Marilyn I don't have a good picture of Grant, but his son Leslie, my grandfather, looked Indian. The family said it was through his father. There was a picture of Grant's mothe Sarah Lamb Gilmore on my great grandmother's wall. You could tell she had Indian features and my great aunt said she was Cherokee. Her parents were Willis Lamb and Sarah Pennington. Willis' family moved from Surry Co. NC to the area of Paint Rock River in Jackson Co. AL before 1820. There are no records in Surry Co. and they were apparently there only a short time. Sarah Pennington was also born in Surry Co. NC. Her parents Joseph Pennington and Grace Martindale had come from Patrick Co. VA. The owner of a Native American store in Indiana told me that several Penningtons he has met in Indiana told him they were Cherokee. The Darnell list is hosted by Awiusdi Darnell, a Cherokee. There is apparently a Cherokee branch of that family from NC. Some of the wives in the Darnell family must have been Cherokee. Cathy's parent's were Benjamin Darnell and Polly Henson. The Henson came from VA to NC to KY. There are also some Cherokees named Henson. I don't have any proof on any of these lines, so that is why the information on Joseph Gilmore is interesting. My Cherokee ancestors were even better at avoiding documentation than the caucasian ones. I am also tracing Cherokee names of Bryant, Briant, Hicks, Holmes, Jackson, Chisholm, and Brown. Someone on the Cherokee-L list said she was told "Your ancestors would lie about not being Cherokee but they wouldn't lie about being Cherokee." The information in my family goes back before the time it was "popular" to have Native American ancestry. Anyhow, while trying to find my Indian ancestors I have sure turned up a lot of interesting information on all of them.
