I'm searching for the Giffords of South New Jersey who settled in the Little Egg Harbor Township area, there was a spot called Giffordtown right near Tuckertown. Can anyone tell me where to look for this information? Thanks. Hi I only joined this list a short time ago. I am not a Gifford descendant, that I know of, yet but have a number of them connected to various branches of my Shearmans, Winslows, Jennys & Wilkinsons. I was wondering if anyone knew about the following Giffords & Wilkinsons who were early members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in Rhode Island who later moved to Dutchess County, NY: Martha ________ married 1st William Wilkinson c. 1740 and 2nd William Gifford. They are buried at the Friends Burying Ground, Oswego, Dutchess Co., NY. Martha _______ had some children by William Wilkinson and when he died she married William Gifford after 1786 and had: i. Jabez Gifford ii. Wilkinson Gifford who had a son William iii. Benjamin Gifford who married Hannah __________ I think that I have the Gifford children correct. There might be more. This information came from a memorandum describing the location of graves in the Oswego burying ground. Any additional information on these people would be most welcome. - Ed Edward Coates Sinker Church Lea Bosbury, Herefordshire HR8 1PX UK
Hi All, Does anyone have a Willliam S. Gifford in their line? He shows in New York state in the 1800 and 1810 census records. Im also looking for anyone with any Phidelphia Gifford's. Michael
To the individual who is missing a Gifford: Did you check Iowa census? If not, I can do that for you. Too bad his name wasn't Alexander we could have declared him found. Said Gifford was hanged in Jackson Co. for murder. Two men in NY paid him because the victim saw the 2 commit a crime. (Iowa history book). We have an 1860 census index and Giffords will be listed alphabetically. I can give you names and you can pick and choose for me to look up in the census.
I am missing a Gifford male and hope that someone can enlighten me as to where my family may have misplaced him. Alfred Daniel Gifford was born July 27, 1861 in the state of Iowa to Margaret S. Wagoner (Gifford) and her husband, Mr. Gifford. On February 4, 1863, she gave birth to Frank Llewellyn Gifford in Grass Valley, California. It appears that Mr. Gifford was misplaced sometime after the first part of August, 1862. They MAY have lived in Jackson Co., Iowa, as Maggie's parents and siblings resided there for a time. I can't find Mr. Gifford being buried in the Nevada County, California area. According to 2 sources, Mr. Gifford was originally from Canada, possibly Nova Scotia. He was most likely born @1836. Does anyone have my Mr. Gifford in their files? This one has been a dead end for me for quite some time. Hello, fellow Listers, I hope the new year is finding all of you well and prosperous. I have been hearing a lot of controversy about the use of a "Roll Call" on the list. Personally I think it is a big help to those newest members of our list, who may not have seen previous calls. I am asking for your opinions on this now. Please e-mail me privately and let me know if you are interested in continuing this practice periodically - say every 6 months or so. Also, we would limit the time for the "Roll Call" to only two weeks and require that everyone participating, put "Roll Call" in the subject line, so that those of us who are not interested may delete them without having to open the file. Let me know what you think (YAY or NAY) and I will tally the vote and get back with you. Please send me your comments by Feb. 10th. Thanks! For those Giffords who have access to handwritten wills, certificates, photos etc. or who are interested in family traits, websites such as those at My Family.com are invaluable. I've found photos and information about my great great uncle Martin VanBuren Gifford at one of them, notably MyFamily.com - "OUR GIFFORD FAMILY" ancestors and descendants. & have been able to put some photos that I inherited from my grandmother Mary Ellen Gifford McMackin up on the site myself, in the hopes of finding out what their connection to my family may be. I encourage all of you to check out the pages at myfamily.com or to begin a page for your family. Happy hunting! Please help me to find the family of Eleanor GIFFORD, born 1787. She married @ Shelby Co, KY 1808 to Stephen SHIPMAN. They moved to Jackson Co, Indiana then West to Sullivan Co, Indiana and finally to Crawford Co, Illinois. There was a James GIFFORD who signed her marriage bond in KY, but I don't know if that was a Father, Uncle, Brother, etc.?
