Hello All, I've only just arrived back from Cardiff. I spent a few hours going through my mother's photographs and was delighted to find a multitude of old photographs that I hadn't seen before. Amongst the photos I found the last page of a letter that my mother knew about and never got around to reading as her eyesight isn't great. After reading through several times I realised the writer was a grand uncle of mine who was killed in March 1918 and was buried or had his name inscribed on the memorial at Arras. My question is how important (historically ) or rare these letters are? It means everything to me and of course I will pass onto my children. Obviously this question is to researchers who would be clued into the military side of their research. My grand uncles letter isn't dated as I have the last page but he does state he is in France and that he thanked his parents for the parcel which they rarely received. He also asks about a brother of his who was ill and he would like to hear from his brother and sister in Canada. He ends with ......your loving son etc. xxxx I never thought I'd make such a discovery and to be honest I felt a touch of sadness and yet excited too. Many thanks, Kevin.
Many thanks for the information, Rosemary. I have spoken to Brian Wilkinson from the LDS Family History Centre in Cardiff and apparently the Centre will be closed for approximately 6 months from August for building works and refurbishment. The website is saying the centre is inactive when you order films as orders for films are not being accepted at the moment due to the possibility they may not arrive before August. The Merthyr Tydfil Centre is open during this period if you want to order films to be viewed there. Rosemary Smith
Thank you, Sean. I guess he is not my gr great uncle whose father's name was Bartholomew. I will be interested in hearing if anyone has the parish register and witnesses names - that might suggest a relationship. But, this is the most important information. Photocopies of the St Illtyd's and St Mary's (Merthyr) registers are held by Merthyr Tydfil Public Library. I've heard they will do lookups and make copies. Glamorgan Family History Society Index to St Illtyd's, Dowlais, marriages has: 1861 Apr 13; Shea, Patrick, (son of) Timothy, (married) Curren, Ellen, (daughter of) Curren, Patrick The index doesn't list witnesses. The civil registration and the actual St Illtyd's register would have that information. Hello List Can anyone tell me where Lynn Cottage was or is? I believe it was on Town Hill in Swansea. My grandfather lived there in about 1920. Thanks Frances
I was going to order a copy of a microfilm from the Family Search website for use at the Family History Centre at the Mormon Church in Rhiwbina, Cardiff but a message was displayed saying that the Centre in Cardiff was "inactive" and asking me to choose another Centre. Does anyone know what has happened to the Cardiff Family History Centre and whether it will be re-opening soon? Roy
There are two places in Swansea called Brynymor Road, with or without hyphens as Bryn-y-mor. Brynymor Road, SA1 runs down from the Uplands to St Helens Road. No train lines nearby. Brynymor Road, Gowerton, Swansea SA4 is some miles out of the city centre, in Gowerton, originally in Loughor parish. There is a main train line in Gowerton, and there used to be a separate one, the L & NWR, which is now largely a cycle track, but neither is very close to Brynymor Road. Was your family in Gowerton? I sent Althea a suggestion, but forgot to "Reply All". It's been a long time since I've participated actively. Anyway, those of you using FTM 2012 may find this helpful: In the upper right hand corner of your screen there will be a printer icon. To print a Family page just click the printer and you will get a drop down menu with several options. Hope this helps. Yes Jeff in Gowerton, am sorry, my geography sucks but am working on it. Apparently there was a Gatehouse for the Trains & Berry's Cottage was nearby. Sorry for misspelling Brynymor Rd. William & Margaretta built on Brynymor Rd. Gowerton abt 1910 & their Grdson still lives in that home but there was another before 1900 owned by a Berry Family, which one??? El
Am working on Berry side of Family & apparently there was (gone now) am guessing early pre 1900's a residence on Bryn-y-more Rd., somewhere around the train tracks, called Berry's Cottage. Does anyone know which Berry Family lived there? Have tried the Historical Society but they were unable to help. Do have info on the home William & Margaretta were in abt 1910. But nothing on this Berry Cottage Ellen
Dear Gethin and John I believe Edward Daniel and Benjamin Meyrick are the descendants of Howell and Mary Meyrick and are not connected to Daniel Meyrick whose family Bible is the subject of this post. I have the details and would be quite happy to discuss it all off line if either of you are interested. Edward
Dear Gethin My wife Lettice is related to these Meyricks, though not descended directly. We are fairly sure that your Daniel 1844 had an uncle Howell Meyrick (born about 1815 Merthyr) who had sons including Edward Daniel Meyrick and Benjamin Meyrick. Each of these two sons married a great-aunt of Lettice, one on her father's side and the other on her mother's side. But we have not explored the Meyrick family very thoroughly. So while we have no claim on the Bible, we should be interested to know of any information in it about Meyricks other than Daniel and Margaret and their children. John Tanner ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gethin Matthews" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 9:38 PM Subject: [GLA] Meyrick Family Bible, Margam ** ** Dear all**** ** ** I am in possession of an old Welsh Bible, which was left a few decades ago in a commercial premises in Port Talbot. It commemorates the birth of various members of the Meyrick family - of Daniel (b. 1844) and his wife Margaret (b.1849), and their numerous children born between 1868 and 1887. I see in the 1881 census that they were living in Saron Cottages, Margam, and that all members of the family were born in that parish. If any descendants of the Meyrick family would like to claim the Bible – or if anyone else knows where it would find a good home, please contact me.**** ** ** Gethin**** ****
Meyrick Family Bible, Margam Dear Gethin, My response to your message is not to give you some positive information about a possible descendant, for which I apologise, but to comment on the fact that this Meyrick family is often confused with one that I am related to. Without going in to details as to why I have had to unravel the information suffice it to say that claims, particular from a US subscriber to Ancestry and a few others using that information, confuse the families of Howell and Mary Meyrick and that of Lewis and Elinor/Elenor Meyrick. The problem arises because of the birth of two Meyrick boys who were given the name Lewis in the Margam area within two years of each other. The father of Daniel Meyrick was Lewis Meyrick born during the Dec Qtr 1840, Neath Vol. 26, p 386 to Lewis and Elinor/Elenor Meyrick. The other Lewis Meyrick boy was born in Dec 1838 and registered during the Mar Qtr 1839, Neath Vol. 26, p 405 under the surname Mayrick, whose parents were Howell and Mary Meyrick. This family did not have a son called Daniel although it would have seemed logical since Mary’s maiden name was Daniel. I have not followed Daniel Meyrick’s descent as they are not to be related to me so can’t help you trace any of them. Pity, as I could have helped you with the other family. I write this in case you get drawn into the discussion about which family it is supposed to be!
