    3. What a great way to help other genealogists. I have taken on a similar task in conjunction with my local Family History Society. With a group of ladies I am transcribing all the graves in a local cemetery close to my home. We clean up and trim the edges of the headstones and photo them to upload to the Canadian Headstones website. I am enjoying it right now as the weather is super. My only problem is avoiding shadows on the headstones. I cannot move my subject or the sun so I have difficulty avoiding shadows. My only option is to take the photo when we have an overcast or cloudy day. Not happening this month. Thanks for the phone idea. 3. I'd take no as the answer and leave it. Not everyone is interested in family history or contact with unknown relatives. It is an intrusion on their lives and we should respect that. He may have decided you were way too pushy - I have waited months before getting replies to my letters and it is not unheard of for a year to go by before a reply is received, sometimes not even by the initial recipient - sometimes they will pass it on to another relative who is more interested. He may very well have thought you were a scam - there are a lot about these days. A phone call puts a person on the spot to make a decision there and then. A follow up letter in a few months time might have been better although, as someone else has suggested, a letter from the actual relative might have been better received. He may think you are after family money, land etc. If he changes his mind he knows how to contact you. Just my 2c worth. :) Regards Lyn In Oz.

    3. Hello Allen, I happened upon your site and wonder if you can help a raw researcher ? I can trace my Family, John and Mary Callaghan and their children , 11 Mountain Row, from the 1871 through to 1901 censuses, but can find no trace of them in any B. M. & D. records. Do you have any burial records, or indeed any information at all as to where I can look ? Would you know which Catholic church they would have attended, for example ? Do you know where old Catholic church records from that time would now be deposited ? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes, Helen Stradling

    3. I might have read your post wrongly , but my interpretation of what you have written is that this person does not want to be contacted by you or anybody else in connection with his family history. I would therefore think it unreasonable and ill advised for any member of the list to approach this person in connection with the request posted ,as he has already stated he felt a phone call was intrusive. THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION. Any comments ..please talk to me off list. 3. Hi Billie and Gareth, I have never found that to be so. TNA are exceptionally helpful and a visit is a great experience as there are so very many documents to choose from. It sounds Gareth, as if you have had a bad experience which has turned you against them, but be reassured you and Billie, that they are a great outfit and are most interested in assisting if you have problems with any of their downloads. Do remember that we have a vast collection of material held there. It is the official archive for England, Wales and the central UK government, and contains over 1,000 years of British history. I have download wills and other documents and also downloaded the page for our village recently from the Domesday book. Unless your looking for a specific item or a minority interest such as the Spanish Civil War: British Volunteers Lists. They can't be bothered with the general publics needs. 3. Hi Gareth, My tuppenceworth is that the records on the National Archives website have most definitely helped me to find out certain things about my family members, and filled in gaps I wouldn't have otherwise known about. It's really helped to put flesh on the bones as we say. It could also be said that the big online companies aren't interested in us, only in what they want and in their own pockets, but we still benefit from what they have made available online, and we dig in to their resources regularly. Kindest regards, Jon

    3. My fivepenniesworth. I don't go there too often, but I found my ggg grandfather's will on there, by accident, and it was so interested to read (after translating the old hand-writing) what household goods he left his children. The military records are awesome. I even found my own Merchant Navy discharge book on there.
