    1. [GIFFORD-L] William Gifford (c. 1756-August 15, 1846)
    2. Thomas D. Riney
    3. Hi all, I have been trying for some time to verify that the father of William Gifford, soldier of Revolutionary War, was born to a Captain Gideon Gifford. At this point I wonder if the source is incorrect and hope that someone can prove or disprove the linkage. Here is what I have We have established that Willam fought in the Revolutionary and later migrated to Greenfield Twp., Erie Co., Pa. We do not know any of his siblings and the only purported data regarding his parents is given in a set of notes of unknown authorship that are in possession of the descendants of William Gifford that live in Erie Co., Pa.: "Captain Gideon Gifford is the earliest ancestral father of whom we have a definite record. He married Miss _____ at Pawlett, Vermont and there were born to them sons and daughters. He removed with his family from Pawlett, Vermont to Pittstown, Renselaer Co., New York." His son William Gifford served as a private in the American Revolutionary War; William is the only child of Captain Gideon Gifford of which we have a record. William married Miss Elizabeth ______, and they there were born to them eleven children and they are the branch of Captain Gideon Gifford's descendants which are the subject of this compilation." So far all our efforts to find a trace of Capt. Gideon Gifford have failed. I can find Gideon Giffords in Pawlett, Vt., but not of the right age. At this point I am wondering if William's father was someone else? Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3. For those of you stumbling around trying to place found, previously missing, pieces together as I am, here is a correction of information derived from LDS records. My search started with the ancestry of my gggrandmother, Emma Elizabeth Gifford. Emma was born in New Corydon, Jay County, Indiana on March 29, 1850 to Joshua Gifford, Jr. and Phebe. Emma married Samuel T. Sutton in West Line, Cass County, Missouri on October 14, 1874. Emma and Samuel had six children: 1872 John W. 1875 Carrie Mae (my ggrandmother) 1879 Charles H. 1882 Elmer D. 1884 Elzina Iona 1890 Lulu (Lou) Emma and Samuel lived their entired married life in Louisburg, Kansas where they operated a restaurant named the 'Star Restaurant'. The lot their house occupied is now a creek-fed natural area in the southern part of South Louisburg. Both Emma and Samuel are buried in the Old Louisburg Cemetery. The LDS records had reported Emma being from Franklin, Indiana, born in 1855 to Thomas and Catherine Gifford. After we travelled to Franklin and started reading the old newspapers we discovered the LDS error. For your records: The Emma from Franklin was indeed born in 1855 to Thomas and Catherine. To update the available information you can add that Catherine's maiden name was Case and that Thomas was a wealthy physician who practiced mainly in and around Indianapolis rather than in Franklin. There are few mentions of his medical activities in Franklin. Thomas Gifford spent much of his time buying surrounding property in Franklin and eventually built the home known locally as the Gifford Mansion where many Franklin County social functions took place. Thomas and Catherine's daughter, Emma, was a bit of a socialite and became a school teacher at the age of 22 while still in Franklin. By this time we were certain this wasn't OUR Emma and discontinued any further research there in Franklin. We hope this info will be of some use to another Gifford researchers. It just goes to show that just because someone else has done the research for you, it still might not be right. Because of our ability to travel fulltime in our motor coach we were able to spend the time in the exact area to verify what we needed. Plus it's fun to retrace steps, even if they are the wrong ones in Franklin, Indiana. Now, if anyone has info on Joshua Gifford, Jr. (or Sr.) we would appreciate it. Joshua was born in Columbia County, Canaan TWP, NY. During research in Tulsa, Oklahoma last month we could only find a couple of references to a Joshua Gifford, Jr. in Canaan, Columbia County, NY. >From the church records of Saint Thomas Luthern Church, 1711-1905 reads: "1826, March 8 (2.00) Married Mr. Joshua Gifford, Jr., to Miss Betsey Woodruff, Canaan. In presence of Mrs. Olive, Abrm. & Cornelius Vanderpool & others." Other research into Betsey shows her to be a bit of a flake of the times as she is admitted to and excommunicated from other churches left and right. We're hoping that if this is our Joshua, Jr. that the marriage didn't last long and Joshua, Jr. later married Phebe. The 1840 New York Census lists Joshua, Jr. with 5 people in the household, agriculture being the trade. It also lists Joshua (Sr.?) Gifford with 4 people and farming, Enos Gifford with 4 people and farming, and Ephraim Gifford with 3 people and farming. This is all we have; sounds like a lot, but we need the definite connection between our Emma Elizabeth Gifford and the Joshua Gifford, Jr. from tis 1840 NY Census. So, who out there has the answer? Thanks, Tom and Denise Jenkins Searching for: Gifford, Ireland, Irland, Sutton, Valentine, Jenkins, Van Flaesbeeck, Volkertszen

    3. Dear Gordon & other GIFFORDs, I had such hopes for the Gifford-Allison connection in the cemetary. But I remember now your tale about the rotweiler....LOL. My grandmother Mary Ellen GIFFORD McMackin (b 1875 Lake Pleasant PA) used to go back "home" to PA to visit her family. I do know that her brother John GIFFORD went to Indiana to farm, and grew onions, and she may have brought her mother to live with her in Lake County OH, so it's possible there are some GIFFORDs buried where there their offspring wound up living. Thanks for trying, Gordon! Susan McMackin Reynolds Rehoboth DE

    3. I finally reached the man who owns the property by Lake Pleasant . When I asked him for permission to go up in his cemetary , he told me to go right a head . He was very friendly and quite talkative . He explained that he didn't remember Allison or Gifford , but then many of the stones had become unreadable . He did remember that there were Owens and Williams . He also stated that he knew where a couple of more such cemetaries were and told me if I brang a map he'd show me where they . I thanked him and told him I would be there soon , just to be sure . Excitedly I hung up the phone , knowing that the search now has a few more options . My wife burst my bubble , when she asked me how I was planning to handle the Rotweiler . Oh well you can't expect me handle all the details . Last weekend I took a walk into the Espey Cemetary on the other side of Lake Pleasant . No luck . I also checked out 2 very old cemetaries in Little Hope , about 4 miles from Middlebrook . No luck either . Gordon Walk _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 1. [GIFFORD-L] ROOTSWEB MONTHLY REPORT
    2. The GARRETT'S
    3. Subject: RootsWeb in February -- 1,000,000+ Hits Per Day Resent-Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 15:58:50 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: rootsweb-members@rootsweb.com Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 15:43:46 -0800 From: Brian Leverich <leverich@rootsweb.com> To: rootsweb-members@rootsweb.com CC: "Dr. Brian Leverich" <leverich@rootsweb.com> This note is going to tell you that RootsWeb set a new record level of service to the genealogical community last month, but a more important message that I'd like to convey first is just how important your support has been. RootsWeb wouldn't be here without you. In February, without your support we couldn't have purchased a generator to keep the servers up during the El Nino storms, a new search engine server for the USGenWeb and mailing list archives, and a new server to host Cyndi Howells' Website and the USGenWeb query systems. Your continued support is essential to us: just to keep up with demand, in the next few weeks we're going to have to upgrade the main Web server, upgrade the mail hub server, and start preparing to add a third list server. All that costs money. And beyond those inescapable upgrades, we really want to be building a kitty for buying genealogical datasets and bringing more new services online for the whole community. If you can spread the word and help us find more Members, Sponsors, and Donors, you'll be helping us keep up with demand and bring new data and services online. *** AND NOW FOR THE REPORT *** February was an incredible month: El Nino storms repeatedly caused us to lose power, and I wound up having to 4-wheel- drive off the mountain in a snowstorm to find and buy a generator to keep RootsWeb online. Because of our batteries and our generator, we were down only minutes even though the power was off for days. Also, Cyndi Howells' Website moved to RootsWeb right in the middle of the storms and the USGenWeb query system needed more CPU cycles and bandwidth, so we added a server and load balanced our T1 connections to the Internet right in the midst of all the snowfalls and power outages. We had about 11% absolute growth during just the month of February, but that's deceptively low because February is a short month. Our actual *daily* load increased about 20%: o 29,372,613 Web files (27,751,946 in Jan) from 2,488 Websites (2,400 in Jan). - 8,602,112 were HTML pages (not images or cgi-bin) (8,308,561 in Jan). - 3,446,096 were cgi-bin database searches and such. (3,574,701 in Jan). - 17,248,967 were GIFs (15,850,655) or JPEGs (1,398,312) (15,784,790 in Jan were GIFs (14,529,204) or JPEGs (1,255,586). o 644,950 FTP file downloads from the USGenWeb Archives and the ROOTS-L Library (618,762 in Jan). o Thanks to a neat hack by Tim Pierce, we know we shipped about 82,150,000 pieces of mail (88,649,000 in Jan) pieces of mail to the 3,050+ (2,600 in Jan) mailing lists we host. (The 82 million is probably low; we had to archive a significant amount of mail before the count because of a disk space crunch on one of the mail servers ... ) o 60,000 alt.g and s.g.* Usenet News articles to hosts on three continents (same as Jan). o Approximately 505,361,000,000 bytes in total (451,786,000,000 in Jan). And that's what RootsWeb did in February. Let me thank you once again for supporting RootsWeb -- none of this would be available to the community without your help, and your continuing support can help us grow and provide even more service to the community. The two sides of the family had never really talked to each other and there was some bad blood. But thanks to the list, we've found our new relatives. My grandmother has been in touch with her first cousin and we're looking forward to much more communication. So, I'd like to thank whoever started up the list. Thanks, Andy

    2. Timothy D. Cook
    3. Greetings Andy; I am a descendant of a Wyatt Simson GIFFORD. He was born either in 1859 or 1860 somewhere in KY. He died 13 Aug 1928 in Soldier, KY. He has been a big dead end for me but for some reason I just know that there is more on this fellow. Here is a bit of what I know: Descendants of Wyatt Simson Gifford Generation One 1. Wyatt Simson1 GIFFORD was born on 7 July 1859 (Alice Margaret Gifford Perander Correspondence, n.d, Timothy David COOK, Busby, Montana.); he was born in May 1860 at Kentucky (1900 United States Federal Census, Morehead, Rowan Co, Kentucky; dwelling 347, family 347.); he and Hell?n CARREL obtained a marriage license on 13 April 1887 at Morehead, Rowan Co, Kentucky, Name on marriage bond is W.S. Gifford. Bondsman on the certificate is A.H. Gifford (possibly the father of W.S. Gifford?) (Rowan County Court Clerk marriage records, Morehead, Kentucky, n.d., Book 1, page 126, Timothy David COOK, Busby, Montana.); he married Samantha Florence SALYERS, daughter of James H. SALYER and Margaret DEAN, on 6 October 1889 (Gifford, A. M., Correspondence.); he died on 13 August 1928 at Soldier, Carter Co, Kentucky, at age 69 The death certificate is a delayed certificate filed six months after the death. There is no information on the record other than the date and place of death (Kentucky Bureau of Vital Statistics Death Certificate, n.d,). He was a farmer. He and Samantha Florence SALYERS appeared on the census of 22 June 1900 at Morehead, Rowan Co, Kentucky (1900 U.S. Census, Morehead, Rowan Co, Kentucky; dwelling 347, family 347.). Hell?n Carrel died circa 1888 (estimate of date.). The only known child of Wyatt Simson1 GIFFORD and Hell?n CARREL was: i. Pearl Ethel2 GIFFORD was born in May 1888 at Kentucky (1900 U.S. Census, Morehead, Rowan Co, Kentucky; dwelling 347, family 347.); she was born on 14 June 1888 (Gifford, A. M., Correspondence.). Samantha Florence Salyers was also known as Symantha. She was born on 12 April 1872 at Scott Co, Kentucky (ibid, for date.) (Kentucky Bureau of Vital Statistics, ,for place of birth, death certificate of Mrs. Florence Gifford.). She was born in April 1874 at Kentucky (1900 U.S. Census, Morehead, Rowan Co, Kentucky; dwelling 347, family 347.). She died on 17 May 1924 at Louisville, Jefferson Co, Kentucky, at age 52 (Kentucky Bureau of Vital Statistics, death certificate of Mrs. Florence Gifford.). She was buried on 18 May 1924 at Enterprise, Carter Co, Kentucky (Kentucky Bureau of Vital Statistics.). The seven known children of Wyatt Simson1 GIFFORD and Samantha Florence SALYERS were as follows: i. Prichard Wilson2 GIFFORD was born on 18 July 1890 (Gifford, A. M., Correspondence.); he died on 4 April 1891(ibid.). ii. Mamie Violet GIFFORD was born on 7 March 1893 (ibid.). 2. iii. Howard Earl GIFFORD, born 28 August 1895; married Bertha (--?--). 3. iv. Carl Crosley GIFFORD, born 24 August 1898 at Morehead, Rowan Co, Kentucky; married Sadie Ruth THORNBURG. (My g-grandfather.) v. Fredric Alenmore GIFFORD was born on 16 March 1901 (ibid.); he died on 21 August 1902 at age 1 (ibid.). vi. Lester Clyde GIFFORD was born on 21 July 1903 (ibid.); he died on 14 July 1904 (ibid.). vii. Alene Jewell GIFFORD was born on 24 November 1906; she died on 5 November 1909 at age 2 (ibid.). I would love to see what you have. I agree with this unusual of a first name there is sure to be a connection. > Date: Sat, 21 Mar 1998 10:28:51 -0500 (EST) > From: Andy Gammill <agammill@freenet.columbus.oh.us> > To: GIFFORD-L@rootsweb.com > Cc: Gifford-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GIFFORD-L] Wyatt Gifford > Does anyone have any information on a Wyatt Gifford. 3. Does anyone have any information on a Wyatt Gifford. He lived in Kentucky and Ohio. We believe he was born in Kentucky in the 1850s or 1860s, and he died in a state hospital there in the 1930s. With the uncommon first name, I don't imagine there would be two separate families with Wyatts, so I'd appreciate a reponse from anyone who knows anything. 1. Re: [GIFFORD-L] Gifford file
    2. Steven Reff
    3. Thanks, I'll fix file. Asa Gifford was born in Herkimer, NY in 1800. He had 5 children: Abel, James, Hezikiah,Louise and Harriet. Abel had 2 children Carrie Louisa and Charles. Carrie had 2 and Charles had 11. Most of family history I have is from Illinois. If you have any names from late 1800s I'll try to cross reference. Typically, I don't accept attached files anyway for fear of a virus. I am a big chicken I guess. I would love to know about your wife's family to see if I am connected. Sincerely your possible cousin, Judy in KY
