    1. Re: [GILLESPIE-L] Texas Ranger Gillespie
    2. Rick; I saw your message on the Gillspie line and, since I am the editor of a military history journal, your information regarding the Texas Rangers was interesting. Have you given any thought to writing an article about the early Texas Rangers, their uniforms, arms, equipment and accomplishments? I suspect the Texas State Library might have images of Walker and Gillespie that you might use if you think you have the makings of an author. Best regards, Dave Sullivan Editor Military Collector and Historian The Journal of the Company of Military Historians Fall meeting, by the way, is at San Antonio!

    2. Richard Gillespie, DC
    3. Billie Thanks so much for the info. Samuel Huston Gillespie must be my grandfather. It all fits together as far as I can tell. The story that I have is that Samuel immigrated to Texas but went to Illinois to be with his dying brother and my grandfather, Lantie (this may be a nickname) was born there. They eventually made it back to Texas where they died in the eary 1900s. If you have any further info on Samuel I would really appreciate it. 2. To Suzanne, The only wills which I have transcriptions for are the GILLESPIES of the book THE GILLESPYS FROM SCOTLAND TO BLOUNT CO, TN. They are: James Gillespy, ( b ca 1700-1715) will dated 5 Day Sep 1768 Of Augusta Co, VA, wife Jennet, ch. John, James, William, Agnus, Elizabeth. Proved 20 Oct 1769 ===== JOHN GILLESPY (son of James and Jennet (b Kells,Scotland 1734) will 6 Feb 1796 Blount Co, Southwest Territory (later TN) He died Mar 16, 1796. wife Elizabeth. ch Jean, Agnes, Elizabeth, William, Nancy Ann, John Susannah, Alexander, Margaret, Sarah, James(decd) dau Elizabeth, Agnes. ======= The will of William GILLESPIE son of JAmes and Jennet, b ca 1737 Scotland or Ireland will dated 19 Oct 1825, filed 25 Dec 1826 Blount Co, TN. This is transcribed in the book also, but I would like to be able to see the microfilm or the actual book record, This is the Wm. who married Isabella Houston Henderson. I believe it is possible that he is the grandfather of James Richard GILLESPIE of Lawrence Co, AL who I am researching. It is said that it took 20 years to sell all the lands (until 1846?) ======= John GILLESPIE ( b 1774) son of Wm. and Isabella d 14 Mar 1842 with estate in Louisville, TN, bur in Holston College Cemetery. This is the will I would most like to see. His son James is suppposed to have been co-executor with widow of John (Jane)) SO IF YOU SEE THIS WILL OR THE PROBATE RECORDS FOR 1842-1845 THIS IS WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR. What am I looking for? Anything with a James with a middle name Richard GILLESPIE. Anything that will link a James of AL with the Blount Co, families. Dates? He was b ca 1790-1793 probably in TN , Enlisted in army in Maryville in 1814, was in Blount Co. until about 1817. Then came to Morgan Co, AL 1818-1835. Then to Lawrence Co, AL by 1840 and died in 1849 LC, AL. Thanks, Helen Austin [email protected]

    2. Read your posting. Seems you have done a lot of research on the Gillespie family. I am stuck with one Gillespie. Almiria Virginia Gillespie. She married Daniel James McIntosh in 1869 in TN. This is all the info I have on her except the children she had by McIntosh. They moved to Altus, AR right after they were married. There is were they raised their family. Daniel McIntosh died in 1908 in Altus, AR but have no death date on Almiria. Would be very interested if you may have some idea on Almiria. I believe she was born in TN but have no proof. thanks Barbara

    2. To Dan and other Gillespie researchers who are looking for early Morgan Co, AL families who may connect to Blount Co, TN >From Helen Austin, [email protected] Re: Morgan Co, AL marriage records : The Matthew C. Houston who was a county clerk and mentioned in connection with James GILLESPIE in the 1818-1821 records of Cotaco (Morgan) Co, AL married to Martha L. Gillespie on 28 Jan 1830. Charles W. Peters, Judge of the County Court performed the marriage. Book A- p 162. Now, I see several Matthew Houstons in the book, GILLESPIES OF BLOUNT CO, TN. I am still not sure which family this particular MATTHEW C. HOUSTON belongs to?? Also, if I could find which GILLESPIE family this Martha belongs to, it might help to identify the family for James GILLESPIE b 1790-1793 in VA or TN. OTHER GILLESPIES of the marriage book are: Joseph H. GILLESPIE to Sarah Lay, 26 Oct 1826 by Thos. Sharp, JP (A-105) Nancy GILLESPIE to James SHARP 3 Sep 1829 by John Sharp, JP (A-155) William F. GILLESPIE to Sarah P. Lane, Lic. 24 Dec 1833 (A-244) --------- To Dan: I also see your Samuel C. GILLESPIE to Eliza Jane Morrow 19 Aug 1875 by Alex Penland, MG, Brides permission by W. F. Stovall, Guardian (C2-176) ======= Note: since our James (Richard) GILLESPIE is the only GILLESPIE family on the 1830 census of Morgan Co, AL, I am very interested in the other GILLESPIE families. - I will continue to look at the other Morgan Co, records to try to determine what year James Richard GILLESPIE removed to Lawrence Co, AL. Certainly it was before 1840 when he appears on that census.

    3. This is in response to Richard Gillespie in San Marcos, TX Your Gillespies must be connected to mine, but after searching a bit tonight I can't connect the dots. John Morgan Gillespie and Naomi Thompson were 1st cousins who married in Maury Co. TN in 1825 and are buried in Johnson Co IL. The surnames of FARRIS, JOHNSON, and HOUSE that you mentioned are connected to them in Johnson Co. IL. There are quite a few Samuel Gillespies in this line. Our Gillespies also go into Williamson Co. TN and I found more than one Samuel there, as well. This line also traveled further north in Illinois. I'll do some more searching and get back to you. And believe me you aren't even close to being the last surviving Gillespie! I trip over them every where I go! Connie McKenzie, great-great-great grand-daughter of John Morgan and Neomi Gillespie

Born of an old Scottish family which acquired property in Downshire early in the 18th century, was the only child of Robert Gillespie of Comber co. Down, where he was born on 21 Jan. 1766. The father was married 3 times 2 without issue. Robert was the child of the third marriage with a sister of James Bailie of Innisharrie, co. 3. Hi, Mine are fairly close to yours. My earliest was Robert Gillespie b. abt 1799 in Falkirk (they say), he was a widower when he married Jean Melrose in 1842 in Falkirk. This Gillespie line stayed in that area, including Larbert and Loanhead, until about 1905 at which time they came to Hamilton, Ontario and worked in the steel foundry. Most of the family is still there. A few have moved to the Detroit area. One of the original children of this family to move to Hamilton was my grandfather. He was the ONLY one that left that area for So. Calif. He died in 1951, his wife in 1953 and his son, my father, in 1963. I was born in 1952 and through the magic of the internet I located all the Gillespie family in Canada last year and found out that there were over 300 descendants of that original family and I wasn't the "only one left" after all! Its great to have second cousins who can fill in all the blanks! If you would like, you can visit my website. The first page shows the Gillespie family photo just after their immigration to Canada. A widow and her children. My grandfather is in the kilt in the lower left. 3. Dear Connie: I can't recall if I have talked to you directly before. There has been so much info on the Gillespie List and it has been hard for me to follow all of the threads. I hope, thanks to you, that we are related. This may take a while to explain so bear with me. My grandfather was Lantie Miller Gillespie. He had a brother John and we had very little knowledge of the Gillespie Family beyond that. John had given my cousin some oral history when he was quite old and he either had bad info or a bad memory because there seems to be some confusion over names and dates and this has really thrown us off in our search of our ancestry. Even grandpa Lantie is a mystery. My cousin just told me that Lantie is not even his real first name and no one ever knew what it was!! Our records showed Lantie's father as Sam House Gillespie, Jr., born 2 Sept. 1985 somewhere in Tennessee. He married Eliza Pressila Farris on or about 1878 presumably in Tenn. His father is down as being Sam House Gillespie, Sr. who married in about 1839 to Naomia Johnson in Tenn. You can't imagine how excited I was when I saw your post to Larry about Samuel Huston Gillespie. House is so close to Huston! And the birthdate of 1 Sept, 1845 is so close to what you have and you have him moving to Bastrop, Tx which is where the old homeplace used to be. I really think (or am I just wishing too hard!) this is a match. Also, your Samuel's dad is John Morgan Gillespie which is not even close to Sam Sr. but perhaps our records were totally wrong. And our naomia Johnson is very close sounding to Neoma Thompson. I really think Uncle John's memory was wrong. Does any of this sound likely to you? I also noticed the Farris name in your history. Could Eliza be part of the same Farris line? Here is the sequence of history as we know it: Samuel and a brother (sorry, have no names) moved from Tennessee. Samuel went to Texas and the brother went to Illinois, near Peoria. AT some later time the brothers family in Illinois contacted Samuel and told him that his brother was dieing and he sould come quick to see him before his demise. Samuel packed up the family and went to Illinois and ended up staying a long time after the brother had a miraculous recovery. My grandfather Lantie was born in Illinois, Don't know if his brother John was born there or in Texas. They stayed until Lantie and John were teens. At that point they left home on their own and headed back to the farm in Texas. I don't know if Samuel and Eliza went with them to Texas or came later but records show that Samuel died on 7 Dec, 1917 in Marlin Texas and Eliza died on 24 Oct 1925 in Marlin also. So there you have it. All my life the Gillespie ancestry has been such a mystery. I can't tell you how excited I am over the fact that we may have solved some of the pieces of the puzzle. I would really appreciate your opinion on this and if you have any further info I would really appreciate it. I don't have Family Tree Maker yet but will be getting it soon. I look forward to sharing more with you. I am leaving town tonite on business and won't be answering any email till monday but please feel free to write back. My dad always said he was the last surviving Gillespie and it excites me to no end to know there may be tons of relatives remaining. Rick Gillespie, DC San Marcos, TX

    2. Fred and Wanda, Thank you for you quick response. I am afraid we do not have a connection at this time. My James and Judith will not fit there. James Mulberry born about 1784 died about 1809 Scott Co. KY married Judith Ann LeForce born 1793 Clark Co. KY died about 1837. Judith's mother was the Gillespie in this line, she married Randolph LaForce. Pat
