    3. Do not assume that all ages on marriage certificates are accurate. Of there was a disparity in ages, the older partner may well have knocked a few years off age, and, especially if not marrying with family witnesses, ladies below the age of 21 may have added a few years. 2. Diane and Brian
    3. Hi List. I have been catching up on the last week or so of e.mails. The one from Edward Llwellyn-Jones caught my eye. I have Alice Butcher died aged six, with no death certificate at Bridgend Office or the G.R.O. She is the first name on the family gravestone in the Nebo Chapel in Cefn Cribwr, Glamorganshire. Her parents were Thomas Butcher and Sarah Haines, both of Wiltshire. They married in Glamorgan in 1852, one month before Alice died. Thomas and Sarah knew each other in Wiltshire as they both lived as children in the same house. Thomas is on the 1851 census in Cefn. There is no sign of Sarah or Alice. There is also no birth certificate for Alice anywhere, so far. I do not hold out much hope of finding any more information. Brian

    3. WESTERN MAIL WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 15. 1926.  No. 336. INSURED MAN'S DEATH-Mountain Ash Sister Wins Court Action.   Judge Rowland ROWLANDS resumed the hearing at Mountain Ash County-court on Tuesday of a claim brought by Mrs. Mary Ann OWEN, of Mountain Ash, against the Scottish Legal Assurance Company for a sum of £32 on a policy in respect of the life of her brother. Thomas LEWIS, who had seen service in the Great War.    Mr. A. J. WILLIAMS, Pontypridd, appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. D. HOPKINS (instructed by Mr. J. W. LEWIS, Merthyr) represented the defendants.   It was contended for the defence that the insured man was not in good health when the proposal form was filled in and that an "untrue representation" had been made. The defence alleged that the man had suffered from chronic bronchial catarrh.   In giving judgment for the plaintiff for the amount of the claim, his Honour pointed out that the defence had not satisfied him that LEWIS was not in good health in the ordinary sense of the term. He had to judge people by the ordinary standards of life and not according to the "standards of good health" set by science or by doctors in an abstract way. ROMANCE IN A NEWPORT SCHOOL.   Romance in a Newport school was disclosed at a meeting of the local secondary education committee, when the resignation of Miss Ethel BUCKINGHAM, B.A., and Mr. T. E. J. 3. Hello Aidan Perhaps the answer lies not with the Rev William Williams but rather the pressures placed upon him, either by the community or to someone he owed his living to. My gran used to tell me of two spinsters who ruled the little village she lived in with a rod of iron. Ensuring that the sabbath was observed. Gareth Because not all clerical minds will ever think in exactly the same way - either then or today! :-) I had a quick look to try to ascertain the background of the clergyman in question (Rev William Williams, Rector of Llanddyvnan with Llanfair-mathafarn-eithaf from 1844 onwards), but couldn't find much - Crockford 1865 suggests that he wasn't a graduate of any particular university, nor are any previous parishes mentioned. 3. I've extracted a lot of entries from this Religious Census by now, all over Wales, but this one in AGY is the first I've seen where the clergyman has openly stated his objection to counting the congregation on the Sabbath. There have been other instances where attendance figures have been omitted from the returns - but without comment. I must confess to not knowing what this objection might have been based on given that the vast majority of churches have indeed provided the numbers. * Llanfair-mathafarn-eithaf Parish Church (Diocese of Bangor) Attendance - (average) morning 90, afternoon 150 "I give the general estimated average rather than be a party to have the congregation counted on the Sabbath" W Williams, Rector Gareth Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html Cwmgors/Waun http://www.tytwp.plus.com/Waun/Waun.html

    3. Hi Margaret, Any details of his christian names and age ? The Newcastle in Wales is called Newcastle Emlyn If you go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp Type in word or phrase " Macpherson" in the department series code type in BT372 the result gives you the dates and places of birth of all Macpeherson born from 1910 who were mariner/seafarers. If he is amongst the list, you maybe lucky and be able to get a copy of his identity card. I say lucky as not all the seamans pouches under BT372 have any surviving records. If he was born before 1910 suggest you contact Southampton Archives who have seamans cards for persons born around the late 1800's and who were at sea around the early 1918 to 1941. http://www.southampton.gov.uk/s-leisure/artsheritage/history/maritimehistory/centralindex.aspx Regards Bryan www.swanseamariners.org.uk

    3. Hello Listers, A few years ago I had a lot of help from this list, and so I decided to ask for assistance once more. I am doing this on behalf of a cousin in Canada who is looking for a relative who has not been mentioned in Canadian records since 1910. However, according to his sister's Obituary he was still alive in the 1940s and living in "South Wales". He was not mentioned in the Obituary of another relative who died in the 1950s. He was a seafaring gentleman called M(a)CPHERSON and my cousin tells me he has located 4 "possibles", but he does not recognised the districts concerned. They are: Henley; Marylebone; Newcastle T. and Whitehaven. I know of all of these in England, but I believe that there are also places called Newcastle in Wales. I should be very grateful if someone could tell me about them, and suggest how I might proceed. Thank you. Best wishes to all, Margaret Buchanan Aberdeen, Scotland.
