He was born in Cherokee County, N.C., and was a police officer for San Diego State University. He was retired from the Navy and served during World War II. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Survivors include his sister, Nora Katherine Vance of Florida; and brothers, Dan Gillespie of Kensington, Md., and John Gillespie of Silver Spring, Md.
