    3. Hello Jill and List, I note that you are researching a John  Jones of Cardiganshire.  My line is from John Jones Cardiganshire (Llanddewi Brefi)  but unfortunately  they are numerous in that area and the trick is to find which line I want.   I am researcing a John who was born about 1750 and was a gentleman of Coedmawr Llanddewi but after this John the family fortunes seem to have taken a bit of a nose dive! We could perhaps help you in your search if you could give us his possible date of birth and place he was born. Is there a particular name or occupation in the family that could distinguish this particular family?  I was sure I had mine when I found Periniah Jones, who had been my gt aunt's aunt who had described her and given me her name, which stuck in my mind. Also, I don't know when it became popular, or if it is even common in Wales, but my Welsh grandfather was always called Jack, rather than his given name of John. He was born in 1892. 3. Cilfrew/Cilffriw is a village near Aberdulais in the Blaenhonddan hamlet (= sub-division) of Cadoxton-juxta-Neath parish. Look at adjoining properties on successive censuses to work out whether it is likely that you are looking at the same building in each. Bryncaws farm may be found on Google maps with post code SA10 8NF . It is about 1 km north of the centre of Cilfrew. If you look at the coordinates 277500 200800 on www.old-maps.co.uk and look at the1884 1:10,560 map you will see Bryn-Caws Inn and Bryn-Rhos Cottage, both near Tabor chapel. Going back to Google maps and starting from Tabor Chapel (which you can recognise by its graveyard) I suspect that both premises are still in existence on a country road labelled as Oak View. There has been other research on this list about JONES of Cilfrew area of Cadoxton parish. This also involved Australia. Whilst trying to find my HOPKINS & JONES family I found the following which may be of help to somebody one day. 1851 Census for Cadoxton HO107; Piece 2464; Folio 345; Page 25 - Anna Jones, bottom of page. Anna has possibly stated that she was married on the original census return. But the enumerator has written "married very lightly and inserted the word "Query"and has written the following note which reads “John Wildback the supposed husband was prosecuted March 31st 1849 for Bigamy at Swansea Assizes”. 1. [GLA] New to the list - Jones & Hopkins help please
    2. Michael
    3. Hi all New to this list but subscribe to others. My cousins have asked for some help tracing their Paternal family roots. Their Paternal Grandmother was Caroline Charlotte HOPKINS born 1870, Ballarat, Australia. Her parents were Henry Taylor HOPKINS and Elizabeth JONES. They were married 18 June 1859 at the Ebenezer Chapel, Merthyr Tydfil. Henry T HOPKINS was the son of Thomas HOPKINS an Iron Borer and lived at Mill Street, Aberdare. And I can trace his line back. Elizabeth JONES was the daughter of John JONES deceased an iron Moulder of Plymouth Street, Merthyr Tydfil. The witnesses were James REES and Joannah Taylor EVANS (Henry's sister). Henry & Elizabeth emigrated to Australia. I can't find them in the 1861 census, so I am assuming they left before the census was taken. They had 4 children Joanna 1864 Ebenezer Owen 1866 Caroline Charlotte 1870 Mary Jane 1871 Henry Taylor HOPKINS died and Elizabeth and the children returned. In 1881 Elizabeth, Joannah and Caroline are at 20, Alexander Street, Neath. And Ebenezer and Mary are at Bryn Rose, Blaenhonddan. By the time we get to the 1911 census Elizabeth HOPKINS nee Jones now aged 75, and her daughter Mary who was born in Ballarat, are living at Bryncaws, Cilfrew, Neath. The head of the house is Mary REES aged 72 and the census states that they are sisters. Elizabeth and Mary put their place of birth as Bryncaws, Cilfrew, Neath. My problem is that I don't know when or where John Jones died. And I can't find Bryncaws, Cilfrew/Cilffriw in the 1841 census. In the 1841 and 1851 census I can find Bryncaws, Blaenhonddan with a JONES family and Mary and Elizabeth the right age, but the father is OWEN I've got no problem bringing the family forward, BUT I just can't trace the JONES family back. Can anybody help please? Many thanks Michael

    1. [GLA] Records of employment in South Wales collieries - Rhondda and Aberdare Valleys
    2. The Lewis family
    3. G'day List Haven't made a posting for a while. When I do it is usually asking for help and it is the case this time. I have been researching my late father-in-law with a view to writing a short biography of him for the family. He spent most of his working life either as a collier or as a repairman in the Rhondda and Aberdare valleys. I know where he worked in 1911 and in 1956 but not for how long. Where else he may have worked is unclear but most likely are the collieries in the Mid-Rhondda area. My wife doesn't know either. Is there an online resource that I can use to find out. And of course, any other collieries where he may have worked. I am certain there will be but those I have tried have led nowhere as they seem only to list books and other material that I have to consult on site mostly in Swansea. Living in Western Australia makes that a little difficult and we are not planning a trip any time soon. My request is simple to make but will probably not be able to be answered easily. Are there any online indices which list underground workers in the Rhondda and Aberdare valleys between 1910 and 1950? I look forward to some illuminatory replies to lighten my darkness. Yours in anticipation Ray Lewis Hazelmere Western Australia

    1. [GLA] Re 1861 Census
    2. Mary Mizzi
    3. Hi List, Many thanks to all the kind people who have helped me decipher the writing on the 1861 Census. Looks like I have to correct the birthplaces of my Grt Grandmother Mary Anne ((Fitzgerald) Hooley and Eleanor (Fitzgerald) Williams. I had been looking for their births in Ireland as shown in a lot of the Censuses, But their father Timothy Fitzgerald was shown in the 1841 Census of Mons. with the 2 girls but no mother so I am wondering if she might have died between 1836 and 1841. I have just found an entry for a Mary Elizabeth WILLIAMS b. 30 Dec 1835. Father William Williams and mother Eleanor Williams. Bit of a puzzle here as I have a record of Eleanor being b. in 1823 so could she be only 13 and married and having a child at this age? I think they put their ages down so as not to be too much older than their husbands ....happened in my own ancestors also. I have written to the Monmouthshire List for help with their birth dates and names of parents to confirm they were born there as shown in the 1861 Census. Hopefully, I can get all this info before I get too old to see? Many thanks again...this is a great list as I have said so many times before. Kind regards, Mary

    3. Hi List, just wondering if SKS could check out a couple newspapers for me please?   I am unsure what papers are available to Cardiff apart from the Western Times, but I am trying to trace an obituary of the above who died in February 1990, South Glamorgan the registration district states, but I am 95% certain that it was Cardiff.  Liam was born in 1928 so would have made him 62 years old. William would have been an unknown second-cousin and am trying to locate possible family relations in his and my tree. Regards, Michael McAllister
