Can anyone tell me.. where were the victims of the 1913 disaster buried. Was there a general burial area, or were the men and boys buried in the burial ground of their family chapel/church - and where were the unidentified miners buried? Thomas had Baptist connections, but I don't actually know where the family worshipped at that time. ============= Dear Jen, I remember some years ago seeing lots of graves of the tragic victims of the Universal Colliery disaster at Penyrheol Cemetery on the B4263, about one mile southeast of Abertridwr (grid reference ST141881). I quote from the HistoryNet.com website's account: http://www.historynet.com/the-senghenydd-explosion-in-the-valley-of-the-shadow.htm/2 --------- There was no money in the Aber Valley, and no burial ground in its shallow soil. Coffins were hand carried by their comrades more than four miles up the mountain above Abertridwr to the churchyard of Eglwysilan. Six surviving miners bore each body, while six filed behind in relief. The graveyard could not contain them all, and another ground was opened in Penyrheol on the outskirts of Caerphilly. They lie in both cemeteries, row on row. --------- Kind regards, John -------------- John Ball Brecon, Mid Wales, UK E-mail: john@jlb2011.co.uk Website: http:/www.jlb2011.co.uk/

Dear List, Hind sight is 20/20 -- Should you photo copy before any donations?? However, I'm sure like Wendy, you would like to think your donation would be in good hands for the Local people of Barry or any other town, city or village. I don't know, maybe someone can shed some light on this?? If you donate to the National Library of Wales -- eventually it is documented. Is this the best avenue? Or Local -- In Wendy's case, I'm sure like many more over all the UK. Papers held, not documented and gathering dust, who knows where they have been sent. I am sort of in the same situation. My Dad, a local Historian. Collection is huge!!! Books, photos etc. I have told my Mum, not to let anyone in the house, do not give anything away. If my Dad has made provisions in his will, so be it. If not, and he goes before my Mum. My interest is in the well being of my Mum. It could be the case of bringing it all back to Australia. None of my sibling's including my Mum have no interest. However, I can't keep my Dad's work in Australia! So sell, sell, for the best price! If the tables are turned (this is a horrid thing to talk about) my Dad is the last -- it could end up the same scenario? Or a complete collection to the NLW???? for a price. I would have no control on what my siblings thought's or situation would be. I just hope Dad has made provisions. When the time comes, I just hope I do the right thing by all concerned. But as you say what happened to it all, is there anyone from Axis that can put light on the subject??. Barry and the Vale have been screaming out for years for some sort of museum. But for some unknown reasons of their own,the councils ( both ) have not listened. The area is so rich in history it's sad to see it being ignored. I still fee quite upset about this, as the items included a couple of things Mum had kept since girlhood, and a list of names from a collection fund on behalf of soldiers WW2, which my gt. aunt had been connected with..At the time I thought I was 'doing the right thing'by donating them, and I hope that AXIS might be able to retrieve them, along with the rest of the collection. WESTERN MAIL FRIDAY DECEMBER 10. 1926. No. 318. CARDIFF MINISTER'S 80th BIRTHDAY. The Rev. William HARRIES, of Clare-street, Cardiff, celebrates his eightieth birthday this week. Born at Llandeloy, Pembrokeshire, he was trained for the Baptist ministry at Haverfordwest College, and held pastrorates at Marloes and Sandy Hill, Saundersfoot, Maesteg, and Cardiff, and for the past nineteen years has been the Nonconformist chaplain at the City and Ely Lodges. He was also for many years the financial secretary of the Baptist College. Mr. HARRIES is hale and hearty, attends to his duties as well as those of the chaplaincy at the Whitchurch Mental Hospital. LORRY OVER BRINK OF MOUNTAIN. While travelling in a motor-lorry over the Black Mountain from Brynamman to Llangaddock, Mr. Marshall MORRIS, of Penybank, Ammanford, met with an alarming accident. He was accompanied by his man, Owen REES, and, after they had passed a hair-pin bend and were going down the road on the Gwynfi side, the vehicle dashed over the brink and down the steep mountainside for a distance of 30 to 40 yards, where it still remains. Both men were able to jump clear and escaped injury, and the lorry was not damaged. WANTED, strong, willing Girl, Farmhouse; able to milk.- JENKINS, Talyfan, Ystradowen, Cowbridge. Mrs. D. Without calling on the defence, the Cardiff magistrates on Thursday dismissed a charge against Henry FARMER, traveller, Cardiff, of obtaining by false pretences a motor-car, valued at £160, the property of the A. T. MORSE Automobile Company (Limited), Charles-street, Cardiff, with the intent to defraud. Mr. Charles HARDWICKE prosecuted, and Mr. Harold LLOYD appeared for the defence. Arthur Thomas MORSE, 35, Stacey-road, Cardiff, managing director of Morse's Automobile Company, told the court that FARMER showed him a business card of the Wholesale Fittings Company (Limited), Bristol, and ordered a two-seater on behalf of his company. He was told that the car would be released when the cheque was received, but he was lent a car in the meantime. Some days later FARMER produced a letter, which he doubled up, and the witness read a sentence which ran "Regarding the car, there will probably be a dely of a day or two before the cheque is forwarded." The letter convinced witness, and he made out a receiving paper for the car, which FARMER signed on behalf of the Wholesale Fittings Company, and took the car away. As the cheque did not arrive witness wrote to the Wholesale Fittings Company, and, later, saw the managing director when as a result of what he said, a warrant was applied for. The case was dismissed as stated. TAKEN FROM A PAGE ADVERTISING PENARTH SHOPPING CENTRES. Your Christmas Turkey- W. H. HILL, Poultry Dealer-17, Windsor Rd., Penarth. "The Royal Pharmacy"- HENRY A. You might mean 'Capel-Y-Porth' which was situ on Porth Street, Porth. The chapel, Welsh Independent/Congregational, was located next to the Police Sation. It was demolished many years ago and there is now just a empty space. Take a look at my website www.pillars-of-faith.com and you will see a photograph of the chapel as it was in its prime. As Jill states, there are other chapels in Porth and most of them still stand today in one form or another. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Evelyn Clarke" <evelynclarke361@btinternet.com> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2011 5:51 PM Subject: [GLA] Porth Chapel, Rhondda > Hello > > Does anybody have a picture of this Chapel and is it still a place of > worship - I visited Porth recently but couldnt find it ! > > Many thanks > > Evelyn > -- > > To send to the list send to glamorgan@rootsweb.com > GLAMORGAN Family History Mailing List archives etc. are at > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/WLS/GLAMORGAN.html > - > A large amount of information, and a wide variety of useful links, may be > found at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/ > > - > The South/West Wales Lookup Exchange and Gareth's Help Pages > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~walesle/wal/AW.html and > http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > GLAMORGAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
Hi Evelyn, I presume that you have a document or someone has told you that they married or etc., at Porth Chapel? This is most probably Cymmer Chapel, Porth. Strangely I have not added this chapel to my Welsh Chapels website, but I would think that this is the chapel you mean. MASONIC TRIBUTE.-Gift To Ex-Alderman J. MORGAN At Merthyr. Ex-Alderman John MORGAN was honoured at the Masonic Temple, Merthyr, on Thursday with the gift of a portrait in oils of himself from the Fforest Lodge (Treharris) of Freemasons, for whom he has acted as secretary during the past fourteen years. The painting, which his from the brush of the well-known Welsh artist, Mr. Carey MORRIS, was presented ex-Alderman MORGAN by Mr. D. J. JONES, P.A.G.D.C. (Deputy-Provincial Grand Master), to mark the recipient's attainment of the distinction of Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies of the United Grand Lodge of England. Gifts of two replica's of his portrait were made by ex-Alderman MORGAN for display at Merthyr and Treharris Masonic Temples. Ex-Alderman JOHN MORGAN holds a unique Masonic record. Initiated in the Loyal Cambrian Lodge by the late Col. D. R. LEWIS in 1890, he was installed Worshipful Master in 1900. Since then he has held 22 principal chairs. He is the founder of 25 lodges and a member of over 50. He has received the Ancient and Accepted Rite (33 degrees) and the ninth degree of the Societas Rosicruciana. In the Supreme Grand Chapter of Holy Royal Arch Masons he holds the brevet rank of Past Grand Standard Bearer, and the distinction of Past Grand Deacon in the Grand Lodge of Mark Masons of England and Wales. He is also a patron of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution and of the Masonic Benevolent Fund of the Eastern Division of South Wales, and a vice-patron of the Masonic institutions for boys and girls. Ex-Alderman MORGAN became a joining member of the Fforest Lodge in 1909, and after passing through the offices of Director of Ceremonies and Senior Warden, was installed Worshipful Master for 1912-13. The following year he deputised for his successor Col. C. RICHARDSON-WHITE, D.S.O., who had meanwhile embarked on war service. He further took over the lodge secretaryship. Mr. John S. STANFIELD, S.W., was installed Worshipful Master at Thursday's function in succession to Mr. Sydney G. COLLIS. KILLED BY GRAB.-Fatal Accident In Fog At Newport. A verdict of "Accidental death" was recorded at an inquest at Newport on John William SELF (53), 56, Cyril-street, Newport, coal plant foreman, employed at the Newport Power Station, who was killed when struck by a grab on Tuesday. Mr. A. FOTHERINGHAM was present as H.M. Inspector of Factories: Mr. W. G. MENHENNICK (from the office of Mr. Thomas JOHN, Cardiff) represented the corporation, and Mr. H. NEWMAN, Blaenavon (National Union of Enginemen, Firemen,&c.) was for the relatives. Dr. John Francis NICHOLSON stated that the cause of death was a rupture of the heart. Henry CARDELL, Dolphin-street, Newport, crane-driver, said that early on Tuesday morning fog greatly interfered with vision. SELF apparently put out his hand to steady the grab, which appeared to strike him in the chest, and he was knocked against a wall. Stephen George JAMES, leading stoker, stated that the grab came out of the ashpit with a big swing, and its movement towards the power house wall must have been totally unexpected by SELF. John Patrick.
The 'Cambrian' of 19th October 1860 contains several items from the 'Glamorgan Sessions' which seem to have taken place sometimes in Cardiff, sometimes in Swansea. Only items in Glamorgan Assizes referring toe West Glamorgan are normally extracted to the Index, but it is possible that there is an account in the 'Cambrian' of any interesting cases from Cardiff, Merthyr etc which were tried there. However it appears that the April and October Quarter Sessions were held in Swansea in 1860, January and July presumably being in Cardiff, and the October sessions started on 16th October. If I can I will have a look at the court report on 19th October 1860 and the following week to see if it is mentioned. My guess is that the justices concluded that the case against her was flawed or fabricated, and not only discharged her but also wanted the fact of her discharge made public. Magistrates discharged prisoners if their accusers failed to appear, or if they judged that the case should not have been brought, as far as I can tell. A search of the 'Cambrian' on Discharged Proclamation, all words yields 16 examples, from 1823 to 1841, all, as far as I can tell, at County Sessions or Assizes, rather than lower courts, and several where theft was alleged.
