    3. Further to my previous message I show another extract which does include a social commentary of possible general interest. I'm thinking of the practice of letting farm servants go home for the day on the Sabbath, assuming distance allowed of course. Llanvapley parish church, MON "Sunday March 30th being Midlent, or as it is called 'Mothering Sunday' is ill chosen for Counting the Congregation at Church as on that day all farm servants are permitted to visit their homes and many of them attend no church while their absence keeps other members of the master's family at home. My congregation was smaller than usual that day" Gareth Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html Cwmgors/Waun http://www.tytwp.plus.com/Waun/Waun.html -----Original Message----- From: Gareth Sent: Friday, March 11, 2011 2:13 PM To: Glamorgan List Subject: Genuki - 1851 Religious Census comments of interest I've just started extending the coverage I have on Genuki for this Religious census from my 4 base counties of CGN,CMN,PEM,GLA to the rest of my Welsh counties. Now on MON, I thought these comments below may be of general interest, usually, but not always, justifying why church attendance is low, and usually Church of England, but not always. snip

    3. Hi again Graham I've had a look at the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census for both William RICHARD(S)s born about 1844 in Kidwelly. The husband of Sage gave his age as 26yrs in 1871. The 'other' William was living on Lady Street, Kidwelly. He is recorded as a 25yr old Tinplate Worker, living with his wife Ruth. The entry immediately before his is for a Mary RICHARD, a 58yr old widow born in Abergwilly. By 1881 William and Ruth have 2 sons, 9yr old James and 1yr old David. In 1891 James appears to have become William J, aged 19. David C is 11yrs, Lizzy M 9yrs and Anne E 6yrs. The youngest child, Theophulius L, aged 4yrs, suggests that this William RICHARD(S) is the son of Theophilus and Mary, especially as Mary was living near or with him in 1871. It looks like your workmate's William was the son of William and Catherine RICHARD(S). The following 1841 entry could be for William Snr: 1841 HO107 Piece 1385 Book 4 ED13 Folio 19c Page 11 St Mary within, Kidwelly, Carmarthen Elisabeth RICHARD 50yrs Y William RICHARD 20yrs Y Elisabeth RICHARD 15yrs Y (no occupations were given for any of them) Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "robert williams" <canton_cardiff_wales@yahoo.com> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 20, 2011 5:42 PM Subject: [GLA] RICHARDS in 1881 Greetings, this is for a workmate. 3. Try http://www.swanseaheritage.net/article/gat.asp?ARTICLE_ID=37 This Gabriel Powell was a block on almost anything progressive that was suggested in Swansea - for example building proper docks instead of simply allowing small vessels to settle on the tidal mud in the river when the tide went out. I suspect he had descendants of the same name. His family was from Breconshire, I seem to recall. http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=24570 http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=40565 mentions Gabriel's son Rev Thomas Powell I think the famous/notorious Gabriel Powell died around 1791, but it may have been a few years earlier. The source mentioned below says 1788. DEATHS, DEATH NOTICES 20 October 1804 MRS POWELL AT SWANSEA WIFE OF THE REV. THOMAS POWELL OF CANTREFF, BRECONSHIRE This seems to be a son or other relative DEATHS, DEATH NOTICES 22 April 1809 THE LADY OF SIR GABRIEL POWELL HEATHFIELD, SWANSEA. DEATHS, DEATH NOTICES 13 November 1813 CAPTAIN SIR GABRIEL POWELL,J.P., OF HEATHFIELD LODGE, SWANSEA - COMMANDER OF FAIRWOOD CAVALRY. P3. There appear to be at least two other people called Gabriel POWELL appearing in www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian, one of whom impersonated a voter at an election and seems to have been a painter. If you have Ancestry ( or can access it at a library etc) you can search on Public Trees for Gabriel Powell born about 1710 you will find a Hargreaves family tree which seems to connect the Gabriel Powell in Aberystwyth with the two previous generations, but there does not seem to be much in the way of evidence. Best of luck researching Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: <Anndriscoll@aol.com> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 20, 2011 8:47 PM Subject: [GLA] Who knows about sir Gabriel Powell of Swansea? > Hi, my step brother may possibly be related to the above and I am trying > to find out what I can about him and subsequent family. 3. WESTERN MAIL THURSDAY DECEMBER 2. 1926.  No. 282. PEDESTRIANS IGNORED.- £5 Fine On Cardiff Motor Driver. On October 27 a civil servant and his friend were walking down Great Western Lane, when they found the pavement blocked by a lorry and a horse and cart drawn up against the pavement. They had to step off the pavement to get past. They were on the roadway by the lorry, when a motor horn sounded.   The civil servant James Arthur DENSHAW held up his arm for the motor to stop, but the driver, Herbert HALLETT, took no notice, and the two pedestrians had to jump hurriedly aside to escape the van that HALLET was driving.   The sequel occupied the attention of the attention of the Cardiff Stipendiary (Mr. St. John FRANCIS-WILLIAMS) on Wednesday morning . HALLETT'S story was that no signal had been given by the prosecutor, except with an umbrella , and that the two men steped off the pavement right in front of him, but were never in danger .   HALLETT was fined £5, or a month's imprisonment.   The witness called for the prosecution not only refused to accept their costs, but, it is said, had decided to assist the driver to pay the fine.   Mr. R. BOOTH, town-clerk's department, prosecuted. ROATH COLLISION-Wife Thrown From Car Into Road.   A motor collision at the Juncture of Ninian-road, Wellfield-road, and Penylan-road, Roath, was the subject of a prosecution before the Cardiff stipendiary (Mr. St. John FRANCIS-WILLIAMS) on Wednesday  morning , when Harry N. RICHES, driver of one of the cars, was summoned for reckless driving.   Mr. R. BOOTH (for the town-clerk's department) prosecuted, and Mr. H. H. HASLAM defended.    Richard HOLLOWAY, of Axminster-road, Cardiff, said that on Saturday, November 6, he was driving his car along Wellfield-road in the direction of Penylan Hill, and when he (witness) was almost across Ninian-road defendant came along in his car at an excessive speed and crashed into the rear of his car. The car was carried bodily by the force of the impact and slewed around, being brought up against a tree. The car was badly damaged and witness's wife thrown out on the roadway.   The defence was that defendant was travelling along Ninian-road with the intention of turning up  Penylan-road, and when 20 or 30 yards from the crossing he sounded his horn and applied his brakes gently. The road was greasy and his car skidded straight on and crashed into HOLLOWAY'S car.    Defendant was fined £10 and costs, or two months, and his licence was suspended for six months. 1. [GLA] Who knows about sir Gabriel Powell of Swansea?
    2. Hi, my step brother may possibly be related to the above and I am trying to find out what I can about him and subsequent family. I have his Will from the National Archives but it is written with a straight edged nib I think and I find it impossible to read. Any offers to assist here please? My step brother's g.grandmother was born 1835 in Llangain, Carmarthenshire, an illegitimate child of Gabriel Powell and Elziabeth Anthony. The only Gabriel Powell I can find on the censuses is a one born c1812 in Swansea, living in Aberystwyth on the census, but having searched all the parishes in Swansea on Hugh Wallis's site, and the IGI on family search for a baptism for him, I have come up with nothing. Another lister suggested Sir Gabriel Powell of Swansea, and as I said I have purchased a copy of his will from TNA I am wondering if the Gabriel Powell born c1812 is a son or relation to the Sir Gabriel. Any information will be much appreciated. Many thanks Ann

Charges of assault and of committing an act calculated to impede the supply of fuel and of riotous assembly  were heard at Pontypridd on Wednesday against Robert LEWIS, David PHILLPOTTS, and John JAMES, Blaenllechau.   Frank John RICHARDSON, a miner, of Albert-street, said that he met a large crowd, booing and throwing stones. He was struck and rather badly bruised. He ran part of the way back to the colliery, as he was afraid  of further trouble.    Police-constable William HEMLOCK said that he had to use his cape to shield his face when stones were thrown.   Police-sergeant Thomas WELLS, of Brighton, said that he kept the crowd under observation, and they eventually became hostile. He said to them : "We treat you as men, and we expect you to teach us such." The crowd then climbed up a bank, and threw stones, LEWIS catching him on the thigh with one and bringing witness to his knees.   The Stipendiary said the charges of assaulting RICHARDSON would be dismissed, as also would be the charge of attempting to impede the supply of fuel. Prisoners would be committed to the assizes on bail on the charges of assaulting Police-sergeant WELLS and Police-constable HEMLOCK, and also of riotous assembly. MOTORING FATALITY-Kerb Mistaken "For White Line" At Port Talbot.   Joseph METCALFE (38) at Glamorgan Assizes on Wednesday with manslaughter at Port Talbot on July 13, 1926. Mr. Joshua DAVIES (instructed by Messrs. Moses THOMAS and Co., Port Talbot) prosecuted.   The case was a sequel to a collision between a motor-car and a motor-cycle combination, in which the deceased, William BAILEY, and a son, Idrids BAILEY, were riding.    In defence accused told jury that he mistook the kerbing of the footpath for a white line on the road, and that was how the accident happened.   METCALFE was found not guilty and discharged. CARDIFF WOMAN'S FATE.-Motorist Pleads Car Did Not Hit Her.   An accident on the Newport-road, Cardiff, near Clifton-street, on August 18, had a sequel at the Glamorgan Assizes at Swansea on Wednesday when Harry LERMON (29), a draper, pleaded not guilty to a charge of the manslaughter of Hannah LEWIS, a woman 62 years of age.   Mr. T. W. LANGMAN (instructed by Mr. Sydney JENKINS, Cardiff) prosecuted and Mr. Kirkhouse JENKINS (instructed by Mr. Barnett JANNER, Cardiff) defended.    Counsel said accused was driving his car down Newport-road with the apparent intention of turning into Clifton-street, and it was the allegation of the prosecution that he drove the vehicle at such a speed and with such negligence that he knocked down the deceased, who was standing on the pavement between two small children with her daughter, waiting for a tramcar. The car was alleged to have swerved 38ft. across the road, and to have dragged deceased off the pavement for a distance of about 20ft. She died on September 3. One of the children was knocked down, but did not sustain very serious injuries.   Dr. Ellis John WILLIAMS, Cardiff, said deceased's cranium was exceptionally thin; it was quite transparent in parts.   Accused said that the man in front of the car caused one of the passengers in the vehicle to become frightened, and he (accused) was jerked. The sudden jerk caused his foot to slip off the brake on to the accelerator pedal, and when he was trying to swerve one of the passengers caught hold of the steering wheel and pulled it round as well. He denied that he struck the deceased. In cross-examination he said he was a yard from deceased as he passed, and deceased for some unknown reason fell after the car had passed.   The court adjourned till to-day (Thursday). CAR MOUNTS THE PATHWAY-Three Persons Hurt At Whitchurch. A motor-van, driven by Trevor WELDON, proceeding from Cardiff to Whitchurch, accidentally ran into Mr. William John STRINGER, a Londoner on a visit to a sick friend, near the church at Whitchurch on Wednesday. Mr. STRINGER was knocked down and his injuries included two broken ribs, severe injuries to the head, and concussion. He was in a somewhat serious condition late last night.    In endeavouring to avoid Mr. STRINGER the car mounted the pathway, struck a wall near the Plough Hotel, injuring Mrs. Elsie HOPTRUTH, 18, Velindre-place, Whitchurch, and Mrs. Gertrude GRIFFITHS, of St. Margaret's-road, Whitchurch, about the legs. Both were able to proceed home. John Patrick.

BARROW SHAFT THRUST-Newport Youth Dies On His Birthday. "A very sad coincidence," remarked Mr. W. Lyndon MOORE, D.L., Newport Coroner, at an inquest on Wednesday, when it was stated that the subject of the inquiry, William Norman HOPCROFT (17), 193, Durham-road, Newport, had died on his birthday at the Royal Gwent Hospital following injuries sustained at St. Julian's Brickworks, where he was employed as a brick-cutting machinist.   Mr. F. H. DAUNCEY represented the St. Julian's Brickworks Company, Mr. H. FOTHERINGHAM, Inspector of Factories, watched the proceedings.    Edward Charles BALLET, a labourer, said he heard a noise of a wheelbarrow bumping against a post. He went to the spot and found the deceased in a crouching position and moaning.    Henry HOPCROFT said when his son was brought home he said, "something seemed to go through me."    Dr. D. V. DAVIES stated, that HOPCROFT was admitted to the hospital in a state of collapse suffering from abdominal injuries. He commenced an operation, but deferred a fuller examination owing to HOPCROFT'S critical condition. Death took place about twenty minutes later.   In returning a verdict of "Accidental death," the Coroner said it was one of the most incomprehensible accidents. RUNAWAY TRAIN THRILL-Collision Averted By Signalman. A collision between a runaway goods train and a passenger train on the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway at Coelbren, Swansea Valley, was averted by the presence of mind of a signalman at Coelbren Junction.    Whilst a goods train from Brecon to Swansea was descending the gradient from Penwyllt station the brakes failed, and the train ran wildly down the valley.    At the same time a passenger train was due from Swansea on the same line.   Seeing that, the signals were ignored by the goods train, Signalman FORD realised that something was wrong. He then quickly diverted the goods train on to a mineral siding at Coelbren Junction, where it crashed into several empty coal wagons, several trucks of both trains being completly wrecked.    The driver, S. SUMMERS, and his fireman jumped off just before the crash and escaped unhurt, and the guard also escaped injuries.   The train was turned into the sidings just before the passenger train approached the station , and but for FORD'S promptness there would have been a serious accident. TRAPPED IN WATER PIT-Miner's All-Night Ordeal. Broadmoor Colliery, Kilgetty, was the scene of a thrilling fight for life on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.   It appears that on Tuesday evening three men were in the pit when water commenced to pour in from an adjacent disused mine.   Two of the men got clear, but the third, Sidney THOMAS, of Gumfreston Cottage was trapped by the water.    Pumping operations were started immediately, and continued throughout the night.   Mr. J. L. H. WILLIAMS, of Narberth, the owner of the colliery, was quickly on the scene, and gave every assistance possible.    Early on Wednesday morning the man was brought to to the surface, and appeared little worse for his adventure. At times the water reached his mouth.   A curious point is that THOMAS has had two similar experiences in other collieries in South Wales. RECENT WILLS-A Brynamman Colliery Proprietor. Mr. Joseph HARGREAVES, of Station-road, Brynamman, retired colliery proprietor, who died November 9, 1925, aged 82 years, left estate of the gross value of £61,993, of which £50,373 is net personalty. Probate of the will, dated October 11, 1919, with two codicils, has been granted to his son, Mr. Frederick HARGREAVES, of The Hawthorns, Fforestfach, Swansea, colliery manager, and his daughter, Miss Alice HARGREAVES, of Station-road, aforesaid.
