    1. Info from A.D. Gillespie's journal
    2. Just came across these dates in Alexander Dumars Gillespie's journal. Alexander Dumars Gillespie - born 10 October 1822 David Gillespie born 10 April 1825 Sarah Gillespie born 19 May 1828 Thomas Gillespie Born April 30, 1838 This is a list of his siblings. They lived at Big Bend on the Shenango River, outside Greenville, Pennsylvania. The farm is now under a large dam. Does anyone know who Sarah married ? Thomas was named after his grandfather, Thomas, whose stone says he was born 1799 in Donegal and moved to Big Bend, Mercer County 1806. His large tombstone (in four pieces) is in the Bigler Cemetary on Mercer Road outside Greenville. A. D. was a successful lawyer who had attended Allegheny College (Meadville, Pa.) for two years and then a college/univ. in Canada (sorry that the name slips my mind - could be St. Michael's) One of his sons, Eugene Pierce Gillespie, Atty., was a Congressman who is buried in the Shenango Valley Cemetary in Greenville ( Pa.) on top of the first hill on the left after you enter the cemetary. Other family members are buried there - sorry I do not have a list of them. Will list them when I next get to town, but it may be months (we are 200 miles away in Columbus, Ohio). During the Civil War, farm labor was scarce and cattle prices were low in that area (he had a large number of cattle). He writes that one son, Alfred, wanted to go to California so he raised the money and sent him. Does anyone know of Alfred and his line ? I have nothing on him. I know that E.P. paid $300 to another man to take his place in the army, but don't know about the others. Three hundred dollars would pay off a lot of farm debt for whoever was devoted enough to their family to go in his stead ! I hope they didn't rue the day ! Thanks to all the family members who put their info in this website - it is fascinating and very helpful !
