Hi I just joined this list and was wondering if the people looking for Givens on this list are just in the US or hopefully are you looking for Givens from Scotland 1700 or 1800's. Thanks. Elizabeth

Hi, I'm new to the list and haven't seen any activity.... The following was also posted on the GIVEN-L. In searching my GIVEN ancestors I have also found the name recorded as GIVENS. I am working on extending my GIVEN line and find living cousins. I have some information but still looking for more. Does any of the following or the surname list below fit your family?? If so please e-mail me. My end of line is Josiah GIVEN, b about 1792 in Tyrone County, Ireland. He came to America in 1812 and married Jane GLENDENNIN (several spelling variations) in 1817 in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania. He died in Jan 1850 in Millersburg, Holmes, Ohio and Jane died about 1853 in Millersburg too.. Children: William (1819-1866) md Susan CROCO, lived in Wooster, Wayne, OH James (1821-????) md Mary WALKER, tracked to Cleveland Andrew (1823-1899) my ancestor md 1) Mary ANDERSON md 2) Hannah (DAVENPORT) Conyers. Does anyone have a William E. Givens who was a fatality of the Civil War? One source I have states William E. Givens was killed in the Civil War. My William Givens was in Company D, 24th Mississippi, infantry, out of Lowndes County Mississippi, known as the Caledonia Rifles. The roster shown on the Lowndes County , Mississippi, website at rootsweb states those who died in the war would have a star beside the name, but there is not a star beside William E. Givens name, so there is a mix up somewhere in the information. My William Givens was married to Margaret J. Davis and had three children, Silvestor, Louisa, and Samuel. I know nothing about these children. Willam was a brother to Zenas, Newton, James R. and sister Mary M. William E. Givens parents were Samuel Givens and Cynthia Milligan Givens. Zenas lived to be 93 years , died in Scotland, Van Buren, County ,Arkansas and is buried in the Foster Cemetery in Scotland, Arkansas, in 1927. James Givens is thought to be the one found on land records in Van Buren County, Arkansas on land near that of Zenas Givens, so these two were probably brothers, unable to locate any further information on James as to a marriage or children, death or burial place. This Givens family was found on the 1850, Lowndes County Mississippi census. I believe Samuel is buried in the Egger Cemetery in Lowndes, County Mississippi, as well as his grandson, Samuel, son of William E. Givens, as the dates on the headstones match the dates for my Samuel and grandson Samuel. As for the other Givens buried they I haven't discovered their connection to mine , if indeed there is one. My Samuel Givens, b. 1794, served in the War of 1812, enlisting in Ray, (Rhea)Washington County, Tennessee, was living in Lowndes county Mississippi, when he first filed for an 1812 pension, his wife Cynthia had died by the time he filed for his pension, as he is listed as a widower. Thanks, for any information anyone might contribute. Sandra
Thanks for getting the ball rolling. Right now I don't know enough to know if it helpd, but maybe someday I'll find that other Samuel. Gwen
This is a list of some of the Givens that are buried in the Egger Cemetery in Lowndes, county, Mississippi. I thought it might help some of you to locate a burial place for some of your Givens. Sylvestor Givens Samuel Givens Dec. 23, 1846 May 12, 1794 Sept. 1, 1927 March 19, 1889 W.E. Givens E.N. Givens March 22, 1825 Aug. 15, 1852 Sept. 14, 1884 May 22, 1906 Leonard Givens No dates given W.E.N. Givens Nov. 30, 1863 Feb. 16, 1890 I am unable to verify if any of these fit into my Givens line, but think that possibly, Samuel and Sylvestor, might be grandfather and grandson. One of the W.E. Givens could possibly be a son of Samuel. Just thought it might help someone, we seem to be finding very little. Sandra
Sandra, we are not alone! JC Bodfish mentions the Gibbins spelling. In the 1850 MS census some of the spellings were Givan, Givans, Givens, Givin and Givvins. Givan had the given name Samuel. I believe he will be my next attempt at finding Jane H Boucher, even though he was in Lauderdale Co. Yes, and I am still trying to find a Samuel Givens who married Jane H Boucher in Lowndes Co on Sept 14, 1848, recorded in Book 3 Page 174. I know this is not a figment of my imagination or something brought on by heat stroke. My gg grandfather was William H. Givens born oct. 4, 1843 in Tennessee. He married Oct. 3, 1865 in Brenham, Texas to martha Annett Thomason (or Thompson). William died April 12, 1925 in Mangum, Oklahoma. I am searching for his parents. I have information for other Givens but I am not sure which branch William fits into to make the connection. I would appreciate any information I can find. Thank you. Deborah Goodman

John Ray Givens was the son of James Givens out of Virginia. John R. and his sons John and Samuel settled in Benton Co. Arkansas. Peggy Givens has researched this family. You can find her on GIVENS FAMILY GENEALOGY FORUM answering queries there. She has a web page on this but I don't remember where. Good Luck!!
