I have found a Clifford family who arrived in Boston in June 1865 on the ship, Bosphorous which left from Liverpool. The names listed on the ship's list are Mary Clifford, who is the Mother, and children Mary, Hy, Bird, and James. Could the name Hy, be a nickname for Margaret, and could Bird be a nickname for Bridget? The dates of birth/ages are the same for Hy as for Margaret Clifford and bird, for Bridget Clifford and I suspect it is the same family, although the names are a bit different. My family members are in the 1861 census living at Heolwemod District. I am assuming that the father, James Clifford, my great grandfather, left for Boston at an earlier date, although I haven't found him on any ship lists yet. Presumably you are talking about the Taliesin Bevan who was born in about 1846 in Dowlais, Glamorgan, and in 1871 was living in St James, Durham? 2. Bridget
    3. Hi Nancy, I checked this families arrival on Ancestry and the names of Bridget and Margaret have been mistranscribed which is very common on this site. I also found them on the 1861 Census and the names are as you say there. On the Ships Passenger List, Bridget has been abbreviated to Brid, not Bird. Margaret has been abbreviated to Mg. not Hy. Always try to look at the original image if possible and hopefully you can figure it out from there. I have sent corrections into Ancestry so hopefully that will help if others are looking. Cheers, Bridget in Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Rogers" <rogers1n@comcast.net> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 24, 2011 04:47 PM Subject: [GLA] Question about names on ship sailing lists?? >I have found a Clifford family who arrived in Boston in June 1865 on the > ship, Bosphorous which left from Liverpool. 3. Hi Larry, I am in the same boat...I sent the details and they sent me the cetificate but it is a 6 weeks baby not a 50+ person I was looking for. My g/g/grandfathers name was Martin Hooley, and I know he died sometime between 1851 and 1857. I found 2 names Howley and Houly in this time so sent for the Howley name which is the above. Now I will try the Houly name instead. Do I have to send back the first certificate or will they forward another free of charge instead or do I have to order another and pay for it? Any idea? Never received a certificate before from Gro. As I'm interested in the surname Jennett or Jemmett and one of my distant relatives by the surname Jennett (Sophia Jennett) married a Joseph Davies and according to the 1911 census was living in the Rhondda , before I contact the registrar in Pontypridd requesting birth certficates .I wonder if there's anyone who might have these amongst their ancestors who might confirm that these are/are not the children of Joseph and Sophia . thanks Buddug Hollett

    1. [GLA] Genuki - 1851 Religious Census extraction
    2. Gareth
    3. Continuing my extraction of the MON entries from the 1851 Religious Census - this entry may be of general interest. <The Forge Room, Lantarnam, Baptist Erected 1849, not used exclusively as a place of worship Attendance - morning 32 + 22 scholars, afternoon 56 scholars, evening 65 Thomas Morgan, Manager, Pudler Cwmbran Iron Works (Llanfihangel Llantarnum) I don't think I've previously noticed a entry where the chapel was apparently based within the Iron Works (or any other works) and in a building seemingly used by the latter too. Perhaps it started out as a works sponsored Sunday School for children and developed into a full blown chapel from there. Neither do I recall seeing before an informant who was obviously a member of the works management. Should this snippet give anyone a taste for more background on links between schools, religion and industry in south Wales around the mid C19th, then there is a wealth of data on Genuki's pages, as with this selection; http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Schools.html Day Schools in Glamorgan in 1847 http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/Roberts.html The Journal of William Roberts ('Nefydd'), 1853-62 http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BritishSchools.html British Schools in South Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CollierySchls.html Colliery Schools in South Wales in the Nineteenth Century http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CopperSchls.html Copper-Works Schools in South Wales during the Nineteenth Century http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/VolEd.html Voluntary Education in the Industrial Areas of Wales before 1870 On a different point, I have so far seen hardly any entries in MON where Parish Church services were held in Welsh, and on one I do recall 1 service was in Welsh and the other in English. Apart from anything else I guess there were very few bilingual Church clerics around in 1851. I emphasise that I am specifically referring to MON here, but there were no doubt similarities to Glamorgan. 2. Hi, You can search the Archives for the email if it was also sent to the full list. Directions to do that are at the bottom of every Group email (like this one). If it was a private message to you only, then I hope the person sees this. You might consider putting the surnames in the subject line if you don't get a response, as that might catch their attention. Good luck--I hate it when I lose messages!
