WESTERN MAIL MONDAY DECEMBER 13. 1926. No. 326. GASSED AT SWANSEA.-'Bus Repairers Who Slept Near The Engine. A remarkable occurrence is reported from Fforestfach, Swansea, two unconscious men being left for some hours in a garage in the belief that they were sleeping. The two men, Brinley WILLIAMS, the garage proprietor, of Myddian Villa, and James MORRIS, of Heathfield-terrace, collier, were engaged during Friday night in repairing a 'bus owned by Messrs. LEWIS Bros., Pontardulais, and when the 'bus driver called for the vehicle on Saturday morning he found the two men lying down in the shed. It was first beleived they were asleep, but they were found to be unconscious, and they were sent to the Swansea Hospital, where they were detained in a serious condition. It is beleived that the men inhaled the gas from the engine of the 'bus. HAPPY COURT ENDING.-Leniency In 44 Talywain Strike Charges. The Pontypool Bench, called upon on Saturday to adjudicate in 44 charges from the Talywain district arising out of the coal strike incidents, decided merely to bind the defendants over, the Chairman (Col. H. D. GRIFFITHS) saying the magistrates did not wish to stir up any more dissension. Mr. T. W. GRIFFITHS (Messrs. LYNE and Co., Newport) appeared for the prosecution and Mr. J. EDWARDS (Newport) for the defence. The case of alleged threats against George EDWARDS, miner, of Abersychan, who is at present serving a term of imprisonment for riot, was withdrawn. Five of the defendant's who had been bound over for intimidation were further charged with damaging windows in Cwmavon and Blaenavon. Up till about five years ago, when they retired, Mr. and Mrs. HOWELLS owned and occupied Llandre, one of the most desirable farms in the parish, and which had been held by Mrs. HOWELLS'S family for well over a century. A woman of exceptional charm of manner and charitable to a fault. Mrs. HOWELLS had spent her life in the village, and memories of her kindly, amiable spirit will long be cherished, especially by the poor of the locality. She was an active and zealous member of Bethel Baptist Church. Her husband who for many years served on the Carmarthen Board of Guardians and Rural District Council survives. FUNERAL OF MRS. M. Hello, David, this is quite a coincidence. My 3rd great grandmother, Margaret (Watkins) FRANCIS, born about 1793 in Glamorgan, Wales, died 23 August 1848. Her death record showed the place of death as (what I interpreted as) Pontygyllan Frengig, Eglwysilan. She was the wife of Richard FRANCIS, aka FRANK. They were living on a farm at Wenallt Uchaf in what is now Whitchurch. I was unable to find anyone who recognized Pontygyllan Frengig several years ago when I obtained the death certificate. This snippet may be of general interest as it, unusually, comments openly about the Vicar's financial hardship - seemingly caused by receiving only a small portion of the commuted tithe charge. The remaining 3/4 of the tithe goes to the prebend - named as the Collegiate Church at Brecknock * "........There is but one Service in this Church on the Sunday. The Duty is performed alternately morning and afternoon. In order that the Church might become more efficient in this parish there ought to be two services on each Sunday, but owing to the smallness of the living (the Vicar receiving only 1/4 of the rent charge paid in lieu of tithe) the endowment as above stated [tithe £92; glebe £3, fees £1, easter offerings £1] is insufficient for the maintenance of the clergyman and his family - consequently he is obliged to take the duty of another Parish." Of all the comments I've now seen in this my current Genuki project this one below from RAD is worthy of sharing for its extraordinary, and unusual, length and the detail in it ! * "The Sunday School has been discontinued for some time back, and the weekly Charity School transferred to another parish. There is however a Charity School at Weithel, Old Radnor, to which Children are admissable from this Parish. The Church was rebuilt on the Ancient Site in the year 1847 and 8 with all the available materials of the Old Church - and consequently not deemed necessary to to be reconsecrated - a the Cost of £450; of which £150 was by 'Parochial Rate', and the residue by 'Private Subscription'. It is situated near the lower Extremity of the Township of Llanfihangel in a thinly populated Locality, with a large Tract of Hill Land lying between it and the upper Portion of the Township and a still larger between it and the Lower Division of the Parish, comprising the Township of Trewerne and part of Harpton which circumstance satisfactorily accounts for the smallness of the Congregation, as the Inhabitants usually attend the adjoining Churches of Llandegley, Gladestry, New or Old Radnor, all being much more convenient. At the extreme Western Boundary of the Parish abt. 3 miles from the Church, near Llandegley, a Dissenting Chapel has been erected, on Land given by the Inhabitants of Llandegley for the accommodation of the Inhabitants of that Parish and to which some of my Parishioners resident near the St. occasionally resort. But beg to observe that all my Parishioners are Church-going People, excepting one Farmer and his Household, resident on the border of Glascombe" (Llanfihangel-Nantmellan, RAD) Gareth Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html Cwmgors/Waun http://www.tytwp.plus.com/Waun/Waun.html
Hello Listers.. All this talk of the Parish Church in Ton Pentre has brought back so many memories of my earlier days. I was baptised in the church in 1935 and my family were regular worshippers there for years. I sang in the choir until about 11/12 years and the services were all in Welsh. I was so sad to see how it was demolished and all the mess and rubble in the churchyard. A memorial to my Gt Gd mother seems to have been lost in the demolition, but today it has all been rebuilt and is once again a living church to the Glory of God.
