Hello, I am a Gifford. I am a descendant of Mary Ann Gifford. She was born in Massachusetts 11 Dec. 1803. She was married in 1819 in Frederick, Maryland, to Lt. Henry Calvin Stowell. Born to them were Joanna, b 1821, Anna Maey, b1823, and Lydia A. b 1825. Widowed in Dec 1825, Mary was married 1831 to (2) John A. Richardson b. 1803 in PA. Born to them were Charles, 1835, Elizabeth, b. 1838, and Frances, b 1839. Mary Ann Gifford was buried in the Mt. Olivet in Frederick, Maryland in 1856. Her funeral card says that she was born in Massachsusetts, but the 1850 census return says that she was born in New Jersey. I am unable to locate Mary's parents, but Genealogist Mrs. Sylvia Gifford claimed Mary to be daughter of Alexander Gifford of Baltimore, Maryland. Mary herself lived in Baltimore near the Alexander Gifford family's home when she became a widow. Mrs. Gifford felt that Mary was not mentioned in father's or mother's will because she changed her religion and / or locality -- from Baltimore to Frederick. I would appreciate hearing more about your Gifford line because yours was "the contemporary" of my Mary Ann Gifford.
