    3. Good evening, I am new to this list and I am hoping someone can help.In the 1911 census, a great aunt of mine was working as housemaid at the "staff house" of the above address. As there were 8 other women working as bar attendants,I presume it was some sort of hotel/club. I did the Google Street View and it's now called the "River House"...or at least it was when Google filmed it. My question is,can someone tell me what it was called in 1911? Thank you Roy

    3. 'Naturalist' in the 1865 entry was a term used for taxidermist at the time, when having stuffed animals and birds in glass cases was a must for 'sporting' landed gentry. At one time there were a lot of stuffed animals in Cardiff museum. This advert from a contemporary in Swansea conveys the nature of the business: 03 March 1876 T. ANDREWS, NATURALIST, GORSE LN., SWANSEA. STUFFER OF BIRDS, ANIMALS ETC. SKINS MADE INTO RUGS FOR CARRIAGE OR HOUSE.P1 The skills with leather and glues would have been relatively similar to those of a bookbinder. 3. There was an item about him in the 'Cambrian', the Swansea newspaper, in 1855 SPORTS AND RECREATION, ATHLETICS 21 December 1855 SUPERINTENDENT TATE,BERNARD KENE,MARINER ST & WILLIAM GALE THE PEDESTRIAN. And here is another one: SPORTS AND RECREATION, ATHLETICS 07 September 1855 MR GALE OF LONDON,WALKED OVER SEVEN MILES IN UNDER AN HOUR AT NEATH. If someone has access to the 'Western Mail' online via NLW there may be other items, if he was based in Cardiff. If we have the exact date of the 1880 feat in New York that may also be useful to discover other accounts which may have details of his life in Wales. 3. Excellent points Jeff. I didn't know what that 'naturalist' bit in the 1865 directory was. If anyone's interested, I've uploaded a couple of interesting newspaper clippings, a signed taxidermist bill and the directories bits I've found so far here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/85078449@N00/sets/72157626961196456/ Jim On Tue, Jun 14, 2011 at 11:38 AM, Jeff Coleman <Jeff.Coleman@ntlworld.com>wrote: > 'Naturalist' in the 1865 entry was a term used for taxidermist at the time, > when having stuffed animals and birds in glass cases was a must for > 'sporting' landed gentry. 3. It would be very helpful if you could give us some idea of dates you are looking for. 1790s? 1840s? 1950s? Also some idea of any census that this couple appear on. There appears to be a marriage in Narberth registration district of Morris RICHARDS and Mary PHILIPPS in June quarter 1838. This registration district included a number of parishes in the west of Carmarthenshire, as well as many in Pembrokeshire. This couple appear to have been living at Begelly Moor in 1851, in Begelly, Pembrokeshire with numerous children He was from 'Coffick', Carmarthenshire which might well have been Cyffig ( see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Cyffig/index.html ) which was close to the Pembrokeshire border and in Narberth Registration District. People used to driving to Pembrokeshire will recognise that Red Roses in the parish of Cyffig is on the main road from Carmarthen and St Clears towards Tenby and Begelly. She was from Begelly. Begelly was a mining area where the mines seem to have been running down by mid/late 19th century, and a number of people migrated east to mining areas of Glamorgan and East Carmarthenshire. PHILIPPS is a Pembrokeshire spelling adopted by some landowning families, and presumably others. "BEGELLY (BUGELI), a parish, in the union of and hundred of NARBERTH, county of PEMBROKE, SOUTH WALES, 5 miles (S. by E.) from Narberth, on the road to Tenby; containing, with the chapelry of Williamston, which supports its own poor, 1159 inhabitants. The substratum of the soil in this parish is coal, of excellent quality, and in great request for the drying of malt and hops by the proprietors of breweries and distilleries: it is chiefly procured by a company under Sir R.B.P. Philipps, Bart., and J.M. Childe, Esq., who are the chief proprietors of the soil, and receive one-sixth part, as their share of the produce: there are also some smaller proprietors, who exact one-fifth, and even one-fourth, part from those who work only on a limited scale." from http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/Begelly/Begelly1844.html extracted by Gareth Hicks Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "karen" <kmabey@bigpond.net.au> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 14, 2011 5:26 PM Subject: [GLA] FW: marriage help please > Sorry if posted twice. > > > > > > Hi > > Looking for help with a marriage of Morris RICHARDS and Mary COLE please. >>From what I'm told Morris was from Carmarthenshire think he died Narberth > Pembrokeshire. > > Any information will be helpful. > > > > Regards > > Karen. > > -- > > To send to the list send to glamorgan@rootsweb.com > GLAMORGAN Family History Mailing List archives etc. are at > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/WLS/GLAMORGAN.html > - > A large amount of information, and a wide variety of useful links, may be > found at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/ > > - > The South/West Wales Lookup Exchange and Gareth's Help Pages > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~walesle/wal/AW.html and > http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > GLAMORGAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Glebe Street not Globe Street. Not very clear on that page, but very clear on adjacent pages. I don't know of any Globe Street in Penarth, but Glebe Street is still there. You can see it on Google Maps StreetView. It looks as if part of it has been in an urban regeneration area, from the uniformly restored housefronts. Some of the little shops you can imagine having been shops for 130 years or more with a facelift every now and again. Penarth Dock was both larger than most, so more suitable for larger vessels, and also possibly quicker turn-around than Cardiff docks in late 19th century, which could be a reason for him to end up there. However this William GALE was aged 28 in 1871 and his wife, born in New York, aged 27, so not likely to have married in the 1850s! So quite possibly a different couple. 1. [GLA] Fw: William ROGERS: Electoral Rolls from 1861-1864
    2. Jeff Coleman
    3. In 1871 William Rogers age 72 b Broxbourne,Hertfordshire and his wife Ann, 53, b Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire were living at 34a Strand, while at No. 34 was the household of John Crook, carpenter, and also in 34a was the family of John Waterhouse, a Fellmonger and skinner from Lancashire, his wife from Nova Scotia and one son born in Dublin and a new-born daughter. [ Fellmonger's premises were notoriously smelly, so one hopes he just lived there, and didn't work on the premises.] The Strand was not a salubrious quarter of the town where other solicitors or attorneys lived - it was close to the North Dock and contained a large number of public-houses specialising in entertaining seafaring men, and some commercial and industrial premises. This William Rogers does not seem to appear in the 'Cambrian Index', though his namesake, who kept the Waterloo iron foundry, appears several times. There was however, a William Rogers who donated books to the Library of the Royal Institution of South Wales in 1871. http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=29618 is s list of all the electoral rolls surviving, which do not seem to cover the period in question. There are various street directories and trade directories in Swansea Central Library, the Royal Institution of South Wales (Swansea Museum) and in West Glamorgan Archives. If William Rogers was a householder, rather than a lodger, he may well appear in the Rate Books ( for collecting the Poor Rate to sustain the activities of Swansea Board of Guardians) http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=28474 However if he moved from place to place he may be hard to trace, as I think these will be organised in street order. http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=9313 may also be helpful. Your best bet may be to contact West Glamorgan Archives and ask specifically what records for 1861-1864 might exist that might be relevant. 3. Dear All, I sent a query to Swansea record office asking dear Sir/Madam I recently found out that 2 of my great grandparents are buried in Pontrhydyfen , even though they lived at least 20 years in Aberdare. Their funerals were in Aberdare, but the coffins were taken by rail to Port Talbot and then by road to Pontrhydyfen. Their names are Margaret Morgan died 1914 and John Afanydd Morgan died 1936 whose obituary specifically mentions Jerusalem Chapel burial ground for the interrment. My query is are there any burial records held for Jerusalem chapel? Or am I to find the burial ground and do a personal search? their reply was short and sweet Unfortunately we do not hold any burial registers for Jerusalem Calvinistic Chapel, Pontrhydyfen. We only hold some marriage registers for the years, 1965-1991 (D/D CM 9) Does anyone know where these records are? or are they lost? what is the state of the graveyard, is it maintained, and is it open? any help will be gratefully received thank you/diolch yn fawr Gavin Williams

    3. Hello Helen Its down as Lantrissant, they are living at Ynishir in the Rhondda. Eldest daughter Mary is 6, making the nearest wedding date at approximately 1854. In the 1st quarter of 1853 a Maria HILL married a David Davies. Gareth Hi, Does anyone have list of 1851 marriages? I'm looking for the following marriage, somewhere between 1851-1855 and I think maybe Merthyr. David Davies of Pencarreg to Maria ?poss Davies. On 1861 original census, says wife from Lanlassant, and written says Llansaint, Glamorganshire, but I only know of Llantrisant. (llansaint in Carms?) Census was in Merthyr Tydfil, parish Ystradyfodwg. Just wondering if anyone had details of around that time, thanks for looking. Regards Helen

He'd married a rich widow in 1829 and I think her inheritance payrolled his practice. He'd had two clerks at one stage. Then either the money ran out or something happened forcing him to move away and downmarket. > This William Rogers does not seem to appear in the 'Cambrian Index', > though his namesake, who kept the Waterloo iron foundry, appears several > times.
