    3. Thank you, Brian - every snippet is of interest. My question arose from a search on my grandfather's name (James Ingram Rees) which came up with this in the London Gazette: The -CATHAYS CINEMA COMPANY Limited. The Companies Act, 1948. Special Resolution passed the 10th day of February, 1949. AT an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Members of the above Company, duly convened and held at the registered office, 23, St. Mary Street, Cardiff, on the 10th day of February, 1949, the following Special Resolution was -duly passed:— "It is resolved that the Cathays Cinema Company Limited shall be put into voluntary liquidation and that Mr. Ronald Prince, Incorporated Accountant, of 23, St. Mary Street, Cardiff, shall be appointed . Liquidator." (278) J. INGRAM REES. Chairman. 1. [GLA] Wellington Street?
    2. robert williams
    3. Robert.I expect that the 1891 census would put Wellington Street in Riverside then. Today it would be listed in Canton. But in about 1985 the whole area became in Riverside Ward from Tudor Street in the South right up to Western Avenue in the north. So all the street's and road's alongside Pontcanna Fields are Not in Pontcanna, but in Riverside. But we all know that today,Houses in that area have their prices increased by saying that they ARE in Pontcanna. Riverside Ward Today is all that area of land to the East of Leckwith Road/Llandaff Road's. On the West of those two roads lies Canton Ward. Canton Ward goes to the River Ely in the South to Pencisely Road in the North. In the East it lies at Those two roads mentioned above,Leckwith/Llandaff Roads,to The "Magic Roundabout"at the junction of Cowbridge Road East/West, & Western Avenue. Has anyone done the SAVAGE lineage yet? I have some in Bristol. Cheers,Graham. From:- Graham WILLIAMS,of Canton,Cardiff. Glamorgan F.H.S;#551.

    3. Hi You're quite right. Edmund (or Edward) Savage as he preferred to call himself was the son of Timothy Savage and Ellen Flinn. In 1851 I agree that the name looks like Sugrue or similar, but I think this is them. It took me a while to find it. I use FindmyPast and it was transcribed as 'Savyner'. They are in Mellon St. (In the book Legacy - Vol 6, which documents Edward's life this is given as William St), In 1861 they are in 12 Granville St, Newport, and in 1871 in Canal Parade (no 18 - schedule 36). Father Timothy was killed in 1864 in a dockside accident, and Ellen is described as Widow Savage. In the book Legacy - vol 6, the author Kris Wheatley has followed this family all their births marriages and deaths, and there was never any suggestion that it was Sugrue. His army records give his next of kin as his brother Patrick (b 1864) , and that he married Johanna McCarthy in 1883 - his first wife (she's buried with). Hope this helps John From: K Mc [mailto:cardiff2cork@hotmail.com] Sent: 23 May 2011 07:20 To: john.farnhill@ntlworld.com Subject: RE: [GLA] Friends of Cathays Cemetery - Unveiling memorial to Rorke's Drift defenfer - 4th June Hello All, Anything with an Irish connection grabs my attention. I'm not 100% on this but I did see an Edward Savage in Newport 1861 ( son of Timothy Savage and probably Ellen Flynn) I cant find them in 1871 but in 1851 something comes up which is interesting. I have a Gx1 Grandmother from Co Meath and I know Savage isn't a name that crops up too often in this part of Ireland Co's Cork & Kerry etc where most came from that appear along the South Wales coast line. In 1861 I see a Timothy Surgrue and Ellen in St Woolo's Newport and it's a shot in the dark was the name changed at some stage? It's recorded as Sayan / Savage but it's definitely Surgrue. Believe me if you were in South Co Kerry now and asked a person their surname (Surgrue) you'd be lost.........down there as i west Cork the S can be prounounced as "Sh". 3. Sorry, John, I can't be there on 4 June. Interesting to find Edward on the 1891 census, living at 137 Wellington Street (more Canton than Riverside, surely?), with his wife, five children and no less than four boarders! Wellington Street has been completely redeveloped at various times in the last 100 years but if the original property was anything like those typical for the area it does make you wonder how they all fitted in! Robert -----Original Message----- From: glamorgan-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:glamorgan-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Farnhill Following his discharge, Edward married, settled in Riverside, Cardiff, and took a job as a council worker. Sadly, Edward died in 1893, aged only 32.

    3. Hi Those of you within striking distance of Cardiff may be interested in an event that we'll be holding at 2pm on 4th June to commemorate Edmund (Edward) Savage, a survivor of the Battle of Rorke's Drift, immortalised in the film Zulu. In co-operation with the Royal Welsh Regiment, Firing Line (Cardiff Castle Military Museum) and Mossfords, we'll be unveiling a memorial on his previously unmarked grave. Born in Newport, Edward joined the army in 1877 aged eighteen and sailed the following year to South Africa, where he saw action before being sent to Rorke's Drift. When the battle started, Edward was in the camp hospital suffering from an injured knee. According to contemporary reports, he jumped through the window and 'assisted in the defence, lying on his side and taking aim through an opening in a pile of biscuit boxes' Following his discharge, Edward married, settled in Riverside, Cardiff, and took a job as a council worker. Sadly, Edward died in 1893, aged only 32. In arranging this event, we will be recognising the losses on both sides at Rorke's Drift and are fortunate to have received a message from HRH Prince Shange, a descendant of the Zulu commander, which will be read out at the dedication. We'll be joined by representatives from the Military Museums in Cardiff and Brecon, the Royal Welsh, and members of a 'Living History' group (period uniform). The event starts at 2pm by the Chapels in Fairoak Road. Regards John Farnhill
