Dear Kathy I am researching Maria Gifford who, on the 1861 and 1871 Census' for Handsworrth, Staffordshire, UK , stated that she was born in Londonderry, IRL c.1800-1810. I have no idea who her parents were. She left Ireland and was married to my GGGfather James Blair and living in Nova Scotia by 1824. Whether she married prior to emigrating is unknown. James and Maria had four children that I know of: Robert Gifford Blair (my GGfather) who emigrated to Australia James Robert Blair born c.1824 in Nova Scotia. Died Calcutta, India 1850 Rebecca Blair died c.1834 Maria Blair - and there may have been others. When her husband James died she married Joseph Smith who was manager at Albion Mines, Nova Scotia. They lived in Amherst, NS until c.1852 when they moved to Handsworth, Staffordshire, uk. Maria died c. 1886. She was highly religious and raised her children similarly. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and safe 1999 Kindest Regards Ron Blair 3 Lamport Lane Brandy Creek 3820 Australia ---------- > From: Kathy McClung <rmcclung@sprintmail.com> > To: GIFFORD-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GIFFORD-L] Bridget Gifford, Rev. I am researching Bridget Gifford who lived in Ballylusky (Ballynoe), County Cork. She married Michael Morrison. They had a daughter Elizabeth who was born in 1859, another daughter, Bridget and 2 sons: James and John. There may have been more children that we do not know of. We just know of the ones that immigrated to America. Bridget Gifford died in County Cork, Ireland but we do not know when. A "Rev. William Gifford" has come up in my research. He may be a relative. We are not sure as of yet. He is listed in the 1848-1864 Griffith Valuation as residing in Ballyvodock West in Cork. If anyone has ANY information at all, please eamil me. Thank you very much. Kathy
Just a note to let everyone know I'm going out of town for Thanksgiving. I'll be leaving early Wednesday morning for Amherst, VA and will be returning Friday evening. I will not have access to a computer while away so I'll check my mail before I leave and as soon as possible when I return. In the meantime, I hope all of you have a wonderful TURKEY DAY! Does anyone have information on Stephen Gifford. Per New England Heads page 93, he was an original proprietor of Norwich CT in 1659 and was born in England in 1641. I am trying to determine who his parents were and where in England he was born. I know the lineage in the USA per Harry Gifford's book: Gifford Geneaology 1626 - 1896. John Gifford
my research has not found a whole lot about William. The New England Directory of Early Citizens (that may not be the exact name--records are not handy so I can check it) identifies William as coming to Barnstable in 1654 and that he was a bricklayer. If you go to the LDS Family History Center near you and look on the Ancestral File on the computer, you will find a line of ancestry for William dating back to the fourth or fifth century, going through a cousin of William the Conqueror back to a king of Finland. Unfortunately, other genealogists that I've corresponded with me tell me that solid proof has never been found for William's parentage in England (evidently there's some confusion about whether Phillip was his father or grandfather), so I'm not sure how accurate it is. I'm still verifying the information further down the line on my ancestors, so I haven't gotten that far as yet. I'm searching for any information on Eleanor GIFFORD, who married Stephen SHIPMAN 1808 @ Shelby Co, KY. Don't know when or where she was born, and the only clue to a sib or father is the finding that a James GIFFORD signed her marriage certificate, there in Kentucky in 1808. There was not an indication whether James was a brother or father, or ? Eleanor and her husband migrated North to Sullivan Co, Indiana for a short time then the last place I can find them is in Crawford Co, IL (near Hardinville, IL), where Stephen died in 1849. It appears Eleanor was still alive in 1849, but she doesn't show up on any census or other papers written after Stephen died, nor do we find evidence of where she is buried or where she died. Please help me. -- Thank you & sincerely, Allan Griffith, # 1 Jodi Lane, Bloomington, IL, USA 61701 home phone: 309-829-2063, if no answer try 309-828-2059 most reliable email: magriff@bigfoot.com alternates if above doesn't work: magriff@davesworld.net OR magrif@pol.net Personal HomePage: http://www.bigfoot.com/~magriff/ PEG HomePage: http://homepage.davesworld.net/~magriff
