Even though Llangiwg is less than 30 miles by road from Merthyr Tydfil, these two places were a world apart to the people who lived there. Llangiwg is in the Swansea Valley, while Merthyr Tydfil is in the Taff Valley. Between these two valleys there are five other South Wales valleys. >From Llangiwg in the west to Merthyr Tydfil in the east these are: the Dulais Valley, the Neath Valley, the Rhondda Fawr Valley, the Rhondda Fach Valley, and the Cynon Valley. So one could claim that Llangiwg is five valleys away from Merthyr. Dianne, By Australia standards, Llanguick (Llangiwg) is near Merthyr. By welsh Valley standards, it is not particularly near. Merthyr I'm sure you have found on modern maps. Llangiwg is around the area of Pontardawe and Ystalyfera in the Swansea and Amman valleys. Google says Pontardawe to Merthy is 27.9 miles by modern roads. Plenty on Llangiwg on Gareth Hick's web site. http://www.tytwp.plus.com/Waun/Waun.html#top2 Dai On 07/06/2011 05:28, Dianne wrote: > I know my ancestors came from the Glamorgan area and it gets confusing at times can anyone tell me where abouts LLANGUICK GLAMORGAN is it near MERTHYR .My gggrandfatrher William Lewis census record for1841 says Glamorgan > 1861 census says Merthyr Glamorgan Wales > his sister Elizabeth , brother John 1851 census says LLANGUICK . > > Dianne > Aussie
The first step would be to find Mary Kellard's husband's name (assuming she was married) and her marriage record to find out her maiden name as you would need to be looking under that name. Also look at other census - she may have put something more helpful than Ireland on those and in earlier ones be living with her husband. Perhaps looking for the birth of Honora might be a way as well. www.familysearch.org might have it in their Irish databases of civil registration or baptisms marriages etc. Regards Lyn In Oz. > -----Original Message----- > From: glamorgan-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:glamorgan-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Deric John > Sent: Tuesday, 7 June 2011 5:04 AM > To: glamorgan@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GLA] Kellard in Ireland > > I need some help and advice please. > The 1881 census has my g. grandmother Mary Kellard, age 44, > and her daughter Honora Kellard, age 22 born in Ireland. Hi Dianne I think the place you are looking for may be Llangiwg http://tinyurl.com/6f6zhpn (for which the Anglicised version is Llanguicke), which is near Pontardawe and almost 30 miles by road from Merthyr Tydfil. Thanks Lyn, Sean and Eliz for your useful suggestions. I looked at the 1911 census (as directed) and saw that Honora was born in Cork in 1859/60. That has narrowed it down - so now I need to visit the NLIreland and also find some birth and marriage certificates etc. I'm very grateful to you for your help. But 1851-1901 censuses sometimes have such details. Second get Mary A Kellard's birth certificate to find her mother's maiden name and her father's name. Kellard isn't a common name in Ireland (or elsewhere) so find where it occurs using Griffith's Valuation and the 1901 Irish census (both available online free). Mary and Honora were born before Irish Civil Registration of births started in 1864. Ultimately, your only likely sources for the precise places of birth are Irish church records. If they were Catholic, most such records are on microfilm at the National Library in Dublin. Hi Jane Many thanks for posting this website. I have an interest in the parish of Lydney, and there appear to be some transcribed PRs here for that parish. However the URL given in your message appears to redirect immediately to a website for Monmouth (http://www.welcometomonmouth.co.uk/). I found it necessary to use the URL http://www.forest-of-dean.net to get to the real Forest of Dean website. Dunno what I am? I suppose I'm like Terry. I'm Wenglish too? How does one find out via DNA what one is? What part of the family tree does one head for? I was born in Riverside Cardiff. My Mother was born in Canton,Cardiff. My Father was born in Cardiff Docks. 3 of my 4 Grand-parents were born in Wales. The other one was born in Birmingham. of my 8 great, grandparents, one was born in Swansea. His wife was born in Cardiff Docks. Another 2 were born in Milford Haven. Another in Cariff, one in Mumbles. another in Bristol, whilst his wife was born in Warwick Town. Of the 16 club,Its a mixture of English and Welsh, with one Scottish and a few Irish thrown in for good measure. So as I said,Which part is Tested for DNA;? Cheers Graham. You do understand that the DNA haplotyping is going to eliminate English, Welsh, Cornish, Cumbric, Irish, Scots and leave us with "Briton", and "some Germanic invader" -- mostly r1b's, and the rest mainly I (as in eye.) And, about time, too, I'd say. MEJ in California
It is hard following the Irish connection, your best bet is church records. I have been recommended to ask for a sacramental history (the Catholic church is very wary of genealogical requests) The National library has some good information http://sources.nli.ie/ This site can be useful but it isn't easy to figure where your ancestor was born or married Exploring your Irish family history, step-by-step Follow our guide to researching your Irish family history. Including what to look for and planning your trip. Step one, researching at home http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html I can't get Ireland Genealogy Projects to load, don't know what the problem is. Also it is well worth joining an Ireland list and keep looking for your ancestors in the census and pray they gave a town name, it does happen <G> Good Luck <G> Eliz On Mon, Jun 6, 2011 at 3:03 PM, Deric John <deric@popsjohn.freeserve.co.uk> wrote: > I need some help and advice please. > The 1881 census has my g. grandmother Mary Kellard, age 44, and her daughter Honora Kellard, age 22 born in Ireland. Subject: Cornwall link to Wales Saints day 4th June St Petroc Thought this might be of interest, which was found on another FHS site. Of special interest to those with ancestors from Wales & Cornwall. ' Cornwall's most famous saint and early hunt saboteur. Petroc is said to have been the SON of a WELSH CHIEFTAIN. He studied in Irland before settling in Cornwall in the 4th century. He founded a monastery at what is now called Padstow [ Petroc's Stow ]. About 30 years later he established another monastery at Little Petherick, where he built a mill and a chapel. In his last years he lived as a hermit on Bodmin Moor. He built a cell there for himself by the river and a monastery for twelve monks who followed him. St Petroc died at Treravel while on a journey visiting his other monasteries. He was buried at Padstow which became the centre of his cult. His relics were later moved to Bodmin. In 1177 a disgruntled canon took them off to the abbey of St Mewan in Brittany. Thanks to the intervention of King Henry 11 they were returned to Bodmin amidst great celebrations. This event has been revived as part of the Bodmin Riding and Heritage Festival. The actual reliquary survived the Reformation and the destruction of the shrine. Petroc was greatly revered for centuries thoughout Cornwall and Brittany, [ where he is known as St Perreux]. The saint had a special affinity with wild animals. One of his emblems is a stag - in memory of one he rescued from hunters. According to legend he also once tamed a dragon.
