>From Helen Austin, Decatur, AL To researchers of the descendants of James Gillespie of Blount, TN, Morgan and Lawrence Co, AL for the period between 1790-1920. I have some information today which is dated 1848 and 1849 from the Tax Assessment lists of Lawrence Co, AL. The information is about the assessed worth of goods for James, and his two eldest sons John and Henry GILLESPIE and some of his neighbors are named. Secondly there is information about the marriage of Roxie Gillespie which I did not have. She was a daughter of the John Gillespie who was the eldest son of James of Lawrence Co, AL. However, she married in Decatur, Morgan Co. ================ !TAX RECORD: Lawrence Co, AL; Dist #4, 1848; p 215; James Gillespie; 280 acres land NE qr. S2. T8, R7W, NW 1/4, SEqr. S2. E 1/2 SW qr. Henry Gillespie. Next to George Aday and A. J. Shuffield. Note that his father, James died before the tax list of 1849 and does not appear. Henry was not married and was not a head of a household in 1848 and does not appear for that year. Henry married Margaret Aday the daughter of George W. Aday his neighbor. Perhaps William W. Sheffield is a son of A. J. Shuffield a neighbor of James Gillespie, and Aday, Nichols, Woodard families. William married Lucy Ann Gillespie b ca 1831, a daughter of James Richard Gillespie. The marriage was 14 Oct 1849 in Lawrence Co, AL and may have been after the tax assessment date. ============================== !MARRIAGE: New Decatur Advertiser; Aug 1, 1902; In E. H.
