>From Helen Austin of Decatur, AL [email protected] In my last message to the Gillespie researchers searching for the parents of James GILLESPIE b ca 1790-1793- d 1849 Lawrence Co,AL, m 1818 Morgan/Cotaco Co,AL to Lucy JOHNSON, I showed two soldiers info for James and John. Today I have new information and hope you also have more to add to information about the members of the GILLESPIE/ HOUSTON/MONTGOMERY/COWAN families who enlisted in the E. TN Militia on the same day, Sep 23, 1813. I wish I knew more about what happened in Maryville, TN that day. I said, James GILLESPIE, War of 1812 Veteran Was in Major J. P. H. Porter's Cavalry Squadron of East TN Militia. He enlisted in Blount Co, TN, Maryville Sep 23 1813- discharged Dec 23, 1813 at Maryville.; His service was as a Pvt. in Capt. Cowan't Co, of TN Militia. He had dark hair, and eyes, and weighed about 125 lb. According to his wife's application for bounty land he was only married once. He died Oct 7, 1849. I asked about a John who enlisted in the same unit that day. Did you find anything? This is what I found in White's Pensions Applications War of 1812. Two possible Johns are listed. 1. John GILESPIE, rank CORNET (whatever that is?) enlisted 23 Sep 1813 In Major James Porters Squadron , Cavalry, Co. Capt Samuel Cowan. (from microfilm index of soldiers in TN War of 1812). 2. John Gillespie, same unit, same dates (could be the same one as this was in the pensions book) wife Jane (Kilbourn) 3rd wife. Pension # WC-34693, married 16 Oct 1823, Blount Co, TN. soldier died 14 Mar 1842, widow died 8 Sep 1882 Limestone Co, TX; served in Corwinis Tn or Cowan's TN Militia; widow lived Monroe Co, TN and Limestone Co, TX; First wife was a Houston, 2nd wife was Nancy Gallagher. COULD THIS BE THE FATHER OF JAMES in the first paragraph? Unless he married about 1790, perhaps not. WHEN DID HE MARRY PATSIE HOUSTON? This John must be the son of William and Isabella Houston GILLESPIE and a brother to the Capt James in #(3) below. HAVE ANY OF YOU SENT OFF FOR THIS PENSION OR DO YOU HAVE SERVICE RECORDS FOR THESE MEN? 3. Capt. James Gillespie, ( who died in Blount Co, TN) Enlisted Sept 23, 1813, Regt of Col Sam Wear, Co. Capt. James Gillespie of E. Tn Vol, Infantry. He is on the microfilm and also the pension book. White's book has, He md. Peggy Houston first, 2. Jane Gallagher, 3. Patsy W. Wallace 8-12-1823; a Capt in Col Wear's 1st Regt. E. TN; enlisted 23 Sep 1813, disc 12-31, 1813; bur at Gillespie Fam. Cem near Louisville, Blount Co, TN. This is not new to most of you, but I am just repeating the source of the data. What is interesting to me is that he enlisted the same day and the James and John above. 4. Isaac GILLESPIE, Pvt. Enlisted 23 Sep 1813 i Col Sam Wear's Co, Capt John Child's E. TN Vol Inf. From microfilm of index of service records, soldiers in TN. 5. Jacob GILLESPIE , Pvt. Enlisted the next day, 24 Sep 1813 in Col John Alcorn's Co., Capt John Baskerville, Vol Inf. he was also a pvt 10 Dec 1812 in Col John Coffee, Capt John Baskerville, TN Cavalry. From same microfilm. If some of you can tell me which families that these soldiers belong in , I would appreciate it. I know that Capt James mentioned in (3) above was b 17 Jun 1777 probably in Augusta , VA and d 17 Nov 1848 and was the son of William GILLESPIE b ca 1737 Ulster, Ireland and Isabella HOUSTON b ca 1722 who was the dau of John HOUSTON, immigrant from Ulster. I know that it is said that this Capt James had a son named James Harvey Gillespie b ca 1819 probably in Blount, TN, a son of Jane Gallagher, so he is probably not the father of our James Gillespie b ca 1790 who fought in the same Squadron of soldiers. But the Capt could be his uncle. Another family member is surely: Robert HOUSTON (1790-1840 Blount Co, TN) Md. Margaret Cunningham 1811 (1792-1843); Pvt and Srgt, Capt Samuel Cowan's Co.Maj James P.H. Porter's Regt; 9-23-1813 to 12-23-1813; W D & T S A; New Providence Pres. Cem, Maryville, Blount Co, TN. Source for this and for the Capt James Gillespie burial site is , SOLDIERS OF THE WAR OF 1812 BURIED IN TN, Names abstracted from Col. David Henley's "Wastebook Regular and Militia Personnel for Period 1793-1798 in SW Territory (TN) ; compiled by Mary Hardin McCowan ; copy in Huntsville, AL Library. all for now Helen
