There are 6 Walter Charles or Charles Walters reg in 1885 or 6 none of which have the supposed fathers name. Strangely all but one are in the London "area". I get no Charles Robert or Robert Charles being registered but it wouldn't be beyond reason that he was born before 1837. Then I took a look at London baptisms and using Charles Robert as father, there was a Violet baptized in Lewisham (one of only two with a father Charles Robert) Eliz Not Today and Not without a Fight (Anon) For all that has been, thanks. I forgot to add that my Pal seems to think that his Father Walter Charles FREEMAN was the son of Charles Robert FREEMAN. So the one in Lewisham is most probably the wrong man. Cheers Graham. Graham Williams, Glam;FHS# 551. of Canton,Cardiff.

Roger, Your best would be to contact Pontypridd library http://www.rctcbc.gov.uk/en/leisurelibrariesculture/libraries/libraries-locationsandopeninghours/pontypriddlibrary/pontypriddlibrary.aspx They will hold an archive of the past issues of the local newspaper 'Pontypridd Observer'. The best you can expect is a 'funeral notice' which will list the names of family etc. members but no addresses. Even then you should provide the date of the funeral (or approximate say 3-5 days from date of decease) as these notices can appear one or two weeks after that (it is a weekly publication) If Royston Watkins was someone of importance in the local community there could be an article about him but that is pretty rare these days - you are stretched to find even news in these papers. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger M Evans" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 25, 2013 10:11 PM Subject: [GLA] Obituary Pontypridd 1990 Royston Edward Watkins
Would any lister have access to publications in the Pontypridd area and be able to either copy me any obituary relating to Royston or advise where I might be able to obtain a copy. Royston was born 6th Sept 1922, within the Pontypridd area, one of eight children born to Edward and May (nee Cooper)Watkins and departed this life in November of 1990. My interest follows from his great great grandmother being my great great aunt and I would like to reconnect with what appears to be an extensive family which has developed in/from the Pontypridd area Regards Roger M Evans
Many thanks to all those who have assisted me in the search. I have thanked them all personally. Hello, I wrote to the list in May this year to seek help in finding the hymn music that accompanied the lyrics my grandmother SARAH THORNE wrote in 1913 for the Senghenydd disaster. I had no success in finding the music so I contacted the Senghenydd Heritage Centre asking if they would consider including her words as a reading during one of the events taking place during the centenary. To my delight they agreed and it is planned it will now be sung to a Welsh hymn at the Gymanfa Ganu Service on the 13th October. Further to this the Welsh singers and composers Dan and Laura Curtis who sing the Great American Songbook music asked if they could write new music for Sarahs hymn. The new music, which is beautiful, has now been recorded and is currently on YouTube (Prepare to Meet thy God). This talented couple have also written "A Miners Song" also on YouTube this is the Charity single to raise funds for the National Mining Memorial. Sarahs hymn with the new music will be performed at the Blackwood Miners Institute Concert on the 5th October 2013. I would just like to share with the GLA list this wonderful and exciting thing that has happened through doing Family History research. Best Wishes Cheryl Kettering. The following is a newspaper item printed after the Senghenydd Disaster: The memorial service for the victims of the Senghenydd disaster was conducted at the St Peters Chuch on Sunday evening when the sacred edifice was crowded. The sermon was delivered by the Rev, Campbell Davies, curate-in-charge. Among the hymns sang during the service was one composed by the Bishop of Durham and another by Mrs Thorne, of Abertridwr, both of which were composed after the disaster and relatives to the same. The dead march was also touchingly rendered. Mrs Sarah Ann Thorne was my grandmother, the hymn she composed was called, Prepare To Meet Thy God, the four verses were printed on sheets and sold for one penny. The proceeds of the sale went towards erecting a Memorial Plate. This Plate is still held at St Peters Senghenydd in memory of those who lost their lives in the explosion. I do not know what music was composed for the hymn, would the sheet music be held in an archive somewhere? As this year is the 100th anniversary of the Senghenydd disaster I would really like to trace it. Can the list help with this enquiry. Best wishes Cheryl Kettering.
Hi I have just joined the list again I am looking for some information on the Smith family. Who lived in Llanbradach around 1912 they had a daughter Louise Smith and a boarder George Stevens. I found this on the 1911 census. I was hopping someone could be researching the Smith family Regards Veneita
Hello all. This is for one of my Bowling pals. His father was Walter Charles FREEMAN born around 1887 possibly in Pitsea, [spelling] in Essex. His father was Charles Robert FREEMAN. Nothing is known about him so far. Walter married to Gladys, Mary DAVIES in W.Glamorgan in 1935[from Free BMD;] they lived in Loughor. Walter died in 1958 aged 71. If found in 1891,further information gladly recieved with many thanks. Graham. Graham Williams, Glam;FHS# 551. of Canton,Cardiff.
Graham - I'm looking on Ancestry for a Walter C. son of Charles, but I find none born in Essex. Several born in London with a father, Charles. Are you sure of the county? Have you looked on Familysearch? There are a number of Walter Freeman and Charles Freeman's listed on the 1891 census. Once you narrow down which is likely yours and their location, I can have another look on Ancestry. Pamela, Thanks for that info. It is sometimes very confusing finding the correct person with so many mistakes in the spelling of the names. It seems that Ellen in the 1871 and 1881 Census is the same person but now who were William and Ellen Williams? Jeff and List, Thankyou for your help in finding my AUNTY Ellen Hooley b.1889 m 1909 to Michael PHILLIPSbut nowI have now been trying to find the birth of my GREAT AUNT Ellen HOOLEY b. abt 1864 in Cardiff Glamorgan, Wales , parents Thomas Hooley 1. and Mary Ann Fitzgerald on FreeBMD but no results are coming up. Tried the FreeCen of 1851 Census for Cardiff/ Glamorgan but still no results for the family. I found a marriage for Ellen Hooley in Mar 1896 but when I go into the page site, where it usually has a few names and try to work out who the husband is, it only shows me her name or goes back to the main search page. The numbers shown are Vol 11a 524a.. so what does this a mean? Illegible writing and unable to read the name? How can I find her married name and check out the census? Thanks for any help with this. By selecting all marriages in Merthyr Tydfil district in that quarter ( something easy to do on FreeBMD - don't know whether a commercial site like Ancestry would allow it) and using CTRL-F you can find the other entries already transcribed as page 412 are ALLEN,David which I confirm is correctly transcribed DAVIES,Margaret which I confirm is correctly transcribed DWYER,Margaret which I confirm is correctly transcribed WILLIAMS,Thomas which I confirm is correctly transcribed I assume that unless Margaret Davies and Margaret Dwyer were the same person, with an alias, there ought to be another male on this page number. I can't find him immediately. I confirm that there was no GRADY or O'GRADY entry in Merthyr Tydfil district in March quarter 1857 There are quite a lot of Irish surnames in the pages following 412, including 414, 416 and 417, so that run of GRO index numbers might be from the register of a Catholic church, or a register office if no Catholic Church was registered at the time. There is an 1861 census entry for a Thomas Hooley b 1836 Ireland with wife Mary A and two children, Mary A aged 3 and William aged 7 months, in Henry Street, Cardiff. Could they be Ellen's parents and siblings? In 1871 Ellen Hooley b 1864 is described as a niece living with William and Ellen Williams in Roath, Cardiff. I think she must be the "Gellon Hooly" aged 17 in the same household in 1881 now described as general servant. I haven't found her in 1891. Pamela Thankyou for your help in finding my AUNTY Ellen Hooley b.1889 m 1909 to Michael PHILLIPSbut nowI have now been trying to find the birth of my GREAT AUNT Ellen HOOLEY b. abt 1864 in Cardiff Glamorgan, Wales , parents Thomas Hooley 1. and Mary Ann Fitzgerald on FreeBMD but no results are coming up. The FreeBMD transcription is _1_ not just 1, and the _ indicates that another number is present but unreadable. In fact if you look at the linked image ANC-05/P-Z/1857M1-S-0225.jpg you will see that the page number for Bridget SHEA is 412 I have submitted a correction request via the FreeBMD facility so there is no need for anyone else to do so.
