Gifford is believed to be the grandfather of Frank Gifford, the football player. Carrie Blanche Gifford is my Dad's mother, my Grandma. My Grandma always said the Giffords originally came from Ireland. I'm working on the Frank L. Gifford line for info as to his and Alfred's father. Alfred had a stroke and died at age 57. Frank L. kept a saloon in Bakersfield, CA and I'm hoping to find some more info that way. Frank Gifford, the football player was born in Bakersfield, CA in 1925. Let me know if anybody finds a link to this info! I have the Alfred Gifford family Bible. Patty Mulder PMulder749@aol.com http://members.aol.com/PMulder749/wanted.html Patty's Most Wanted!
Patty, Thanks for the information. If I have any luck in researching my Gifford line, I will pass on the information to you. Thanks for your help. If you come up with any "Ireland" information regarding your Gifford line, please keep me in mind. Are there any County Cork Giffords out there? I am researching the Gifford name with County Cork roots. Thanks. Kathy
Good question. I do not know where they were married, my grandmothers book doesn't say. However, Bernice Arline Lake was born in Hart, Oceana Co., MI. At some point, and my mother doesn't know when, the family moved to Benton Harbor, Berrien Co., MI. I also know that Jennie, Samuel and Bernice are all buried at Crystal Springs Cemetary. I wrote to the cemetary asking for information on all three, but have not received a reply. I also offered to reimburse them for their work. Thanks for any help provided. Re. Robin Thackabary's request: A family tree for the Devon Giffords (Giffords of Halsbury) is in J. L. Vivian's The Visitations of the County of Devon pages 396 - 403. The tree starts with Osbert de Bolbec and goes through the late 1800s. I photocopied this years ago in the Boston Public Library. However, I don't see a Samuel Gifford in this tree. Some other sources: 1) Wescote, A View of Devonshire - Boston Public Library (BPL) pgs 627, 628. 2) Tuckett, Devonshire Pedigrees - BPL several pages. 3) Worthy, Devonshire Wills BPL pg 92. 4) Colby, Visitations of Devon. 5) Burkes Landed Gentry, pgs 2-8 Brightly. 6) Williams B., Ancient Westcounty Families and Their Armorial Bearings. 7) Worthy, Charles, Devonshire Parishes -- 28 families, 8) Roger Granville, Abstracts of the Existing Transcripts 1596-1644, 9) George Wrottelsey, The Giffards, William Salt Society Collections, (pgs 12, 19-44)New Ser. v., 1902; + The Ancestor, iii. 223-8 John Gifford ----- Original Message ----- From: Robin Thackaberry <rthackaberry@hotmail.com> To: <GIFFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 1998 6:47 AM Subject: [GIFFORD-L] GIFFORDS OF Devon >Is there anybody who has any information at all about the GIFFORDs of >Devon? Hello, All; Perhaps not directly in answer to Robin Thackaberry of Perth, WA, I can offer the following excerpt from approximately 500 years of medieval GIFFORDs. (Alas, none in Devon.) Osberne de Bolebec, Lord of Longueville, was born in Normandy before 1028. He married Avelina. Osberne went to England with William in 1066. William rewarded with land those who had helped him secure the throne of England. Osberne was given land at Brimpsfield, Gloucestershire. Osberne Gyffarde (son of Osberne and Avelina) was born at Brimpsfield, and died about 1086. (Sorry, I don't know why he took the name, but it was fairly common to do so in those days.) Elias Giffard III, (second great grandson of Osberne) married Maude Fitz Robert Fitz Harding, bringing Berkeley Castle into the family. Sir John Giffard (sixth great grandson of Osberne) was born at Twyford, Berkshire, and was a Knight of the Shire. Thus begins a long line of Knights of Berkshire, most of whom were named John. I lose the Gifford line with Amy, (14th great granddaughter of Osberne) who was born around 1485 or 1490, also at Twyford. The Giffords were related by marriage to (among others) such powerful medieval English families as de BOCLAND, de CLIFFORD, le STRANGE, and VAUX. If anyone is interested in the missing generations, I can provide that information. Sorry Robin, not a single Gifford in Devon do I have. :^( But maybe this branch will be interesting to someone. Is there anybody who has any information at all about the GIFFORDs of Devon? I have traced my branch back to the Mary Tavy area where they were living in the middle of the last century. (My ancestor was Samuel Fice GIFFORD). I understand that there is a history of the family in Devon that goes back hundreds of years. Is there a GIFFORD expert who can help? Perhaps someone could give me some sources I could explore. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
