcate obtained, registered as Edward Morgan REES). I have the birth certificate for Morgan REES born 24 December 1853 at Cae Pant Twyll – however Morgan did not emigrate to New Zealand with his family in 1860. I suspect Morgan deceased as an infant. A daughter Mary Jane REES was born c1855 as Mary Jane was recorded as aged 4 in 1860 on emigration with her family. Thorough searches by wonderful staff at Merthyr Tydfil Registry Office have failed to locate Mary Jane’s birth Certificate. Very helpful members of this list also were unable to identify a birth registration for Mary Jane REES to parents Hugh REES and Martha nee EVANS. John REES (My great grandfather) was born at Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse 21 June 1858 (birth certificate obtained). Hugh REES appears frequently in the Court Notices in Merthyr Tydfil newspapers for failing to provide for Martha and the children and on another occasion Hugh assaulted Martha. I located at least three occasions where Hugh was sent to Cardiff Goal for various offences. I feel quite sure the Parish and Workhouse Authorities were quite happy to see Hugh and Martha emigrate to Nelson New Zealand and I suspect the Authorities assisted with payments of the fares in March 1860! Another 5 children were born to Martha and Hugh in New Zealand. Thomas REES recorded as 10 in the 1841 census, 19 in the 1851 census and 29 in the 1861 census appears to also have emigrated to Nelson New Zealand in 1862. However within a month of his arrival, brothers Hugh and Thomas were again in strife with the law for assault and both spent a month in jail. After this I can find no record for Thomas. I do not know if he returned to Wales. I can not positively identify him in any census after 1861. Lewis REES aged 26 in the 1841 census, 38 in the 1851 census , 48 in the 1861 census and 59 in the 1871 census I can not locate in the 1881 census. I did locate a Lewis REES, Barber, in Court as a Vagrant “Sleeping in the Ynysfach” and was sent to the Workhouse October 1880. I was able to locate the Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse occupants in the 1881 census but there did not appear to be a Lewis REES? I also noted that Ynysfach was 17 miles from Merthyr Tydfil so I query if it is the same Lewis REES even though both appear to be Barbers/Hairdressers? With appreciation for any clues as to where to look next. I will be visiting Glamorgan Archives in December and plan to check the Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse records. I will also be visiting Merthyr Tydfil. Jenny REES BALDWIN

    3. My gr gr uncle (whom I search because there is so little information on my gr gr grandfather), Bartholomew Shea (Bat Shae, in this census) lived at 32 Mary St in Dowlais on the 1861 census. Living at 30 Mary St were a Morgan and Margaret Rees with Jones granddaughters. There are other Jones' at 31. I have wondered who these people were but have done no more research, nor do I think they are related to me. 3. It can happen that the name shown on the marriage certificate is different in spelling from the signed name. I think that is another reason for the bride's name being indexed twice, with different spellings. Remember that Pontypridd Register Office will have copied out the original entry, whereas GRO would scan and print the entry on their records. What is really needed is someone to look at the register at Glamorgan Archives in Cardiff and photograph it, if you really want to know what Mary gave her name as. 3. Hi Gerwyn, I have looked on FMP for this and can only find this in Swansea! Even by entering one of my ancestors marriage in 1881 I still could not manage to get into FMP for Llantrisant PRs. Also searched FamilySearch which is really good and FREE There is a Matilda Venables born in Llantrisant in 1871, so seemingly this was a local family. Looked at my Llantrisant books [Glam FHS] but of course they stop at 1837 as does the Marriage Index. Looked at Family history Search on the Rhondda Cynon Taff website and found that Aaron married one of two ladies Mary VENABLES and Mary VENAPPLE, as you know. My conclusion is that there was rather bad handwriting on the part of the Vicar that day, and it has been transcribed twice because it looked like VENAPPLE but common knowledge and sense transcribed as VENABLE. What was her father's name and occupation on the Marriage certificate? Have you looked for this family in the census prior to her marriage? Other than that ring the Pontypridd Supt Registrar and ask her opinion. 2. Gerwyn via
    3. Dear List. Does anybody have access to the records of the above church, I have today received a copy of a Marriage which occurred in this church on the 21 Aug 1882, The Marriage was between Aaron REES and his bride ( Is it VENABLE or VINEAPPLE). The Marriage Certificate lists her name but after searching the GRO index from 1840 to 1900 there is only 1 occurrence of this name and that is this Marriage, There is no mention at all of this surname on the 1881 or 1891 census either. I suspect that there is an error because the GRO index lists 5 names on this page. Can anybody confirm Aaron's bride. Gerwyn
