Hi Group, I have'nt listed this in a while, so: I'm looking for anyone who has any connections to an Alexander Gifford, born around 1775 place unknown, died Baltimore Maryland in 1821. He married a Mary Johnson, place and date unknown. His parents and place of birth are unkown. Due to family naming patterns, his fathers name may of been Thomas Gifford. For four generations they repeat the same given names for children. Thomas, Alexander, Robert, James, Hugh, William, Elizabeth, Jane, and Maria/Mary. Alexander first shows up in Baltimore in 1806. There are no records of him in Baltimore or Maryland before that time. Mary Gifford nee Johnson's parents were probably named William and Elizabeth Johnson. Alex is believed to have been a carpenter by trade. Two of his son's were builders/architect's, one the High Constable of Baltimore, and one owned a pottery store. The others occupations were unknown. We are scotch-irish by family lore, coming here after someone lost their head in a dispute with british crown and the rest of the family got out of Dodge so to speak. Who came here and when is not known. Some of his decendants wind up in New York, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Utah, with some remaining in Baltimore. Any hints, help, suggestions, loose connections, questions, or unknown named children in your lines that disappear and fit in with the 1775 possible date of birth, please contact me.
