Thanks for the link Graham. I found it easier online to go to http://www.walesonline.co.uk/ And use the Goggle search box to find Viewpoints. I do think they could better their layout though. It isn't an easy site to move around in. Going back to the site again, I decided to try a search for 'family history' and this brought up a more interesting set of links. You can email the editor from here too. It just seems sensible to manage enough Welsh to deal with gravestones <G> It would be nice to be able to use non smart phones but it is sort of nice to beable to see what part of the Cemetery has been covered! I am also trying to deal with a Canadian Cemetery with German soldiers burials but I can manage a little bit of German <G> Eliz On Mon, Aug 8, 2011 at 7:12 PM, Evelyn Clarke <evsroots@btinternet.com> wrote: > surely it would be easier to skip image and let someone answer who can > translate welsh - well this is what I do unless it is just basic name and > when they died when you can translate the date ... > > I have only recently started transcribing for Billion Graves and I think for > all of us doing family research its a wonderful idea - have also discovered > that they are running a test for people to upload pictures they have that > havent been taken with a smartphone - I for one dont have a phone that you > can use to upload them (even tho I think its a grand idea) - its just as > well for us all to do our bit, I am pretty sure most of us researching our > tree have pics that in time could get uploaded to this site > > Evelyn > > > ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eliz Hanebury" <elizhgene@gmail.com> > To: "DYFED" <dyfed@rootsweb.com>; <powys@rootsweb.com>; "GLAMORGAN@rootsweb" > <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, August 08, 2011 11:21 PM > Subject: [GLA] Billion Graves > > >> I have said I am transcribing photos at Billion Graves and some are >> from Trefriw Public Cemetery and I need some serious Welsh help <G> >> >> A Hunodd April 22, 1927 >> >> I can't read the rest of the stone well but it seems to include his >> wife as well and if someone would be willing to very quickly translate >> <G> I would appreciate it >> >> >> >> Eliz >> -- >> >> To send to the list send to glamorgan@rootsweb.com >> GLAMORGAN Family History Mailing List archives etc. are at >> http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/WLS/GLAMORGAN.html >> - >> A large amount of information, and a wide variety of useful links, may be >> found at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/ >> >> - >> The South/West Wales Lookup Exchange and Gareth's Help Pages >> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~walesle/wal/AW.html and >> http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html >> >> >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >> GLAMORGAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >> quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >

Someone living near this location discovered a thread on this subject in the Ancestry list archives from some years ago, and has sent me an old photograph of the property, which I am happy to pass on to anyone interested, or to anyone with a relevant web site. "It's a photo of Cwm Byr allegedly taken in 1947 - but most of us locals think it is a lot older than that. Nowadays this area is surrounded by Forestry Commission owned pine forests - and Cwm Byr was razed to the ground by them in the late 50s/early 60s - so this photo came as quite a revelation to me, to see it looking so open." If anyone wants more information have a look at http://www.twmbarlwm.co.uk/ or contact me, I will then put you in touch with the person who supplied the photo ( which actually appears on the blog on the Twmbarlwm site). Any journey by public transport in Wales may be planned at http://planner.traveline-cymru.info/journeyplanner/enterJourneyPlan.do?hss=LYgFa5995029 you may input a street address of where you are staying as the "from" and National Library, Aberystwyth as the "to", and it will give you the optimum routing, including maps of each segment. Hi I am interested in William Thomas b 1884 Cardiff he married Fanny Rees Cardiff in 1904. They had children Lily b1908 and Thomas b 1910/11 in Barry. William was the youngest son of William Thomas b Hereford 1848 and Mary Collins b Cork 1846 and his siblings were George, John, Mary, Thomas, Samuel and Catherine all born in Cardiff between 1868 and 1884. John was my grandfather and lived in Kathleen Street, Barry for most of his life.. I have details of their ancestors and have had contact with descendants of all of the siblings except William and I would like to complete the set. Please contact. I would also like to hear from descendants of William Horton and Rachel Jasper who were my grandmother Agnes's parents. Many thanks Ken Thomas
Hi Doris I think there was a bus when I was there but it didn't run on Saturday? For some reason I ended up walking and it was quite a hike up the hill but it was fine on the way back. Hi Graham This project for Cathays Cemetery was done back in 2006 by a gentleman named Richard he took hundreds and hundreds of photo's and his site was http://www.cefnpennar.com/ He is also known as "The Ogre" I don't know if this was ever completed, at the time I helped out and have quite a few photos of headstones. http://www.1911census.co.uk/ is the web site that has the full 1911 census. Ancestry is gradually attempting to improve its coverage of head of household in 1911, as I understand it. You can do searching for free using the advanced search facility to identify people in the same household with someone with a distinctive name. I was in the same position as you a few weeks ago. Never saw one bus !!!! and ended up walking from the town centre. By walking up the hill, the nearest bus stop appears to be the one opposite the hospital. From there it is a short walk up the hill but quite a long one along the drive to the library. My best suggestion is to get a taxi from outside the railway station (the bus station is next door btw). Cost approx £4-£5 (I did that on the first day as I had a slight detour to the guest-house so paid a little more). More expensive thatn the bus but atleast you will get to the front door. ----- Original Message ----- From: <dcruickshank@spessart.com> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 06, 2011 6:33 PM Subject: [GLA] NLW question > Hello List, > I'm planning a visit to the NLW and do have a place to stay in > Aberystwyth. Wow! I thought I'd share this with everyone so forgive me if it's common knowledge and seems like I'm touting - I'm truly not touring but am excited by it.... I've just received my first ever android smart phone so have been trolling around, as you do, to find what apps might suit my interests. Imagine my delight when I came across an application called Billion Graves.... Basically -- anyone with a smart phone can participate and help map out every grave in every cemetery simply by taking a photo of each headstone on their smartphone and recording it's location automatically -- the photos are uploaded to the website and automatically added to the database so anyone can search for and see the headstone/details - you can transcribe the info quickly online. I'm off to my local cemetery here in Christchurch NZ tomorrow to make a start! I imagine there's a huge number of fellow researchers out there looking for graves so this is such an interesting option to be able to use... Cheers Lynda

Can you use the surname only with Middlesex? Any really unusual first name that you might find? I have Lacy's in the US who I have to use their first name only because the "L" morphs into S and some that I can only wonder at.
