Hi Fellow Rooters! I am new to the list, so I thought I would add my names to the list. My grandmother was born a Gillespie, Helen Marie Jan 15, 1901 in Barry, Pike Co IL. William Edward was the son of William Edward Gillespie, born July 21, 1845 in IL & Altha Ann Childers of KY. I have very little information regarding this family. Is there any connection out there? Thanks so much, K M McHugh [email protected]

Shelia.. In checking I find that the Paul Gillespie I have is a James (born c. 1864) who had a son Paul C .. nothing further on him.. there is also a Paul Castleberry Gillespie (born c. 1826) whose maternal grandfather was Paul Castleberry who fought in the Rev War.. Paul C was married to Mary Jane Bramlett.. So I guess I can't help you after all.. have you checked if these could be Abbeville Gillespie's .. that Parmelia Patterson sounds like Abbeville.. -----Original Message----- From: Sheila Phillips <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, January 14, 1999 10:07 PM Subject: [GILLESPIE-L] GILLISPIE >I have been searching for information on my great grandfather, Paul >Christopher Gillispie, Jr. for quite some time. Hello, My name is Jim Gillaspie, and my ancestors were from Belmont County, Ohio. I am looking for more information as to where they were from originally, etc. Thanks! Jim
Hi Listers, My wife is a descendant of Sir Robert Rollo Gillespie. I am hoping to find further descendants and more information about his family. A shortened biography of him appears below. I would appreciate any assistance you may be able to give. Thanks. Julian van der Veer ------------------ Gillespie, Sir Robert Rollo 1766-1814, major-general, of an old Scottish family which acquired property in Downshire early in the eighteenth century, was only child of Robert Gillespie of Comber, co. Down, where he was born on 21 Jan. 1766. The father was married thrice, twice without issue. Robert was child of the third marriage with a sister of James Bailie of Innisharrie, co. Down, member for Hillsborough in the Irish House of Commons. Robert went to a private school at Kensington, known as Norland House, and afterwards to the Rev. Mr. Tookey of Exning, near Newmarket, to prepare for Cambridge. A public monument by Chantrey, dated 1820, is in St. Paul's Cathedral. A cenotaph is in Calcutta Cathedral and a commemorative column at his native place, Comber. As a commanding officer, Gillespie inspred his men with admiring confidence. He was a keen sportsman; among his recorded feats was the killing of a tiger in the open on Bangalore racecourse. ----------------------------
I am trying to locate any vitals on my ggg grandfather Benjamin GILLESPIE. He was counted in the 1840 and 1850 census in Bangor, ME. His widow, Sara, was appointed guardian of three minor children in 1860. His children were James, Jospeh and a daughter. Later Joseph lived in Burlington, ME Any help would be greatly appreciated. Don Sylvester
I just realized that I had not sent in my family. I descend from: Thomas and Naomi Thompson Gillespie George and Mary Graham Gillespie Thomas L. "The Hatter" and Catherine Beard Gillespie James and Christiana "Christine" Gillespie Hurt William and Mary Ann Hurt McEwen Charles and Virginia Francis McEwen McCracken William Brown and Martha Mays McCracken Boyd and Lela Mae McCracken Thomas Larry and Barbara Swoboda Thomas I believe that all of us know about the first two generations, so I'll touch a little on the third genetation, Thomas L. and Catherine. Thomas was born on July 27, 1776 in Rowan Co., NC where he was raised while his father, grandfather and uncles fought in the Rev. War. Catherine was the daughter of John Lewis Beard and his wife Christina Snapp. John immigrated from Germany in 1749 and Christina's parents immigrated from Alsace in 1733 to Frederick Co., VA, four years before Catherine's birth in 1737. All Lutherans. Around 1796 Thomas was sent to Salisbury where he met Catherine and married on August 24, 1796. Thomas' grandparents died the following December and Thomas inherited land on the Duck River. Catherine's father was already dead and her mother died in 1799. It appears that they must have moved shortly afterwards, because all of their children were born in TN including Christiana who was born 1799-1800. They stayed in the Maury/Marshall Co. TN area while all their older children moved to Western TN. Later the younger children moved to Johnson Co., IL. Their son George and his wife Martha Swain both died in the early 1840's and their two children came to live with Thomas and Catherine who were now in their mid to late 60's. In 1852 at 76 years of age, Thomas rode on horseback from Marshall Co., Tn to Johnson Co., IL to visit his younger children. (He may have went through Henderson Co., TN where the olders ones were, but it is unknown that he did so.) A year or so later, Thomas, Catherine and their two grandchildren moved to Johnson Co., IL by overland teams. Thomas died on Oct. 10, 1855 and Catherine died on Sept. 7, 1857 and are both buried in the Johnson Co., IL cemetery. Thomas was a farmer his whole life, but always kept a hat shop on his farm and made and sold hats to his neighbors. From this he was called, "Tom the Hatter" to disquinsh him from all the other Thomas'. Larry

Hello Gillespie researchers, I am seeking information regarding my ggg grandmother Hanna Gillespie who was born in 1828 in Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Her parents were born in Ireland. She married Peter McMahon on Sept 22, 1845 and they immediately moved up to Mercer Co. PA. There are a lot of Gillespies in that area, but I do not think they are necessarily related to the family I am looking for. There is a Margaret Gillespie who is related, as she participated in a baptism (Catholic) of one of their children. I'd like to find out the names and anything else about her parents. Hi I'm researching GILLESPIE in NY starting around 1849. Anyoneelse? Kathi
I'm looking for the parents and additional siblings of Ann Gillespie, born 1800 in SC. I don't known where in SC as my birth place information comes from the 1850 census of Yalobusha Co., MS. She married John Conner (middle initial likely "G"), most likely in SC, where all their children were born. The family moved from SC to MS sometime between 1842 and 1850. Children include: James R., b. abt 1829 Benjamin, b. abt 1831 John, b. abt 1833 Lucresha (Loucretia), b. abt 1837 Frederick, b. abt 1840 Catherine Charity, b. about 1842 Ann Gillespie Conner had a brother C. Gillespie who resided in Hernando Desoto Co., MS in the 1860s and 1870s and possibly earlier. This information comes from letters we have written by C. Gillespie to Ann Gillespie Conner. C. Gillespie had five sons, all of whom had died by 1875. The last to die was William, who died in June 1875. I don't have names for any of the others. C. Gillespie also had two daughters. Margaret P. Gillespie married Michael Quinland in Pontotoc Co., MS, 1 Jan 1850. Margaret died November 1875. The other daughter Harriette Gillespie married James H. Baker, 1872 in Desoto Co., MS. A John Cornelius Gillespie appears to be a close relative of Ann and C., but is not C.'s son. Possibly a nephew. John Cornelius Gillespie married Mary Frances Mackey in 1872. She died and he married her sister Sarah Alice Mackey in 1879. The Mackeys were from Yalobusha Co., MS. John C. Gillespie & family resided in Desoto Co., MS. There are a few other people alluded to in C. Gillespie's letters, but their names are not given in full and it is likely though not certain that they are family. If anyone recognizes my Gillespies I would like to hear from you. AEG [email protected]

I have been searching for information on my great grandfather, Paul Christopher Gillispie, Jr. for quite some time. He was born 11/13/1882 supposedly in Anderson, SC. His father was Paul Christopher Gillispie, Sr., and his mother was Permelia Patterson. I believe he was the oldest son of this marriage, and as far as I know had one brother named either Ocie or the initials were O.C. His mother died, and Paul, Sr. remarried. All I know is what was handed down through the family. It is said that this second marriage produced several more children. One may have been named John. Paul, Jr. kept in touch with either a brother or nephew in Florida he called "Buster". On 6/27/1899 he married Dora Etta Hunnicutt. They were living in Anderson Co., SC on the 1910 census. Dora died 4/20/1918. He married Lillie West on 6/27/1918. He died in Sylacauga, Alabama in December, 1964. I am trying to trace his siblings, and I would like to find his grandparents names. Is there anyone out there who can help me knock down this brick wall? Thank you, Sheila
