This seems a good time to bring up my Canadian Gifford. Possibly born in Nova Scotia @1836, and possibly named William. He married Margaret Wagoner and their first son, Alfred Daniel was born in 1861 in Iowa. Their second son, Frank Llewellyn was born in 1863 in Grass Valley, California. Margaret remarried to F.D. Nelson in 1869, so we know Mr. Gifford was dead by then. I have been unable to locate him anywhere in California records and tend to believe that he died back in Iowa, and Margaret came to California with her parents and siblings @ 1863-1865.
