Your message was really interesting and got me to thinking........ I'm sending you an outline of my Gilmore's. I have very little on the Gilmores than what's in this outline. My grgrgrandmother was Agnes Gilmore who married John A. Vance in New Hanover Co. NC in 1849. The reason I have her listed in my family file as Agnes M. Gilmore is because when she married John A. Vance, the marriage certificate said "Agnes Minga". We've proven that Agnes was a Gilmore though as her mother, Willa Brown Gilmore was living with she and John Vance in 1850 in Giles CO. TN. The other family researchers have paid little attention to the Minga name on the marriage certificate but I've always wondered about it. It really does sound Indian. I suppose there was no great need to research it because as she was married before....there were no children. (that we know of anyway) You'll notice that Agnes' grgrandmother was a McKinne (y). Her lineage goes back to Barnabee McKinne b. ca 1673 in Isle of Wight, VA and d. bef 1740 in Edgecomb Co. NC. Alot has been written about him and he had a very large family. I would like to hear more from you about your Gilmore's and this Indian connection. Have any other of you Gilmore researchers ever heard the name Minga??
