I love all the activity I am seeing on the list. I still have not connected my Gillespie with anyone. Mary Gillespie was born about 1757 either in Ireland or unknown. She married about 1774 Randolph LaForce who was born about 1752 in Goochland Co. VA. They are found in Botetourt Co. VA on the 1775 and 1777 taxlist then Fayette Co. KY 1787 on the Census and 1787 taxlist. Randolph was sometimes known as Randol or Ranald also the last name may be spelled La Force, Leforce or LeeForce. He has been confused with his brother Rene LaForce III. Children of Randolph and Mary: Samuel m. Margery Montgomery George m. Sarah Blair Judith Ann m. James Mulberry Gillespie (Galispy) m. Nancy Short m Sarah Rice Unk daughter Unk son Trephenz Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.
Searching for information on John Gillespie (b. Donegal c. 1807) and Mary McAdams, daughter of Owen McAdams and Catherine Gallagher (b. Donegal c. 1809). Children all born in Donegal: Edward (1832), James (1833), Catherine (1836), John (1838), Mary (1840), Patrick (1843) and Michael (1846). Probably emmigrated with the family to Scotland during the famine. Edward married in Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire, Scotland, in 1858 Susan Walls (b. Derry 1834), daughter of John Walls and Susan Connery. Michael, my g-grandfather was born in October 1861. Three brothers John (1860-1860), Patrick (1864) and John (1869) were born. A daughter or possibly step-daughter Mary born in (1852) is also recorded in Scottish Census records. Michael emmigrated to the US. anywhere between 1873/1880/1885 depending on which Census is at hand. Married in Philadelphia to Bridget O'Connell (b. Ireland 1864), daughter of Jeremiah O'Connell, on April 24, 1889. Nine children: Susan (1890), Jeremiah (1891), Edward (1893), Mary (1895), stillborn daughter (1896), James (1897), Margaret (1899), Frances (1901) and Dorothy (1903).
>From Helen Austin, [email protected] To researchers of GILLESPIE, James Richard b ca 1790-1793 of Blount Co, TN, Morgan and Lawrence Co, AL I went north across the TN River bridge today to Limestone Co, and the Houston Memorial Library in Athens, AL. It is about 13 miles from Decatur. I was in search of the HOUSTON family papers as they relate to GILLESPIE families and hoped this library would have something. One block from the courthouse at 101 N. Houston St. in downtown Athens, the old white clapboard Greek Revival style house was bought by George Smith HOUSTON in 1845. He was b in Franklin TN Jan 17 1811 and grew up in Lauderdale Co, AL and became a lawyer in 1831. He married Mary I. Beauty in 1835 in Athens. Second he married Ellen Irvine of Florence, AL. Although George was a noted stateman, a U.S. Rep and Governor of AL for two terms, his papers and family history are not in the genealogy room of his old house which was donated by the family as a library in 1920. However, I did find a good reference for the BLOUNT Co. TN families. You may have seen the family history, JOHN AND ESTHER HOUSTON MONTGOMERY 1719-1973, compiled and pub by Beulah Henry Anderson, Creed Montgomery, J. Esther Montgomer, Dr. John Montgomery and Margaret Montgomery Vawter in 1974. WHEW! Printed by Brazos Printing, Maryville, TN . In additon to the family history of the HOUSTONs, CALLOWAYS and MONTGOMERYs it also has some of the GILLESPIE connections as mentioned in the book by Lillian Gillespie, GILLESPIES OF BLOUNT CO, TN. What is so interesting to me and perhaps to you is that the MONTGOMERY families seemed to migrate right along with the GILLESPIE and HOUSTON families, coming from Ireland to Philadelphia, and then after PA, to Augusta Co, VA. They were also Presbyterian and there are many quotes and data refs. No bibliography though. Also I found a chapter in TENNESSEE COUSINS by Ray S. Worth about BLOUNT CO, TN families that has several pages on GILLESPIE, HOUSTON, WALLACE, interweavings. Although I did not have time to study all the refs, this library has a three volume set of RECORDS OF AUGUSTA CO, VA. I think someone knew I was coming! It was neat to sit on antique chairs in the front bedroom of the Houston house, looking out over the portico to the old magnolia tree that blocked the view of traffic and look at the stories of the old families. I copied 20 pages from the book and will study them to glean any GILLESPIE, CALLOWAY HOUSTON goodies that might relate to your progenitor. I will post the gleanings. Now, Flint GILLESPIE of Lawrence Co, AL says that the CALLOWAY family was Lucy JOHNSTON's mother's family. So perhaps we should look into a connection with her family. Do we know where Henry JOHNSON/JOHNSTON, Rev War Soldier lived before he was in Morgan Co, AL in 1818 ?
Bill, Thanks for the info and note. Sorry, I don't have much info on my William GILLESPIE other than his married to Martha/Patsy HUNDLEY in 1822 Albemarle Co., VA. and his children. William evidently was married before, but I have not found for certain to whom. I found a marriage of a William Gillespie to a Mary OWEN/S in abt. 1806 Albemarle, but I'm not sure it is the same William. William or William Abner GILLESPIE had a son Henry Gillespie who married a sister (Mildred Hundley) of his step-mother's. They were daughters of Nehemiah Hundley and Mildred (Martin?). I have other children's names, but don't have here at work. I'll get back later tonight from home. Hi Karen: I have a Charles Gillespie, head of household 1830 in Botetourt Co. Va. He came to this Country with a brother, William Gillespie. Charles married Mary Armstrong who came to this country from Ireland to marry Charles. They had three daughters, Mary born 1799, Peggy born 1803, and Adline born 1816. Adline married my ancestor John Brickey Lee. Charles died before 1850 and is said to be buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Va. The 1850 census for Botetourt Co. Va. shows Mary Gillespie living with John B. Lee and Adline Gillespie Lee. Peggy Gillespie married Daniel Lee, John Brickey Lee's brother. Peggy Gillespie Lee is also living in the John B. Lee household. Do you have any more information that would tie your William to my Charles? Thanks and good luck. For information: This just came from another list. It is marriage records for Weakley Co., Tennessee. Groom: J. W. Gillespie and Bride: M. A. Gardner were married Jan. 12, 1876. Hope that it might help with a piece of the puzzle for someone. Glenda Cook Melson Descendant of Capt. Thomas Gillespie (b. 17550 and Margaret Virginia Vance Gillespie and settled in "Irish Bottom" or "Limestone Area" in East Tennessee (Knox Co.). Looking for their ancestry. eir ancestry.
I am looking for information regarding Judith Gillespie who was born approximately 1944. Judith was adopted by the Gillespie family at approximately the age of 3 or 4. The Gillespies lived on a farm. Judith had one brother and one sister, both younger than she. She was approximately 1-2 years older than one sibling and 4-5 years older than the other. The Gillespie family was of the Methodist faith. Judith completed high school and attended beauty school. She entered the US Army where she worked in a clerical position and was discharged in 1965 or perhaps early 1966. She was stationed at Ft. Eustis in Virginia before her discharge. She was known to have lived in the Norfolk, VA area in 1965-66. This is all the information I have on Judith Gillespie. If anyone who is researching the Gillespie genealogy comes across information that may fit this profile, I will appreciate hearing from you. If you have anyone in your own extended family that may fit this profile, I will appreciate hearing from you. If you are Judith Gillespie and this sounds at all familiar, please contact me. I have some very important information for you. Thank you. K. O'Connor [email protected]

Reply to Tom Steinthal My ggrandfather, Hugh Gillespie, immigrated through NY about the same time, settled in Buck Mountain, (Carbon County) Pennsylvania. Father - William Gillespie. Mother - Mary? Georgia Brown
I am trying to locate an information regarding relations to PATRICK GILLESPIE. He was born in Ireland and evidently came to NY around 1850 with several brothers. According to family lore, the brothers all settled in different cities. Patrick worked at Grand Central terminal in NY in the 1860s and 1870s. Thanks, Tom Steinthal
To Larry, I had just sent a message to Billie Steeley about my line of Gillespies which went to Johnson Co. Illinois, and then up popped your message. I have spent most of my time trying to follow the line before it got to Illinois. I am related to so many lines in Johnson Co. that I just haven't really tackled that county yet. I would love to share anything I have, and it looks like you might be able to fill in some holes for me. ---> >I am a "double" Gillespie! I missed the first part of this query, but have some suggestions that you might want to check into. I have several Samuel Gillespie's as follows: 1- Samuel Gillespie b. 1844-1845 TN. He is the son of John Morgan Gillespie and his wife Neoma Thompson Gillespie who were married 12/1/1832 in Maury Co., TN. They moved to Johnson Co., IL from Williamson Co., TN about 1855. John is the son of George Gillespie Jr and Neoma the dau. of Thomas L. and Catherine Beard Gillespie (my line). So John and Neoma were 1st cousins. 2- Samuel Henderson Gillespie b. 3/10/1845 the son of David Alexander and Anna Biggers Gillespie. David was the son of Issac. 3-Samuel Watson Gillespie b. 12/23/1839 in SC. He was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Elba Hall Gillespie, the son of Thomas and Flora McCoy Gillespie. # 1 Would be my pick to look into because I know that he was in IL. The wifes name sure is interesting, Neoma. I have two Gillespie boys that married Johnson's. George Washington, but that was somewhat later and he stayed in TN. And Francis who married Mary Ann "Polly" Johnson. But that too was to late, Feb 8, 1863, but it was in Johnson Co., IL. Francis was also the son of John Morgan. I realize this is not much help, but the names and places looked so close, I had to drop you a line. Good luck, and if you every make the connection let me know. Thomas L. was the grandson of Thomas and Naomi Thompson Gillespie, and Catherine was the daughter of John Lewis and Christina Snapp Beard. Lots of Rowan Co., NC history in there.
