You will find either R.S.D. or U.S.D. (Urban Sanitary District) on a great many birth certificates from that era. From Wikipedia..... "Sanitary districts were established in England and Wales in 1875 and in Ireland in 1878. The districts were of two types, based on existing structures: Urban sanitary districts in towns with existing local government bodies Rural sanitary districts in the remaining rural areas of poor law unions. Each district was governed by a sanitary authority and was responsible for various public health matters such as providing clean drinking water, sewers, street cleaning, and clearing slum housing. "In England and Wales, both rural and urban sanitary districts were replaced in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894 by the more general rural districts and urban districts. A similar reform was carried out in Ireland in 1899 by the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898.". -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Famous family trees blog: http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/tag/roy-stockdill/ "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Hello the list, My grandfather's birth certificate shows under Column 1 - the when and where born column - the date and place of his birth and then under all that there's "R.S.D". I'm wondering if anyone knows what the "R.S.D." might mean? kind regards, Merv
When Mary previously asked about this census in 2005 the 'Abervale' place of birth for Mary HOOLEY was suggested to be Ebbw Vale, and advice was also given where to look for a Catholic baptism for a child born there. Hi List, I have a copy of a 1861 Census. No name of town of district written on top but think it might be Glamorganshire and the Town might be Cardiff. As under; Page 40 801 No. Street Name of Occupants age Employment where born 216 3 Henry Street William WILLIAMS Mar. 34 Lab Docks ? Cardiff Eleanor WILLIAMS wife 33 ??? The neighbours in 217 are my Grt Grandparents Thomas and Mary Ann Fitzgerald Hooley It seems that Eleanor Fitzgerald Williams is Mary Ann's sister. Now can anyone with a large magnifying glass, tell me where Eleanor and Mary Ann were born as shown on this Census please I cannot read it and would appreciate hearing from some kind person who might have better eyes than mine. I have always thought they were born in Ireland but looks different on this census and yet in the 1871 Census, Mary Ann is shown witih Thomas and family living at St Marys Parish, Cardiff at 5 Buzzard Street and it shows she is born in Ireland?? Hoping someone can help me with this puzzle. Many thanks for any help. Mary

Hello Helen, Coalbrook Vale was in Monmouthshire, a suburb of Nantyglo. This would tie in with the birthplace of the other sister as being Abervale, also in Monmouthshire. regards Mike Willing to have a look at original scan.
Hello Mary I have looked on Ancestry = Eleanor's birthplace has been transcribed as Coal Brook Vale, Devon - the word Devon on the original appears to have been added in a different hand however. The transcription for Mary Ann's birthplace is Abervale, Monmouthshire - the only word that is clear in all that (to my eyes) is Abervale. As for Eleanor, the location in the way it is written is at odds with everything else on the page - firstly, when a person is from Ireland, the country name is all that appears. When the location is Wales or England it is written county first, followed by the town ie "Glamorgan, Cardiff". That being said, I cannot decipher what is written in for Eleanor but that may simply be a case of my unfamiliarity with the area. Sorry, wish I could have been more help. I am willing to email the page to anyone who might have a better interpretation. Hello list I am looking for help with my Great Grandmother Jane RICHARDS born about 1869, in Merthyr Tydfil. I would like to find her in the 1871 census, and have had no success, as she wasn't with the rest of the family then. I wonder if she was sent to stay with a relative as at the time of the 1871 census her brother Edward was only 6 weeks old, and Howell's mother was staying with the family. I have the family in 1881 at Canal Row, 1891 and 1901 at Nightingale St and 1911 at Catherine Sq. Her parents were Howell RICHARDS 1842 and Ann REES 1843 ( another line of enquiry I need to pursue with the family is to follow up Ann and find out if she is related to David REES 1858 who she married!) Her siblings were Edward and William, with a half sister Anne from Howell's first marriage. I am unable to locate a birth for her but hoping that the 1871 census might narrow down the possibilities a little. Any help would be appreciated Thanks, Chris (Australia)
Hi Denis, I'm sorry I was not helpful. I think i misunderstood your writing "trying to establish the first Marriage" .As i had found a marriage for a William Watkin(s) to a Martha Davies in 1845. Lynne
Thanks Lynne for replying [ her reply below.] I spent a few days thinking about and looking at marriage transcripts on Findmypast and came across this one Watkin Williams wed Martha Lewis 11 Sept 1837 St John Cardiff could this be my relative with the names miss transcribed. She was from St George Super- Ely according to the census returns of 1851. Think I may be making progress at long last Cheers Denis Edwards Hi Denis, Looked at 1841 census, from that I could only find one possible. William Watkin to Ann Evans at Parish Church St Lythians. both of full age Ann from parish of St Lythians ,William from Parish of Radyr. William's father Edward. witnessed by Morgan Evans and Jane Evans.May 2nd 1841. Lynne
The newspapers should have a lot of accounts, just of the top of my head, the accounts I read made me think of the Black Death. So many people ill doctors and nurses couldn't keep up, burials were hard to keep up with. It is hard to imagine now just how bad it was. Mean time you can try this link http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/flu-how-britain-coped-in-the-1918-epidemic-511987.html Eliz Not Today and Not without a Fight (Anon) For all that has been, thanks. Civil Registration of Births came in on 1st July 1837 so for most people born after that you can order a copy of a birth certificate from the GRO. Registration was not compulsory until a while later, but a very large proportion of births were actually registered. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Civil_Regis.html has some links to more detail. This can be done directly using reputable credit and debit cards from https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp or if you wish to pay a lot extra, via one of the commercial sites like Ancestry. See http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Certificates.html about what is on certificates. Some Americans who do not like using credit cards online or find it difficult making payments in UK currency have ordered certificates using an agency based in USA which specialises in the service, and which is intermediate in price between direct ordering from GRO and using the commercial genealogy providers. I expect someone on the list can give you details off-list of someone they recommend. Before 1837 it is more difficult. Some baptism registers show the date of birth as well as the date of baptism. There are many books and articles available about how to research Family History in the UK before 1837. Bear in mind that not all records kept by families are 100% accurate. Some were written up years after the events, and relied on fallible memory. Some people were reluctant to reveal their birth year, or occasionally their marriage year, if correlation of marriage dates and birth dates of first offspring might have proved embarrassing.
