It has been a while since the last one but I have not been sitting back on my laurels. One of the issues when the the site was archived by the UK Web Archive was that it could not deal with the form-based menu selections on the main content page or the ministers' database page. I have now, hopefully, addressed this (will not know until the next archive run) by redesigning those menus - I think they are now even easier to follow. The following updates are also in place: 1. There are three more chapels, unfortunately with only current photographs a) A Primitive Methodist, Treherbert b) Horeb Welsh Wesleyan, Ystrad and c) Tabernacle Welsh Methodist, Clydach Vale. 2. Membership statistics (on a circuit basis) for the Wesleyan/Methodist denomination. 3. A new section 'Extra Content' for the chapels. There is only a small example of its potential at present - interior views of Horeb, Treorchy and Ebenezer, Tonypandy plus some alternative photographs which also show some of the original chapel buildings - Horeb, Treorchy and Bethania, Llwynypia. I will leave you to find the rest. I will add some more in the next few days. A further update is planned to correct some anomolies with the Wesleyan ministers since I now have some additional information. See you at www.pillars-of-faith.com
I know it's not Welsh or Glam history, but I also know there are several folks here with Irish connections, too. Anyway, it's an interesting article about how archaeologists are piecing together the immigrant experience in the US. Read full article and see small photo here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/06/110624111934.htm Intro: Hidden Lives of Baltimore's Irish Immigrants Unearthed for First Time ScienceDaily (June 25, 2011) — An archaeological team from the University of Maryland is unearthing a unique picture of the Baltimore-area's early Irish immigrants -- of city children taught to read and write at home before widespread public education and child labor laws, as well as insular rural residents who resisted assimilation for one hundred years. There is similar research being done on a Welsh slate community in Delta, Pennsylvania, but when I was there talking to the archaeologists, they weren't so interested in the Welsh, as just seeing what artifacts they could find. You can see the slate workers' cottages they are restoring here: http://deltawelshheritage.com/quarrymens_cottages_coulsontown Mona
David I remembered seeing this family mentioned on the list before Searching the list archives found http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/glamorgan/2009-08/1251379666 which is one of three replies to your previous query sent to the list in August 2009, when you found that Annie was travelling to visit David J. JONES in USA on a shipping list. Alltwen was part of Cilybebyll parish. There are no less than 166 references to Cilybebyll in the Glamorgan list archives, including a different JONES family. Have you looked at the other censuses for this family? Graham There is a web site http://www.traveline-cymru.info/ which allows you to plan your journey anywhere within Wales by bus or train or both. You start off by typing your own postcode and then the postcode of where you want to get to, the day and the time. It looks as if CF64 1TN will make a good postcode to get to the Barrage South Waterbus Stop. There is also a waterbus that goes from near the Senedd (Welsh Assembly Government building) across Cardiff Bay ( the big pond that used to be the tidal estuary of the rivers Taff and Ely) to the stop at Penarth end of the Barrage. If you don't like the smell of diesel engines you might not like travelling on it. There seems to be an 89B bus that goes once every two hours to near the Penarth end of the barrage from the centre of Cardiff. The nearest bus stop seems to be Penarth Portway(E) Jeff Original Message ----- From: "robert williams" <canton_cardiff_wales@yahoo.com> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2011 5:37 PM Subject: [GLA] Flat Holme & C My Thanks to Josephine for the information as to where the Boat Stop is. Can anyone help me please,I have a school report dated 1868, of my great grandfathers, who attended thistleboon acadamy. It is so impressive, both that it is written in script, on vellum, and also for the subjects he studied, together with his grades,I would love to discover more about the acadamy, and any information about him.He is described as “master Horner”, and the report is his mid-term report for that year,I believe his christian name to be Charles, or Henry, or maybe both. Any Help would be Very much appriciated, thanks.....R.E.Evans, e mail: raytherep@hotmail.com

Hi Robert, There's a photograph of the sign for the South Barrage Water Bus Stop plus a map of the location on the following web page: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1585665 It's at the southern end of the Cardiff Bay Barrage near the entrance to Penarth Marina. Thanks to Josephine for the information on the Flatholm trips. I see the boat goes from the South Barrage. Where ever that is? And how does one get to it? Someone else says it goes from Penarth? But where in Penarth? Possibly the Marina? Where's that? I see the cost for the Boat Trip is 50 quid for 2 adults and 2 kids. The South Wales Echo ran a story in todays edition. They were more interested in the New Pub thats opened there. They didn't show where you catch the boat either. Presumably,They expect Visitors to "Swim Over?" I for one wouldn't fancy doing that! Not after a few pints that is! Cheers,Graham. From:- Graham WILLIAMS,of Canton,Cardiff. Glamorgan F.H.S;#551.

Hi Listers, In an off-list message, my attention has been drawn to John H. Brown's book, The Valley of the Shadow An account of Britain's worst mining disaster: the Senghenydd explosion. I felt sure that we must have a copy of this book so searched in the Welsh section of our bookshelves, but could not find it. Then I turned around and there it was behind me with the Bristol books within arm's reach! The book was first published in 1981. Our copy is a second edition, reset with minor corrections, which was published in 2009 by Alun Books, Port Talbot. Looking for where copies of the book can be obtained, I came across the following web page on the Aber Valley Heritage Centre: http://www.thevalleys.co.uk/site/attractions/aber-valley-heritage-centre-p112891 Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah The Glamorganshire Canal www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

Hi Phil and all. I was in Cardiff Library yesterday morning. I spent a few hours looking through the last 2 volumes of "The South Wales Graphic"Magazine's. Thanks for the explanation Bob. That would seem the logical answer to him being a "Boatman". He was also listed as a "Fireman on a Steam Boat"in the 1881 census, when he took his 5 year old daughter,[my great, grandma]Florence Elizabeth Mary BOWEN,[1876-1966]over to Bristol to visit with his Father-in-Law Edward North COLLIN[G]S.[1818-1891] Although Llewellyn just happened to be Enumerated in The Cardiff Census for 1881 too! Cheers and thanks Bob. Graham. From:- Graham WILLIAMS,of Canton,Cardiff. Glamorgan F.H.S;#551.
