    3. At this time the information that I have on Thomas and Virginia's children is: Sally married a Brock, Jenny married a Craighead, Ann married a Callison and Peggy married William Black McNutt. The two sons' names were Thomas and Samuel. These are the names that were taken from Capt. Thomas' will. A book that was written many years later states that two of Thomas' daughters married sons of Robert Craighead (William and Thomas) but the will only lists one with the name of Craighead. Hope this has been of some help. 3. My apologies to Connie and the rest of the list for not making myself clear in my original request. It was a long day. Capt. Thomas Gillespie was born around 1755 and his will was probated the First Monday of January, 1924. He and his wife Virginia Vance Gillespie had four daughters and two sons. I am seeking information on both Thomas and Virginia. I have some information on them after they arrived in East Tennessee mainly about their connections to the Presbyterian Church. Thomas was instrumental in the establishing of two of the first Presbyterian churches in that area. He was also on the first Board of Trustees for Blount College which later became known as the University of Tennessee. -----Original Message----- >Searching for the ancestry of Capt. 1. [GILLESPIE-L] James Gillespie of Louisville,TN,Presby.Minister
    2. It was said that James Richard Gillespie b ca 1790-1793, d 1849 Lawrence Co, AL was a Presbyterian Minister. He enlisted in the U.S.Army in 1814 in Maryville, Blount Co, TN. He married 9 Sep 1818, in Morgan (Cotaco) Co, N AL to Lucy Johnson. I saw this in the history of Blount County: As an educational center Maryville has long been prominent. In 1806 the Legislature, under the act establishing county academies, appointed Gideon BLACKBURN, John MONTGOMERY, John LOWRY (merchant), Joseph B. LAPSLEY and Andrew KENNEDY trustees for Porter Academy in Blount County, to whom were afterward added James GILLESPIE, JR., John LOWRY (attorney), James HOUSTON, Sr., Alexander McGHEE, James TURK and Thomas HENDERSON. I am wondering if our particular James GILLESPIE was realted to this James Gillespie, Jr. or James Houston and if he was educated at Maryville College.? How would I find out? Does Maryville College have an archive of student records going back to before 1818? I know, this message probably needs to go to Blount Co. But I am hoping that some of you are related to the GILLESPIE/HOUSTON clan of Blount Co, TN? Helen Austin [email protected] Decatur, AL

    2. Richard Gillespie, DC
    3. Hi List. Many of you may be interested in this link. It shows the Gillespie Migration from 1850 to present. Rick Gillespie Hamrich Software offers a neat little search feature that shows you the distribution of any of 50,000 surnames by state. Just type the surname, choose the date range you want to search if other than the 1990 Census, and click the Display button. You see a United States map color-coded to show how frequently the surname occurs in that population. If a name is very prevalent in a state--occurring among 1 in 100 people--the state is shown in red. Blue shades show states in which names occur less frequently. http://www.hamrick.com/names/
