    3. WESTERN MAIL TUESDAY DECEMBER 7. 1926.  No. 297. ABERYSTWYTH COLLEGE-Dr. T. JONES Mentioned For Headship. A correspondent of the "Teachers' World" connects the name of Dr. Thomas JONES, M.A., Principal Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet, with the vacant headship of Aberystwyth College.    Many old students wonder whether he will not become the principal of his alma mater. Dr. JONES, ran the late Mr. J. H. DAVIES closely when the latter secured the appointment. photo on page 6. MR. RICHARD JENKINS-One Of The Oldest Solicitors In Swansea.    One of the oldest Swansea solicitors, Mr. Richard JENKINS, who had been in practice in the town for over 44 years, died at his home in Richmond-road, Swansea, at the age of 70 years.    Mr. JENKINS was the son of Mr. Richard JENKINS, of Gellyfeddau, Llangyfelach. Together with his cousin, Mr. C. B. JENKINS, he carried on the well-known legal business of Messrs. R. and C. B. JENKINS up to 1923, when he retired, and Mr. Lionel R. LLOYD, joined the firm, which is now known as Messrs. R. and T. B. JENKINS and LLOYD.    Mr. JENKINS was for some years a member of the Swansea Board of Guardians, but otherwise took no part in public affairs. He was highly-esteemed, especially in professional circles. CAR AND LORRY CRASH-Haverfordwest Grocers Awarded Damages.   The sequel to a motor collision at Treffgarne, Pembrokeshire, came before Judge Frank DAVIES at the Haverfordwest County-court on Monday, when Messrs. W. H. JOHN and Son, wholesale grocers, Haverfordwest, sued James LOVELUCK, of  Aberkenfig, Bridgend, for £72. 2s.3d. in respect of damages to plaintiffs' lorry and £12. 2s.3d. for car hire.   Mr. Trevor HARRIES (instructed by Messrs. WALDRON, Son, and GREEN, Cardiff) for plaintiffs, and Mr. Clarke WILLIAMS (instructed by Messrs. Eaton EVANS and WILLIAMS, Haverfordwest) for defendant.    Mr. Trevor HARRIES explained that the claim arose out of the alleged negligent driving of the defendant's car. On May 10 last the plaintiff's lorry was proceeding from Letterson to Haverfordwest, and when near Treffgarne Quarry the defendant's car overtook the lorry. Although the road was 20ft. wide at this spot the car swerved towards its proper side and in doing so struck the off hub of the front wheel of the lorry, causing it to crash into a telegraph pole. A police-sergeant was on the scene shortly afterwards and there was an allegation then that the plaintiff swerved out, but evidence would be called as to the tracks of the lorry being perfectly straight.    For the defence Mr. Clarke WILLIAMS submitted that there was a certain mystery about the accident. Defendant denied emphatically that he struck the lorry. No satisfactory material evidence had been called to show that it had been struck.    His Honour gave judgment for the plaintiffs' for £43. BURIAL OF MISS S. A. PRICE, ABERAMAN. The funeral of Miss Sarah Ann PRICE, daughter of Mr. Watkin PRICE, of 33, Gladstone-street, Aberaman, took place at the Aberdare Cemetery on Monday. A service at the house was conducted by the Rev. J. Cadvan JONES, B.A., B.D. (pastor of the Saron Congregational Church) who also officiated at the graveside. FUNERAL OF NEWPORT VETERAN.   The funeral took place on Monday of Mr. William Winter PHILLIPS, of Penllyn, Stow Park-avenue, Newport, who died on December 2 at the age of 93. Mr. Winter PHILLIPS, who was well known in South Monmouthshire agricultural circles, is survived by a widow, two sons (Messrs. Mapson PHILLIPS and Roy PHILLIPS) and six daughters. The vicar (the Rev. D. E. LLEWELLYN-JONES, B.A.) officiated. Only members of the family were present. John Patrick

    3. WESTERN MAIL TUESDAY DECEMBER 7. 1926.  No. 296. WELSH GIRL AND BOGUS COUNT-Promised Marriage In France.   The story of a Pontypridd girl, who was lured away by a bogus count on promise of marriage, was related at Christchurch (Bournemouth) on Monday when Bernard WEBB (38), 6, Locarno Villas, Christchurch, was sentenced to three month's imprisonment with hard labour for obtaining goods and lodgings by false pretences.   Miss BATTERICK said WEBB, who described himself as Count Lorraine, called on her for furnished rooms and brought his "intended wife" with him. He paid two weeks' rent, but later said that he could not pay. He said he was expecting some money from France to come through a local agency, and he could not understand the delay.    Miss Hilda JAMES, aged eighteen, of 22, Vaughan-street, Pwllgwaen, Pontypridd, said that she left home on December 21, 1925, and took employment as a waitress at a Bournemouth boarding-house. She stayed there until the beginning of November.    She first met WEBB on July 18. He had told her of a Scotch marriage, which he said was not binding.   She went to Christchurch and lived with him as man and wife on the understanding that a civil or religous marriage would take place later in France.   She did not hear him say to Miss BATTERICK  he was Count Lorraine.   She (witness) paid the first 15s. rent and WEBB the other 15s.  Cross-examined by WEBB, witness said she did not remember him saying according to the law of the land he was married, but according to the law of the church he could prove he was single.  They had never been married.  The Clerk: Did he tell you he could not get legal marriage?  Witness: He said he could get a legal marriage in France, but not in England.   It was stated that WEBB had a bad record, and served a similar term at Birmingham for a like offence. P.C.'S " OFF DUTY " CASE-His Road Blocked By Cars On Redlaver Hill.   When Charles Henry KEEN was charged at Whitchurch Police-court on Monday with driving a motor-car to the danger of the public Police-constable Thomas MORGAN, of the Cardiff City Force, related what took place on Redlaver Hill, Llantrisant-road, when he was off duty and enjoying a spin on his motor-cycle.   The constable was proceeding down the hill when he saw two cars approaching, one on the crown of the road and the other some yards beehind, hugging the kerb on the wrong side. Seeing that he could not pass, witness stopped his machine against the kerb, but remained astride. He was preparing to dismount, when the second car swung to its near side, missing witness by about 3ft.   Defendant: The motor-cyclist did not seem to have full control over his machine. "The cyclist came straight towards me, and I began to wonder where he was going to," said defendant , and "I turned more to my right side of the road."   Defendant was fined £5. WOMEN TO LEAD MOB-Lord Halsbury And Men's " Cowardly" Move.   Elizabeth WILCOX (54), Olive CONNELLY (45), Mabel RIDD (47), Beatrice May JONES (32), Mary A. ROGERS (52), Patrick CONNOLLY(52), Alfred PALFREM (45) Check-weigher, Granville RICHARDS (29), Wilfred CHICK (43), Ernest JEFFRIES (30), Bert PARTRIDGE (47), and Walter HOWELLS (40), were charged with unlawful assembly with a view of preventing Thomas H. BENNETT, George BARNETT, and Daniel JONES from following their employment at the Wyndham Collieries, Ogmore Vale, on July 12.    Lord HALSBURY, K.C., and Mr. Kirkhouse JENKINS were for the Crown, and Mr. Artemus JONES, K.C., and Mr. Trevor HUNTER (instructed by Messrs. MORGAN, BRUCE and NICHOLAS) defended.   Lord HALSBURY said it was wholly more serious when an attempt was made to prevent safety men from working. In this case the method adopted by the officials of the men was most cowardly, for they put the women in front of the crowd.   Thomas BENNETT deposed to going to work with other safety men when they were confronted by a large crowd, 30 or 40 women being front, barring their progress. He got through, only to be met by another crowd farther on, when the defendant PALFREMAN stepped forward and said witness could not go to work as the crowd were against it. Witness found it impossible to get through the crowd.   The hearing was adjourned. HUSBAND SENTENCED-Wounded Wife Declines To Give Evidence. Patrick James GODDARD (23), labourer, was charged before Mr. Commisioner Hugh JONES, K.C., with wounding his wife Rosina GODDARD, at Swansea on October 4, with intent to murder her.   Mr. Verity PRICE (instructed by Mr. Rupert LEWIS) prosecuted, and Mr. A. K. LITTLE defended.   As the prisoner was led through the court to take his stand in the dock his wife cried to him as he passed. "Never mind, darling; cheer up, darling."   It was stated for the prosecution that for six months the couple had been living on the sands at Swansea and at Singleton Park. On the evening in question they in a Swansea at an hotel. Just before "Stop tap" the landlord had to put the prisoner out, and he produced from his pocket a knife and threatened to stick it into the landord. The landlord was not touched, but about the same time Rosina GODDARD was near the entrance to the public-house, and it appeared she made a remark about Irishmen and the prisoner rushed at her and stabbed her in the left side of her neck. As she fell he stabbed her in the back. The wound in the neck was extremely serious partly severing the jugular artery. But for the timely assistance of the police in rendering first-aid and of a surgical operation being promptly performed the woman would not be alive now. Prisoner ran away and was arrested the following morning in Singleton Park.   When charged he said: "I remember nothing about it . I never had a knife."  When prisoner's wife was called to give evidence she exercised her right to refuse to do so.   While one of the witnesses was giving evidence Rosina GODDARD shouted, "Shut up you!" She was taken out of court.   Prisoner said he had no recollection of being at the Fishguard Arms that night. He had been drinking.   The Jury found prisoner guilty of wounding with intent to do grievious bodily harm. The Foreman added that the jury wished to mention how important and helpful and the first-aid rendered so readily by Police-constable James MacDONALD.    The Judge: A very true and proper sentiment.    Prisoner was sentenced to nine months' hard labour. John Patrick

    3. Western Mail Tuesday December 7th. 1926.   No. 294. ABERFAN MAN'S GRIEF. Remarking that the man took his life by throwing himself in front of the train, the North Glamorgan coroner (Mr. R. J. RHYS) returned a verdict of "Suicide" at an inquest held on Monday at Merthyr Vale on Charles ARSCOTT (68), a colliery workman, of Bryntaff, Aberfan.   It was stated that the man had grieved over the death of a daughter, who was killed in a recent motor accident at Cardiff. CARDIFF WIDOW KILLED BY A FALL.  Falling down the stairs at 22, Edward-street, Cardiff, about three months ago. Mrs. Emma Eliza NASH (80), a widow , died on Saturday. At the inquest by the Cardiff Coroner on Monday a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned. ABERAVON MEN SENTENCED.  David Hopkin DAVIES, Green Park-street, Aberavon, and Edwin R. DAVIES, Sandfields, Aberavon, were at a special Port Talbot court on Monday sentenced to three months respectively for being found in the enclosed premises of the Port Talbot Corporation yard on Friday night last. BOY'S FATAL HEAD WOUND-Lad To Young To Go For Trial.   The story of a fatal quarrel between two schoolboys in a stable was related at the inquest held on Monday by the North Glamorgan Coroner (Mr. R. J. RHYS) on David LEWIS (11), of Taff-street, Merthyr Vale.  E. R. ROBERTS (12), said he was standing outside the stable door with another lad, Peter O'BRIEN, on November 26, when LEWIS came out crying "Oh my eye, oh, my eye." LEWIS was bleeding from the nose and from a wound near the right eye. Previously he had heard a boy named Joseph SMITH, who was using a pitchfork to turn up some bedding in the stable, saying:" I will stick this pike in you if you don't go out." LEWIS was the only lad with SMITH at the time.   Peter O'BRIEN (11), stated that SMITH and LEWIS had been quarrelling.  Joseph SMITH (12), said he was clearing up the stable. LEWIS and O'BRIEN refused to leave and he turned them out. There was a pitchfork in his hand, but he would not say whether LEWIS was struck by it. The stable was then in darkness.   The Coroner: You hit him right enough, and you just learn to tell the truth. you are to young to be sent for trial for this sort of thing, but what you deserve is a good whipping.    Dr. KING said that LEWIS died three days later from concussion of the brain and hemorrhage, which was undoubtedly due to a blow received on the inside corner of the right eye. No great force would be required to cause the injury. He thought that the butt end of the pike shaft must have caught the lad.    In recording a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence the Coroner remarked that if the persons concerned were grown-up people it would probably have been a case of manslaughter. He had no doubt that the boy SMITH lost his temper with LEWIS and poked him with the pitch-fork handle, and unfortunately struck him a fatal blow. He trusted that this would prove a warning to SMITH to keep his temper under control. "Don't use anything you may have in your hand to hit a boy," remarked Mr. RHYS. "If you must strike anyone, use your fists. Those are nature's weapons." SMITH the Coroner further observed, was to young to answer for his action in a court of law. John Patrick.
