The first reference I recall seeing in these Religious census comments to the 5 Mile Act of 1665 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Mile_Act_1665 * Capel Helyg, Independents (Llangybi, CAE) Erected before 1800 Attendance - morning 135, afternoon 140 scholars, evening 200 "The Independents used to worship at this place at the time of the five Mile Act and the congregation was fined twice to fifty pounds and the above sums has been paid by the few poor frend at the place" Thomas Griffith, Minister Gareth Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html Cwmgors/Waun http://www.tytwp.plus.com/Waun/Waun.html
I'm trying to locate my great-grandfather Thomas JONES born 5th March 1870 in Dowlais in the 1871 census. His parents were Thomas JONES and Elizabeth HUGHES (no further info on them yet). I'm looking within Glamorgan because Thomas JONES (b1870) was still resident in Merthyr Tydfil when he married in 1893 (to Agnes JAMES). I can't find the family all together in 1871, but I have found two possibilities of a Thomas JONES with a widowed mother Elizabeth: 1. Thomas Jones aged 1 born Dowlais living with great grandparents William and Jane Harris (plus 4 of their children) plus their granddaughter Elizabeth (his mother) Widow age 28 born [1843] Dowlais. Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare, ED39 Household 137W, Piece 5411, folio 19, page 34. Address: 6 Morgan Row, Cefnpennar 2. Thomas Jones aged 2 born Glamorgan living with mother Elizabeth Jones widow age 35 born [1836] ???? and 3 siblings. Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare, ED32, Household 167, piece 5409 folio 142 page 27. Address: 2 Regent Street. Can anybody with better census search skills than I locate alternative candidates? And can anyone help with the birthplace of the second Elizabeth Jones above? Thanks in anticipation Helen
Photos of: St Mary's Church, Strata Florida, CGN Dear Listers, The latest subject to be added to my 'Welsh Churches and Chapels collection' is: The parish church of St Mary, adjacent to the ruins of Strata Florida Abbey, in the county of Cardiganshire. This webpage includes eight photographs kindly provided by fellow Powys List member Lloyd Lewis (plus one of my own shots). Go to www.jlb2011.co.uk/walespic/churches/ and scroll down the index to the relevant Strata Florida link. Good morning Due to my old e mail address (lynda2twin@hotmail.com) being hacked into a few weeks ago, I have now set up a new e mail account(valleygirl1953@hotmail.co.uk) I am unable to reply to any emails that have been sent to my old email address, as I would be inflicting the virus on everyone. I do apologise for the convenience. RegardsLynda Hunt
Can someone tell me if EGLWYSILAN in the Glamorganshire is near MERTHYR and what denomination is St Illan. My Davies/ Lewis clan seem to be from the Merthyr and Dowlais area I ham seeking my Davies ancestry and have come upon the surname VAUGHAN it was carried on in my 3xgrandmother,also her daughter using it as a middle name like ELIZABETH VAUGHAN,AND HANNAH VAUGHAN LEWIS. Does anyone have this name in their Davies family Dianne
Hello Dianne Try typing the place on google for a map. St Illan is the established church. Church of England then, now Church of Wales. It is a fair distance from Merthyr but back then a good days walk on the mountain top never killed anyone. For more information about EGLWYSILAN try the link at thte bottom of this message for GENUKI and then click on Glamorgan Towns & Parishes. Hi Dianne I have Davies in my family from Caerphilly (Eglwysilan), and area - 1900's. But the only male Davies was my grandfather. Grandma gave birth to 7 girls. None married a Lewis that I can find. Millie Millie Wolff mwolff@sasktel.net
Hi Heather, You might try www.Canada411.ca , the telephone database. Ancestry would perhaps have them on an immigration list as well. Do you know which part of Canada? www.Canadagenweb.org has lists of resources by area. I am in Montreal and will be glad to help if I can Helen ♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥The important thing in this world is not so much where we are but in what direction we are moving. > From: heather.smith8@virgin.net > To: glamorgan@rootsweb.com > Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2011 18:14:57 +0100 > Subject: [GLA] Cousin's friend in Canada > > Does anyone know how to go about locating someone who emigrated to Canada in > the last thirty years, please? My Thanks to Josephine for pointing out my little error in my message about Royal Ancestory. I nearly wrote down the above in my original message! I.E.Countess of Sainsbury's. I also made another boob. It was King Henry The first I was descended from,Not Edward the first. He's my lodger's ancestor. As I said,My "Spellcheck"Button has somehow disappeared from my Toolbar. Can anyone tell me how to get it back please? As it comes in handy for spelling mistakes. I think though,I'm o.k; with this message? Cheers Graham. From:- Graham WILLIAMS,of Canton,Cardiff.
