    1. [GLA] Burial of cholera victims
    2. Pamela Marsden
    3. Hello Swansea Valley history experts! A family member died of cholera aged 57 in 1866. She died in Trebanos where her parents lived (but not in their house) and was buried the following day at Llangiwg. It has taken me a while to sort this out because she lived in Ystradgynlais from at least 1841 to 1861, the Llangiwg register transcription describes her as from Ystalyfera, her husband was buried at Ystradgynlais parish church in 1856 and the family had very strong connections with Alltwen chapel with many burials there. I know there was a cholera outbreak in Ystalyfera in 1866. My question is whether there were designated burial grounds for cholera victims and whether Llangiwg was one such place. Pam Marsden

    3. I am seeking a local person to help me by taking a few gravestone photos at the Treorchy Cemetery. Graves are Plot F 206 for William Thomas and his wife, Jane Mary, and Plot N 690 for Gabriel T. Drakes and his wife, Eluned. They can be e-mailed to me at katiet223@yahoo.com I also have a question. When I input Treherbert, two counties are shown Glanmorganshire and Rhondda Cynon Taff. If the county designation changed, when (what year) did it do so? Thanks, Katie, NY, USA

    1. [GLA] Swansea marriages transcriptions 1884-1900
    2. Barry Johnson
    3. I've checked all counties and districts but haven't been able to find a marriage for my g.grandparents David John DAVIES, born in Swansea c.1852, and Mary JEWELL, born in Clovelly in 1854, but both living unmarried in Swansea in 1881. Thankfully, there were only three possible David John DAVIESes born in Swansea between 1850 and 1859 (as six others have been eliminated through death or definite marriages to other women). Between 1872 and 1882 there were no David John DAVIES marriages in Swansea, but from 1884 to 1900 there were fifteen Swansea marriages involving that name. Although it wouldn't give me a cast-iron identification, it would be interesting and possibly useful if I could eliminate two of the three candidates I'd found on the 1861 census, and to do that I need to establish the names and occupations of the fathers of those fifteen bridegrooms. Of course, I know I won't be able to find a DAVIES/JEWELL marriage, as I've checked the parish registers for 1881-92 at the Swansea RO. (Their children were born in 1882, 1887 and 1890, and the family had moved to Milford Haven by 1892.) The LDS resource centre in Rhiwbina is the closest and most convenient place for a visit, and I'd be grateful if anyone could confirm that the centre has full transcripts of all Swansea parish marriages for 1884-1900. Of course, I understand that there may well be several marriages which were held in the Register Office, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Desperate problems call for desperate measures! 3. To give you an example of what is offered as opposed to the CWGC info. The CWGC has a Bart Attridge of the Irish Guards K.I.A. 1916 with not not much else. In the book it states Bart Attridge as above born Cork City resided in Castletownshend, Co Cork enlisted in Bargoed. That little bit of info might make the difference to someone. After all....why enlist in Bargoed? Regards, Kevin.

    3. You can search the Soldiers Who Died In The Great War on Ancestry and FMP using the place of enlistment and place of birth though one of the sites has these the wrong way around. This site also allows keyword searches of the CWGC data though often WWI casualties did not have details of place of birth, next of kin etc shown. http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search1421.php To complicate matters I have sometimes come across Irish casualties who had served under an alias.
