Kevin Mc Cormack <cardiff2cork@hotmail.com> wrote "... I'm stuck on the occupation for the bride. Ive taken a shot of the entry for her occupation and I'm really stuck. It looks like Gongle owner but obv. isn't ...... Regards, Kevin." An occupation I have seen on the British census several times is 'Mangle Owner'. A distant cousin had some more information about an ancestor who followed this occupation. She used the mangle to partly dry clothes for neighbours after they had done their washing, in return for a small payment. I believe she kept the mangle outside her house and customers brought their wet washing to be mangled. It always seems to be a female occupation, although usually older married women or widows. Ian.
Hello All, Many thinks to all who offered help. I was almost convinced it had to do with sanitation of sorts......just goes to show you can think too much! Jeff put me on track first with the two wheeled carriage and Jen came up trumps ....also adding a bit of Iriish culture too. I passed on the whole cert. to Jen and this has taught me to pass on the whole documant and not part of. Find below...... I think this is the answer... and the last word is "owner" - the priest had written gingle man, and corrected it to gingle owner - so nothing to do with night soil collections - but you are right with the two wheeled carriage ! Also, it refers to Mr Beale, and not the new Mrs Beale because of the correction. Jingle or Gingle A covered two-wheeled car used in Cornwall, the south of Ireland, and in Australia. Oxford English Dictionary. and quote from James Joyce 1916: They drove in a jingle across Cork while it was still early morning and Stephen finished his sleep in a bedroom of the Victoria Hotel. - James Joyce, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man "which also quotes other persons in a Cork Census as a Gingle Owners... " Many thanks all, Kevin.
List members NEWS ITEM 291.- I keep getting MAILER DAEMON, so you will have to read them on DYFED or MONMOUTH LISTS. Sorry. John Patrick
Some entries and their comments do stand out - this one from MON struck me as note worthy. There was 'space' in the Church for 91 persons, and the total parish population was 129. Apart from being something of a squash anyway, the 2 non-attendees must have felt a little isolated! Of course they may have been incapacitated in some way. * Llangoven Parish Church Attendance - no actual/average figures provided "The entire population, with only two exceptions, attend the Parish Church, when service is held alternately morning/afternoon" 1 service in English James Farquhar, Perpetual Curate Gareth Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html Cwmgors/Waun http://www.tytwp.plus.com/Waun/Waun.html
I've been looking on line and I came across a "Gong scourer" someone who emptied toilets etc. Could "Gongle" represent toilet?
I only use this list...... I have an Irish marriage cert from 1868, I'm stuck on the occupation for the bride. Ive taken a shot of the entry for her occupation and I'm really stuck. It looks like Gongle owner but obv. isn't ...... if anyone wants to make an attempt I'll gladly send on the pic. I'll reply to list instead of everyone. Regards, Kevin.
Sorry cannot get it through.? It keeps coming back MAILER DAEMON- you can read it on the DYFED LIST or MONMOUTHSHIRE LIST. John Patrick

Sheila - you'll probably need to look at Deri Chapels & Churches. Also going north from the farm is Capel Brithdir, which may have been more active in 1910. More can be found about Capel Brithdir from a book on Gelligaer written by the wife of the vicar of St Gwladys' church - Bargoed in the '60's. It'll probably be reference in the Lib.o Wales. Dear Listers Apologies for posting this.. but it might be of interest even if they were not born in the Dyfed/Glam area... Ena and Lily, 101 year old twins (Brecon area) can be seen looking at their own names on the 1911 census - both apparently very feisty and fit (see Video link below) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-mid-wales-12861094 and here on a ITV short video… including an interesting tour of Old Swansea with local historian Colin James http://www.itv.com/wales/oldest-twins-101-sign-census46397/ .. look out for the mention of the "ironically named" Salubrious Passage… which led to the slummy area – and perhaps the ladies of the night as the Glamorgan List has discussed this subject recently ! Regards Jen
