I would be grateful if someone could help me with a brick wall I have so far been unable to resolve. My great grandfather Phillip Davies lived with widow Jane Rosser (nee James) after the death of her husband David Rosser and they produced three Davies children. Phillip died in Jan 1890 aged 39 and I found five possibles born in the 1850's. I eliminated two as they appear in the 1891 census but I could not go any further. I now know that he was buried in St. John the Baptist Church in Dowlais on 7th January 1890 and was taken there from The Square, Rhymney where I know that he died. In the 1871 and 1881 Census there is a single Phillip Davies living with his mother in Well Street, Dowlais and if it can be confirmed St John the Baptist Church is near Well Street then I could reasonably assume that he is my great grandfather. Len Davies Sydney, Australia
Len, If you go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk and enter the coordinates 306524 207912 in to the search box that brings up a map of the town of Dowlais. Select the 1900 1:2500 map and St John's Church is clearly shown. A short distance south, one or two streets you will see Well Street. Trust this helps. It is no absolute proof since the Churchyard could be the common burial ground for the whole area. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Len Davies" <jpvldav@hotmail.com> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2011 2:59 AM Subject: [GLA] help with Dowlais map > > I would be grateful if someone could help me with a brick wall I have so > far been unable to resolve. > > My great grandfather Phillip Davies lived with widow Jane Rosser (nee > James) after the death of her husband David Rosser and they produced three > Davies children. Hi Jill, I opened this site and searched every county to try and find the death/burial of my g/g/grandfather Martin HOOLEY/Hooly/Houly or variants but still have not found him. He is shown as deceased on the marriage certificate of my g/grandfather in 1857. I have found him in Cheshire Census in 1841 aged 30 and working as a mason Journeyman. He was born in Ireland. I am trying to get his death certificate but cannot find out anything about him. Can you help...trying for 20 or more years to find some trace of him. I had to smile at the implication that the Calvinistic Methodists pulled a fast one in the Census attendance figures 'game' in this AGY parish ! Suggests there was some sort of unwritten agreement not to publicise the census - but, I'm sure it was a quite innocent action on their part:-) * Llangeinwen Parish Church (Diocese of Bangor) Repaired and enlarged in 1839 Attendance - morning 60, afternoon 31 (average - morning 120/130, afternoon 40) "The number of persons who attended the Services in the Church on the 30th March 1851 was about one half the usual congregation and this is to be accounted for in this way. Many of the Parishioners are in the habit of attending both the Meeting houses and Church, but on this occasion public notice of the Census was given in the Chapels of the Calvinistic Methodists (who are by far the most numerous body of dissenters in this neighbourhood" W Williams, Rector Gareth Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html Cwmgors/Waun http://www.tytwp.plus.com/Waun/Waun.html

Hi I'm doing some research for my daughter in law, one of her ancestors was a Bateman Jones born around the Kenfig Hill area c 1848 . I have some details of him taken from the censuses from 1881 onwards and his marriage record to an Anne Jones in 1868 in Bridgend . Despite browsing throgh all the other censuses previous to 1881 ,I just can't find him .On the 1881 census he's listed as Beatman but still no joy using this name and other variants of Bateman . Neither can I find a record of his birth. Before I go down the line of purchasing a marriage certificate for him ,I wondered if some kind person would have any records at their disposal that would show who his parents were etc. Thanks regards, Buddug Hollett
RE: Message 5: Hi Evelyn, Thanks for responding. William Thomas died Oct. 20, 1955 and his wife, Jane Mary on Aug. 4, 1946. Their son-in-law, Gabriel T. Drakes died Oct. 17, 1975 and his wife, Eluned in 1991. I expect they all are located in the newer section of the cemetery. There is no indication on any of their interment records whether or not a headstone was placed. I guess we won't know until someone goes and looks, an effort I would really appreciate. Take care now...Katie --- On Sat, 5/28/11, glamorgan-request@rootsweb.com <glamorgan-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > From: glamorgan-request@rootsweb.com <glamorgan-request@rootsweb.com> > Subject: GLAMORGAN Digest, Vol 6, Issue 223 > To: glamorgan@rootsweb.com > Date: Saturday, May 28, 2011, 7:00 AM > > > To request change of Digest Format contact GLAMORGAN-admin@rootsweb.com > and be patient. Can I just say, I never said it was simple, but if you get the internment record you can normally (with a little bit of knowledge) discover whether or not you will find a headstone on the grave ...... basically I have found if it says it is a common grave it meant there was no headstone on it, but you could still find where the person was buried.... but the grave might not just have your ancestors in it .... haha Im starting to wish I hadnt answered the request now .... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gareth Morgan" <morgangareth36@yahoo.co.uk> To: "Glam" <glamorgan-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 29, 2011 12:55 AM Subject: Re: [GLA] Request > Hello David > > It all depends on who you talk to when you visit.
