Hi Lynda, something that happened in my wife's family was that the name was changed. The child in question was registered as Harriett, but then christened as Charlotte and remained as Charlotte throughout the rest of her life. You may find the same thing has happened here, or maybe Rees wasn't his forename but a 2nd forename, this happened a lot and still does. On Free BMD, try searching for... * Rees ...in the first name field and it will bring up any results where the child was registered with the 2nd forename of Rees. Hope this is of use, best wishes, Jon
Could he be illegitimate, Lynda. If he was born about the time of his parents marriage, try searching under his mother's maiden name. Occasionally, when indexing the 'Cambrian' newspaper for www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian I come across items which will not go into the index because for historical reasons we only index items relevant to West Glamorgan, the areas of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot councils, or of general South Wales interest. This one, from page 5 of the edition of 18th June 1880, from a time when no license was required to own a firearm, and when divorce was out of the reach of ordinary men and women, and carried an enormous stigma, was particularly sad and poignant. It is the text of a letter in Welsh found in the pocket of David JAMES (bardic title Dewi Iago), collier, of 31 Bell Street, Trecynon, who shot himself in the head in a railway carriage in Aberdare, where it had been parked for the night, and was found in the morning. 'A word to my wife before I die. I am sorry, my wife, to admit that I cannot live with you any longer. You know why. You have had one letter before on the subject. I hope you have preserved it. There is no good for me at home, as you know, neither day nor night, so it is better that I put an end to my life with my own hands, rather than you should do so, as you have threatened many times to do. If you should happen ever again to marry, take my sorrowful end as a warning to you to behave better and more lovingly to your second husband that you have ever done to me. Every success to you - David James.' The other thing in his pocket was the programme for an eisteddfod at Pontardawe a few weeks later, where he had been invited to adjudicate. What a tragedy that a man so highly thought of should have come to such a decision. Witnesses at the inquest referred to his having been seen drinking a good deal in the days leading up to it. Jeff
This is not my family. Occasionally I do odd bits of research for various reasons, sometimes pure curiosity after seeing something in the 'Cambrian' newspaper, published in Swansea, which is partly indexed by volunteers from 1804 to 1880 (general items) and to about 1920 (Births Marriage and Death announcements) at www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian This chap came from Wiltshire, born about 1833, and was curate at Oxwich, Gower and later Rector of St George's Super Ely near Cardiff. He seems to have emigrated to Tasmania and died there in 1921. If anyone is researching him I have a curious piece of information from the Cambrian of 11th June 1880 which is not in the index. Jeff
just wondering! loll

Hello Graham Have a look at this site: http://www.measuringworth.com/calculators/ppoweruk/ Current data is only available till 2009. In 2009, £430 0s 0d from 1772 is worth £42,600.00 using the retail price index £585,000.00 using average earnings As for 1820, have a go yourself. Try either of these two sites http://measuringworth.com/calculators/ppoweruk/ - calculates to 2009 and http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency/default0.asp#mid - calculates to 2005 But the calculations give widely differing values. also see http://projects.exeter.ac.uk/RDavies/arian/current/howmuch.html for extra information. I am now going to unsubscribe as we are deluged with immature rubbish, and the last straw is being addressed as baby. Thank you and goodnight. There are three Ann Williams (at least) living in Aberdare with birthdate of 1843 or 1844. My g-grandmother was born 15 Mar 1843 (according to her Ohio, USA, death certificate). Is it possible SKS can provide the 1861 census records for her. There may also be a Mary Ann Williams living in the same household. She later married Levi MORGAN who at the time was living on Mason Street, hamlet of Fforchanan, with his family and a lodger named Daniel Williams. I'm guessing there might be a connection (don't laugh: I know how many Williamses there are in Wales). But it may be a connection. Thanks. I don't like most of the sites, they don't seem to "really" get what that sort of money bought on those dates. You sort of have to find things such as you could live really well on 5 and 10 pounds a year in the 18th century. IIRC back in the 18th century 400 or 500 pounds invested could support you for the rest of your life Novels of the period 1900 1920 used to say you could live well or comfortably on 100 pounds a year (but when you needed a phone then, 100 pds wasn't enough) Eliz On Sun, Jul 24, 2011 at 1:01 PM, robert williams <canton_cardiff_wales@yahoo.com> wrote: > I'm still here Baby. > I expect its because its a weekend that the list has gone quiet. > Anyway,Can anyone tell me where I can click in to that site which shows what for instance, 430 pounds in 1772 would be worth today please? > And also 200 pounds in 1825. > Cheers Graham. > From:- Graham WILLIAMS,of Canton,Cardiff. > Glamorgan F.H.S;#551. > > -- > > To send to the list send to glamorgan@rootsweb.com > GLAMORGAN Family History Mailing List archives etc. are at > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/WLS/GLAMORGAN.html > - > A large amount of information, and a wide variety of useful links, may be found at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/ > > - > The South/West Wales Lookup Exchange and Gareth's Help Pages > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~walesle/wal/AW.html and > http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to GLAMORGAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
