In 1826 was licensed to preach as a local preacher and preached often in Clark, Marengo and Wilcox Cos., Ala. He was a Methodist, also had regular appointments at times at Missionary Baptist Churches were there was no regular pastor. One instance was the New Hope Baptist Church which was founded in 1824 in the home of Willie Newton, in Clark Co., Ala.( Stephen's brother m Nancy Newton, dgtr. of Willie Newton.) In 1857 he moved to Choctaw Corners, Clark Co.,Ala. within 5 miles of Grove Hill. He never owned a lave. Of his 5 sons in the CSA, 4 died in action. Stephen m.
