Thanks Dai - perfect. The Big Hill - is probably the same as "the Hill" of older times... That is why I said locals know of it - it has rung bells before with locals but I have never actually tried to identify it on a map before. :) They mention Dyfffryn Clydach in some records which I think would encompass "the Hill"? There are, it seems, an unbelievable amount of Leysons in the Neath area all called Thomas or William and I am trying to work out the family groups. Cilfrew mentioned earlier has popped up somewhere too but I haven't asked about them - at least I don't think I have ...I periodically post bits about them as I find new things or decide to try and work on sorting them out. Will check the archives later. Jill, There are Leyson families in Neath Higher in 1841. The parish covers Ystradgynlais, but I found some in Ystradvellte (Ystradfellte), notably at Maesmarchog and The Mill - I suspect that this is the Hill/Mill you refer to, and is not the one in Neath Abbey. These are in modern Banwen. Lyn, Do you have the 1840 map of the area? Hill Road is not named, but runs from near the Hope and Anchor in Neath Abbey (the East edge of this map), crosses the railway line between Hill House and St. John's church. (Hill House is, I believe, the vicarage), passes Maes-y-Llan House and ends shortly after (at Skewen incline, known locally in my day as 'The Big Hill'). Nowadays it is known as Drummau Rd, and Streetview shows it, with the main Swansea-London railway line crossing it, as not much more than a gentle incline. I used to walk up and down that hill every day to my primary school. I should have thought of it earlier when you said 'The Hill'! Hi Lyn It could be that 'Hill' was its local nick-name. We do have a tendency to abbreviate in Wales. So I would do the same as Dai has suggested, using the streets he has suggested and also look for places like pubs or chapels there on nearby. Good morning Lyn, Limiting "Neath" to the pre-1970's Neath Borough I can think of only one area (as opposed to street/road etc) with "Hill" in the name and that is Hillside Look for "Hillside" in Google maps. Hillside is (roughly) the area bounded by Dan y graig Road to the West, Hillside (the road) to the North, Cook Rees Avenue/Kingdon Owen Road to the East and Groves Road to the South. You'll see the park is called "Mount Pleasant" . Roughly speaking, it's about 200 feet above sea-level which though not stratospheric, takes a fair amount of deep breathing. Hope this helps Charles [email protected] NEATH -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Lyn Sent: 17 August 2013 03:28 To: [email protected] Subject: [GLA] The Hill Neath Hi all Hoping there is someone with local knowledge who can tell me where "the Hill" is in Neath. A warning to anyone looking for these, the most frustrating surname I have yet come across. My relative's gt. grandmother Mary Howard, widow, remarried at George JEENES but the next time I came across her in 1901 they were GEENES living 'in the grounds' of St. Donat's Castle - I trust they were at least in a house of some kind! As I tracked them with great difficulty in the Llandow / Wick / Marcross area up to Mary's death in 1925, I found the following spellings. JEANS GEENES GEENS GEANS JEANS JEANES JEENS I had traced the HOWARDS back to st. Nicholas and St. Lythans areas with no difficulty over about 100 years, even though they moved about the place a great deal, but it was hard work finding Mary in 1911 at Llandow, and I found her by looking for her HOWARD sons. 1911 Census, Llandow Ref. RG14 3264 Schedule75, OLD COURT NEWYDD, LLANDOW Mary JEANS Head married 60 charwoman born Radnorshire David HOWARD Son Single 30 Gen. Farm Lab. born Penarth William HOWARD son Single 18 Teamster? on Farm born Ely, Cardiff N.B. Though it appears on Ancestry as JEANS, in fact Mary filled out the census form herself and signed it GEANS! So I checked for her death again on Free BMDs, and there she appears as Mary H. JEANS, died aged 80 Bridgend, Sept. Qtr. 1925, Ref. 11a751 . . . . . At her burial at Wick she appears as MARY HOWARD JEANS. George had abandoned the home [some time between 1901 and 1911] according to the family, probably leaving Mary to look out for his younger children from his first marriage as well as her own. I think this will be my lot for a while, but if anyone is interested I am happy to pass on my findings. Wendy
