He was born ca 1615 prob. in England and it is possible that he was the son of Phillip Gifford and his wife Mary Turner Gifford; another source states that he may have been the son of an Anthi Gifford of Dublin Ireland. William and his family were Quakers; he was a tailor by trade. William married twice 1) Patience Russell and 2) Mary Mills, dau of John Mills and his wife Sarah (----). *see note below. William Gifford and his wife Mary Mills were married 16 July 1683. William's children were: Possibly by 1st wife Patience Russell John - 1642-1708 marr. Elishua Crow(ell) Patience - 1644-1675 marr.
