    1. [GLA] Marriage Cert from GRO
    2. Mary JR Gilchrist
    3. I am hoping someone can coach me about a strategy to find a marriage certificate for my great great grandparents when my own attempt did not succeed, see below. Having just been provided with an obituary from 1904 that a colleague found in Tarian y Gweithwyr and translated, I requested a marriage certificate from the GRO but was disappointed that they could not find the record. The obituary provided the bride's surname and the date of marriage, as follows: Mrs. Evans was born in Half Way House near Talley, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire on September 15^th 1822.She was the daughter of John and Ann Jones, one of nine children. She joined the Baptist Chapel in Cwmifor near Llandeilo at the age of 18 -- during the tenure of Dd Griffith. She married D. R. Evans on November 12^th 1845 and they lived together as a happy family unit until 22^nd April 1898 when he, the head of the family, was stolen away by death. Her forename was spelled Elleanor in the obituary so I used that spelling even if I have also found it spelled Elinor or Eleanor. I gave his forename as David as I have been told that middle initials were uncommon in mid 19th century Wales even if he went by D. R. at life's end in Iowa, USA. As both were from Carmarthenshire, I gave their marriage place as Carmarthenshire but this is not certain. They were in Glamorganshire by 1851 or as early as 1847, see below. A "boarder" named Ann Jones age 72 was living with them in 1861 and was born in Talley. The obituary of David also gives 1845 as the date of marriage but I realize that people might not always relate the true year of their marriage. Of eight children, four lived to maturity and came with them to Iowa in 1868/9. Rees, the oldest of these, was born in 1851 and was followed by Ann, David and Margaret. Apparently they reused the names of two children who had not survived. In Aberdare christening, census and/or death records, I find evidence for an Ann born 1847 and died 1849 and a Margaret born 1849 and died 1858. Does this suggest that David's mother's name was Margaret? They did not appear to use the name of Elleanor's father for their sons and one does not know the name of David's parents. Should I extend the years beyond 1844-1846, change the place of marriage and/or alter the spelling of Elleanor or supply the initials of David? I was familiar with the old way that one searched for certs by quarter and could select the candidate name(s) and was surprised to find the new GRO service does not provide for this approach. Thanks for your thoughts, Mary

    3. Good morning Jill Thomas was indeed born in Glamorgan - Harris Court, Womanby Street in Cardiff, to William & Louisa. (I shall have to look at that tree in Ancestry that shows a birth in the USA). I have obtained his birth certificate, his parents' marriage etc, his own marriage - children. The discrepancy comes with his birth date as per his certificate - 25 November 1843 vs his baptismal date 19 November 1843 & thirdly with the date as it is written on his Application for his CC as 15 October 1842. All the certificates that I have are backed up by the very complete record from the time of his daughter's placement in the Muller Home after his death & that of his wife. These documents supply all living relatives names as well as those whose deaths were behind her being sent to the home - grandfather William amongst them. I am surprised that I had not noticed the dates before this. The Maritime University in Newfoundland has the crews' lists of the ship upon which he served pre-certification so I am hoping to glean something from those. And last night I discovered Certificates of Competency & the Applications on Ancestry, including those of the Master & First Mate who were in command when his ship went down in 1874. BoT Inquiry records appear to blame the Master for the wreck & Thomas' death & I have long been curious as to how they fared afterwards (the Master was suspended for a time) & the Mate (who also held a Master's Cert) was to be 'brought to the attention' of the hierarchy. Thomas' record is perhaps the most complete in my research thanks originally to Pat Sewell on the list, to the records held at Mullers & of course to a whole lot of Glamlist folks - Jeff, Bob & yourself among them. I have long intended to write about his adventures & now, with my first grandchild here, I have begun in earnest. Helen

    3. Helen, I see that you have mentioned Cardiff, sorry that I hadn't read this. Baptised St Johns Church, Cardiff 19th November 1843 Thomas son of William and Louisa STOCKWOOD of Womanby Street, St John's [Cardiff], Horsekeeper There is a marriage on Free BMD of William and Louisa in 1839 I believe that, as in many cases, the couple has neglected to register the baby. They had forgotten or thought that the baptism was enough official record, but the vicar reminded them. Hello all - I have a birth certificate for Thomas Stockwood, born 25 November 1843 to William Stockwood & Louisa Fullinlove. The birth was registered according to the certificate on 3 December 1843 - there is a corresponding entry in FreeBMD. I have just noticed that the same Thomas, in filling out his"Application to be examined for an Engineer's Certificate of Competency" in 1865, records his birth date as 15 October 1842 & have been unable to find a corresponding BMD entry. That they are one and the same person, ie the son of William, is validated by many, many documents covering his life as a ship's engineer, his subsequent death & the placement of one of his children in the Muller Home. At first I imagined there may have been some sort of reason, such as an age limit for a certificate that might have caused him to fudge the date, but the time difference is so small. Does anyone have an opinion on perhaps the why - whether I should try to solve this (and how?) thank you ... 3. Hello Elizabeth & Ken - thank you the case is getting muddier ... the records & dates I have are as follows / Birth Certificate - dob 25 November 1843 / FreeBMD - IV Q 1843 / Application for certificate - dob 15 October 1842 / and now this ...baptisms St. John & St. Mary Cardiff date of baptism - 19 November 1843 (this is a photocopy of the register page obtained from LDS many years ago). This last one is really strange - it shows his baptism 6 days before he was born as per the birth certificate OR a year after his birth according to the application. I have decided that it might be a good idea to search for his marine records pre-certificate - perhaps there was some sort of age restriction ?? thank you for reading ... I am not exactly asking for help because I don't know what to ask. my gr grandfather James Shea was born in Kerry about 1842 (1861 census), lived in Glamorgan, married Catherine O'Neil in 1864 and had one daughter Margaret Mary in 1865. Unfortunately I have not found any James Shea in 1871. So, I don't know what to think. I am not really asking for help, partly because I have tried to make this succinct and may have left out information. if it is the same James Shea then he seems to have lowered his age, which was what got me going here in the first place. 3. Ages were sometimes misquoted to allow the person to get a better job and so more money. My grandfather was in the Merchant Navy. He was born in 1870 but his papers show that from 1887-1891 he was 21 and in 1892 became 22. Ken Thomas

    3. Thank you James & Lyn I am beginning to wonder if the 'fib' happened when he first went to sea. The records show only the ships upon which he served after his Certificate was granted. The application does show however his ship from 1863 on so I shall have to see if I can find ship's papers - they may show if he served on another before 1863. thank you both again - any insight is helpful Helen "Walking the stacks in a library, dragging your fingers across the spines ~ it's hard not to feel the presence of sleeping spirits" Robin Sloan

    3. Remember that there was a fine payable if a birth was not registered within 6 weeks? By registering on 3 December, the parents were just outside that time frame for a date of 15 October, even if Thomas later adjusted his year of birth from 1843 to 1842. It was quite common for parents to 'adjust' the date to avoid the fine! Either year would have been OK for an Engineering Certificate of Competency provided he had the requisite qualifications. 1. [GLA] a discrepancy - opinions on what may be done?
    2. Helen D'All
    3. 3. Hi Helen, This does not appear to be related to the switch from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian calendar which occurred about 1582 and was implemented about 1752 in Great Britain. This just changed the starting date of the calendar year. The delay in implementing it caused a loss (I think of several days) due to the method of calculating years and leap years. Your dates are much later and are 13 months (from 25 Nov 1843 to 15 Oct 1942) which in my opinion is not trivial. So I don't think this "time difference is so small". Maybe Mr. Stockwood wanted to look older at some point in his life for some reason and once he fibbed once he stuck with it. I think the idea that there might have been a minimum age to be licensed as an Engineer is a good one. There must be a way to find out more about this. 1. [GLA] Finding ANN(E) JENKIN(S) and CHARLOTTE JENKINS
    2. Jeff & Jolynn Barneck
    3. I'm revisiting this website after an absence of four years. I've seen people mention they've gotten help from here; so I'm joining in. I've recently been trying to find a birth or baptismal date for the oldest sister of my gg-grandfather, EVAN JENKINS (baptized 22 July 1817 in Cowbridge). The sister's name is ANNE (or ANN) JENKINS. I think she was born about 1813 in Cowbridge, Glamorganshire, Wales. Her father was JOHN JENKINS and her mother was ELIZABETH (THOMAS) JENKINS. They were married on 20 July 1811 in Cowbridge. I have a marriage for her in Cardiff BPW (I don't know what BPW means; it was listed on the Glamorgan Index of marriages) to a widower named WILLIAM DALLEN FORD (Dalling, Dallin are also variations). The date is 1 October 1837. Mr. FORD was also married to REBECCA CATTLE OR COTTLE on 26 July 1829 in Cardiff. The index listing has ANNE'S (the bride's) parish as Cardiff as well as for the groom. Maybe she moved there to work. I have a death date for ANNE of 11 December 1869 and a burial of 16 December 1869 in St. John Cemetery, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales. I've seen different listings for the parish there--one being St. John's Parish (along with St. Mary's Parish) and one for St. John the Baptist Parish. How much difference does that make in the parish registers? I have looked through the microfilmed copies of bishops' transcripts for Cowbridge beginning 1811 and forward to find the children of JOHN and ELIZABETH JENKINS and have only found four of the six children that family records say belonged to that family. I am missing ANNE at the beginning and CHARLOTTE, the last child. CHARLOTTE supposedly was born about 1822 in Cowbridge; and her mother, ELIZABETH JENKINS, died 27 December 1822 and was buried 30 December 1822, according to family records. So perhaps CHARLOTTE died in childbirth or soon thereafter along with her mother. I don't know. Can any of you reading this email help me find proof of the beginning of existence for either ANNE or CHARLOTTE JENKINS? Thanks for your help. JoLynn Barneck [email protected]

    1. [GLA] David Eynon JENKINS and Sarah, nee EVANS - Aberdare - 1918
    2. Nina Jenkins
    3. I recently found a piece of information in the Aberdare Leader that said that A Sgt D E Jenkins 103587 was decorated for bravery whilst in the RFA in 1918. He was son-in-law of Mr and Mrs Evans of North View Terrace. As one of my ancestors was indeed a Mr Evans of North View Terrace and my name is Jenkins, I was intrigued and followed it up. After much research I discovered that he was not connected to me at all, although both my ancestor and his father-in-law were Evan Evans. I now have the 1918 marriage certificate for David Eynon Jenkins of 5 Wayne St, Aberdare and Sarah Evans of 4 North Avenue, Aberdare. Despite his Army number being noted incorrectly, I have managed to obtain various pieces of military information that go some way to explaining what actions led to him being decorated. For more information on the other Evans family members, check the 1911 census as they were at the same Aberdare address then. I will be happy to pass the certificate and all other research to anyone who is connected to David Jenkins (whose birth was registered in Haverfordwest in 1893) or the Evans family.
