    3. Thanks Jeff, Makes you wonder whether he absconded and when, the Lady Bertha was not his first ship, it was easy to get a berth as a fireman, no previous experience needed just muscle. another odd case was William Westgate, Able Seaman born 1846 Newcastle, the Gladstone O.N. 66391 of Swansea [previous ship] Ibex of London. Signed on Swansea 11th May 1882 Left behind in Puerto Cabello Venezuela 29th Jul.1882. Left behind not for Desertion, Sickness, Death or Mutual Agreement but as the British Consul in Puerto Cabello Venezuela 29th July 1882 stated on the agreement " I hereby certify that the seaman William Westgate was left behind in this port, in my charge he being by his own confession the assassin of Lord Cavendish of Phoenix Park Dublin Ireland on the 6th of May last. In faith in which I hereunder set my hand and Offix the Seal of my Office ~ Rob Conn HBM Vice Consul. Waikato Times Newspaper ~ London 15th Dec ~ William Westgate who confesses to participation in the Phoenix Park Murders of last May has arrived at Plymouth from Jamiaca. He is, apparently, in an imbecile state of mind. It turns out at his trial he was onboard his previous ship at the time of the murder guess he was crazy. Rgds Bryan

    3. Unless Boston death certificates from the 1890's are better than those from New York City in that time frame, I would not count on better place of birth information on his death certificate. I would also be tempted to check church records. Might the baptisms in Wales (if that is where they had their children) be in church register books? If they are, they could be a gold mine. I also wonder if anyone else might have information about your great grandparents birthplaces in Ireland, on Irish genealogy sites. I don't know if any of the databases I know of, for researching births and baptisms in Ireland and Wales, will have your grandparents or children listed, but maybe there might be an appropriate database on the following page in those sections. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/birthindexes-bri.html On 4/13/11, rdmnanst@aol.com <rdmnanst@aol.com> wrote: > Nancy > > > Since you have his death info, Aug 30, 1892, Boston, check out to see if > Mass. has his death certificate. > Theres a good chance his birth Town or Co with be on it. > > > Doug > Missouri > > -----Original Message----- > From: Nancy Rogers > To: glamorgan@rootsweb.com > Sent: Tue, Apr 12, 2011 7:03 pm > Subject: [GLA] Clifford Family > > > I'm trying so hard to find out where in Ireland my g-grandparents lived > before they arrived in Wales. >....... > > James Clifford and his wife Mary Ellen (Corbitt or Corbett) were married in > Methryr Tydfil in 1855. 3. Hello Nancy Most of us with Irish in Wales ancestors have or have had a similar problem. I was lucky with one of mine that eventually he entered Waterford as his birthplace on a census record and that led me to his parents through the naming pattern of oldest son after the paternal Grandfather. I finally figured out where his wife was from when her mother came to live with them, another census record with birth county. Another route to try is to see if you can find out where those who witnessed their marriage were from - could be relatives or friends from back home. Many of the Irish who came to Wales in that time frame came as virtual ballast in the ships. No records kept of passage at all. HOpe this is of some help. Don't give up! 3. Dear List, Is anyone familiar with the Bazaar, Porth? What exactly is it? today's version of a hypervalue? or back then more upper class? A bazaar was another form of a Chapel jumble Sale to me as a child. I was always given the white elephant stall to look after. I'm trying to track down the sole beneficiary to a member of my family. This person is unknown to me " Annie Lewis" Cardiff. Annie Lewis is also buried with another family member another Lewis in Ferryside Carmarthenshire. I haven't been able to track down any details on Annie Lewis, ( marriage, census ) I did find and send away for her death certificate, Died June 1920, Shirley Road, Cardiff, wife of William George Lewis, Retired Boot Dealer. The burial records show Annie as a Widow, the informant of her death R. Lewis brother-in-law, in attendance The Bazaar, Porth, Glam. If anyone can help with the Bazaar, or who is R. Lewis . Many Thanks Jane M ( W. Auss)
