July 18, 1907 A shooting affray last Saturday near Ryan, in Fleming Co., just over the lewis Co. line. Floyd and Isaac Stacey, brother, and their cousin, John Stacey, were riding along the road when they met Sam and John Reed, brothers aand cousins of the Staceys riding in the opposite direction. It is believed that the Reeds opened fire on the Staceys shooting John Stacey through the leg and Floyd Stacey through the hand and thigh. Floyd Stacey returned fire and shot Same Reed through the heart and John Reed just under the right eye, killing both instantly. Both bodies were buried in the same grave last Sunday. The Stacey boys came to Vanceburg and stayed all night at the Farmer's Hostel and left Sunday morning for parts unknown. Sam Reed was married and left a wife and six children. Deaths: Emma Rena (Anthon) Burchett wife of Dr. J. F. Burchett, born May 22, 1875, died July 5, 1907 married Dr. Burchett May 11, 1904. She left a daughter two years old. United with the Presbyterian Chruch in 1896. Died of an appendicitis. Mrs. mary Rummans, widow of Wm. Rumans, died at the home of her son, Clarence, in Lexington, and her remains brought here for burial, July 7. Mrs. Roch Ruggles died at her home in Winchester, Ky., July 16 and buried at St. Paul, KY July 18. Mrs. William McEldowney, of Valley, was called to Soldier lat Saturday to attend the funeral of her sister, Mrs. Cadwallader, who was killed by lightning the previous day.
